  1. Doesn't even come close to interfering with air traffic, not unless you're using it right in front of a runway.
  2. It closed in 2010 for over a year, so I'd say it relinquished any claim to longest running bar at that point.
  3. Very possible they had a permit for the valet spots. Blocking the entire sidewalk?? Oh hell no. I don't tolerate that.
  4. Sheriff Garcia has a lot to explain about what went wrong in Harris County Jail. http://abc13.com/news/criminal-investigation-into-harris-co-jail-cell/329850/
  5. Don't forget http://oliverpennington.com/
  6. Casa De Caballo was excellent. They're going to reopen in Bellaire.
  7. ERA Pizza planned to do the same thing, so we'll see about that.
  8. The evidence was damning. They had cashed checks from the charity that aligned with his gambling trips. He was toast, and I'm surprised he didn't take the misdemeanor plea earlier.
  9. Not really. I still find plenty of people out there who do not know what Uber is. Look around the entire country and I think you'll find cheap Uber prices, at least not during Primetime surge hours.
  10. They absolutely do not have the market cornered. There's nothing proprietary about any of this. Any company can rip them off, and there's plenty of examples popping up. Uber and Lyft's services were not even legal until the regulation changes, so to say that the legalization of their services was a victory for taxis is ridiculous. Driving someone somewhere in a car gives you an immense amount of power over them. Public transportation services should be operated by trustworthy people. A fingerprint background check is not an unreasonable ask of someone who wants to provide transportation in our city.
  11. No I won't. Uber is already below the market taxi rate because they wanted to be competitive against Yellow Cab. City Council has legalized this new form of business, and if Uber prices too high another company is free to come in and compete with them. Uber doesn't have the market cornered on this. This isn't a monopoly type environment where one company completely owns the idea. Besides, if Lyft isn't willing to take reasonable measures to ensure that their drivers don't have background problems, then I don't want them operating as a transportation service in this city. Not at any price.
  12. Lyft is leaving because they don't want to submit their drivers to fingerprint background checks. I won't miss them.
  13. I would imagine that Marriott would offer to do a little minor work on the Battlestein's building for free, just to make the front look somewhat presentable.

  15. Yeah, I think it's pretty discreet from the outside. The inside is very festive, though, and I think they're trying to get a patio in back too.
  16. Yes, it's in a strip center next to a convenience store called Stop At Joe's.
  17. Who's winning? Who's losing? Here's the most recent numbers in monthly sales. Looks like Gaslamp is leading the bars. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17E333V4gGgeuvWufdqvZ1mDZ9R7RHknPaBbXExx_DL8/edit#gid=1065141001
  18. I view a walkable neighborhood as one where I can handle many basic life tasks reasonably with walking. For example, I live within walking distance of two grocery stores, plenty of restaurants and bars, several convenience stores, a locksmith, several coffeeshops, and etc etc. My Dad lived in one of those cul-de-sac mazes in Spring, and it was miles of walking just to get out of his neighborhood.
  19. Yeah, tunnels is the easiest. Lots of activity going on because of the branch in the basement.
  20. Ah yes, native peoples. I would imagine a Census would have been difficult of tribes that were, at the time, at war with the United States.
