  1. I wonder if they will include anything about the woman who died in the Bank of America basement while trying to get to her car.
  2. If I recall correctly, the entire site was leveled for the Hobby Center.
  3. I think Hugo's has won the award from the Houston Press. I like El Tiempo Cantina.
  4. That is impressive for CS. I have not been back to CS for many years. On my list to see: Bonfire Memorial, and the Jack E. Brown Chemical Engineering Building (my degree).
  5. La Strada suffers from the "word of mouth" syndrome. If there is even a hint of anti-gay feeling or attitude, the community will "avoid it like the plague". An establishment can do this when it sits in the gay epicenter of Houston. La Strada has long since died as a player on the Sunday Brunch scene. I am getting to the point where even I can not stand Berryhill on Sundays. I tend to go for places with the predominantly gay crowd. Gay nightlife/social environment in Houston is in transition right now. This happens every few years as we gays get bored.
  6. Hamburger Mary's is not about the food. It is about the atmosphere. I have been to several franchises across the country and the food has never impressed me. It is a fun place to go. Just like the movie Office Space says, "You can get a burger anywhere, people come to Chachi's for the atmosphere". That is why Hamburger Mary's will thrive. Also if it can compete in the highly competitive Sunday Brunch category it will also do well. I feel that Berryhill Montrose's days are numbered, the straights have found it out (no offense to those of you are are). I see the emergence of a new happy Sunday Brunch place. Hamburger Mary's might be that place. We will see.
  7. My Dallas friends seem to still go all the time. A franchise in Houston will do well at the Noche location. Ideal spot and tons of parking.
  8. This appears to be a proposal for a revitalized Fourth Ward utilizing a new urbanism concept. However, I don't think it was adopted as the Fourth Ward TIRZ has different master plan on its website. Fourth Ward On there you will find a PDF of the master plan for the area. It appears that CNU was not involved. The design firm, Stull and Lee seems to have won the bid.
  9. As an Aggie, I will add my two cents. I have only been to Lubbock once and that was connection on a Southwest airlines flight in Lubbock "International"? I have never flown into an airport where i could not see the town we were landing in. I swear it looked like a dirt field. As far as the university goes, I am sure it is fine. I don't know if I would rank it in the top tier schools in our state. No offense, perhaps I bitter to losing to the Red Raiders too many times in the last few years.
  10. I hate to think of the spread of HIV as natural selection. Unfortunately those that are HIV positive may believe that they can engage in unprotected sex as there is no futher harm to be done. This may be were the natural selection would occur. By mixing different strains of HIV, a drug resistant strain will emerge, more potent than before. I am afraid we will soon see the effects of the experimentation. Ssullivan: Which organization are you a board member? I am active in an organization raising money for HIV/AIDS.
  11. Unfortunately, these places are HIV and STD breeding grounds. Our community is facing a new crisis unlike any we have seen before with a rising apathy towards catching AIDS. Coupled with an ever increasing use of crystal meth along with unprotected sex, I fear that our generation is creating a super HIV virus, resistant to current treatment methods. It is quite scary and I hope our community will wake up soon.
  12. I have not heard this rumor but I welcome this "gay" franchise. These places are popular all over the country including SF, San Diego and Dallas to name a few. I welcome them to our city and I believe it will add synergy to what is becoming a happening little area by South Beach and Hollywood Bookstore. It should do quite well.
  13. Ray Hill is a quite a character. I love talking to him about the old days. He is a valuable asset to our community. I aspire to be as good of a community leader as he is. The younger "Queer as Folk" generation does not appreciate or realize the struggle to get us to this point. Ray helps remind us of that.
  14. The Iris Theater stills exists.... it has been turned into the Boaka Bar and Mercury Room. You can still see the Egyptian decor.
  15. As a representative of my people I will comment here. There are major and minor districts. The major ones in my opinion are of course: Montrose and the Heights The secondary areas are: Westbury, Garden Oaks, Timbergrove, Inwood Forest It is true that our community is spreading out of the so-called "gay-ghetto". Some call this progress. I ,however, like coming home to a portion of the city that is ours. Montrose offers that feeling.
  16. I hate the "Dallatude". It is ridiculous. It is the land of living beyond your means. As far as restaurants, I think Houston wins. Oh yeah, and the downtown streets have no rhyme or reason. And the freeways change numbers if drive on them long enough. Ok, so I am one of the hostile posters that hates Dallas. I was in Dallas last weekend and was reminded of why I love Houston so much.
  17. Yes, that's better than Yahoo and Mappoint. It will rock.
  18. And the buyer is...... Hotel ZaZa out of Dallas. You heard it here first. My source is a manager of a competiting hotel and his friend will be the new catering manager.
  19. I hate to cite Dallas as a city that did something right, as I hate Dallas. However, I do like their Mockingbird Station and think something like it would do well at Northline. True, Northline is no University or Highland Park, but over time it could improve. Unfortunately this rail stop will be overlooked both in its potential and in any investment around it. The money will go North of here I believe probably to Greenspoint.
  20. To me, it looks Spanish style like Mi Luna in the Village or interior Mexican style like Hugo's. One would think this would be some fabulous bar or nightclub since it is at the gay epicenter of Houston. However this location has always struggled.
  21. Time will tell if this "haunted" location will produce a long standing tenant. Parking is always an issue. A key to sucess might be making the diner 24 hours. This will give Katz' a run for its money. Does anyone know of any plans for the diner?
  22. I personally can not wait for this project to be complete. I am liking the greenery that is growing up along the sides of Montrose part of 59. I can't wait to see the bridges complete. However, with what I believe is a year left to go, the traffic is quite bad coming into downtown.
  23. Well as the token gay on the board, it sounds like fun. In flight seat changes would rock. Oh and there is a gay cruise line.
  24. I think it would be good...although I am an inner loop snob.... all my choices would be within the warm confines of 610.
