  1. I also saw several construction workers on the property. One was measure the perimeter of the property.
  2. That was not the illustration my analogy was intending to make, but that is of little consequence. I generally agree with your second point. That is, the whole
  3. I either partially disagree or misunderstood. Having a soccer team play competitively in the "World's Sport," will give Houston much more international exposure than one or two players. Sure, Yao gives us exposure in China--but because he is from China. Dynamo, however, could be known more globally. That is, not because a player is from X, but because the Dynamo are a soccer team. A loose analogy could be: the only reason I know Green Bay, WI even exists is because they have the Packers. I do not, however, know of any random UK towns because an American may play for them.
  4. As I understand it, selling a set number of units in the first tower was a prerequisite to securing the financing for the second tower.
  5. This may be slightly off topic, but I remember when the lots around the Galleria were mostly open pavement. In fact, I remember the lot north of the Galleria was some guy selling bean-bags out of a van. This was only about ten or fifteen years ago. Now its fifty-story buildings full of million-dollar condos. Wow, uptown has really changed.
  6. Huh, learn something new every day. I had to wikipedia half of what you were talking about. Also, I just watched Citizen Kane for the first time last weekend. Rosebud!
  7. Awe, that reminded me of Chicago--then I laughed.
  8. Wasn't that the art auction at the Lawndale? I went, but cannot remember the name other than "muertos." It was a good time, and a lot of great pieces were for sale.
  9. As I understand it, the rule against ex post facto laws refers only to the constitutionality of criminal laws. Here, we are probably dealing with either a "taking" or breach of contract.
  10. Nothing new, but in case you missed it: Oct. 26, 2007, 2:11AM Dynamo stadium deal slowly takes shape Team, city favor downtown location for site, but loose ends still remain By BERNARDO FALLAS Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Nearly two years after the Anschutz Entertainment Group relocated its franchise from San Jose, Calif., and renamed it the Dynamo, players are still waiting for the investor-operator to make good on a promise to secure a stadium deal in Houston. "I don't want to say we're getting antsy, but maybe that's the right word; we'd like to see where we are," said keeper Pat Onstad, whose team takes on Dallas in the first leg of a home-and-home, Western Conference semifinal series Saturday at Pizza Hut Park. "What we would like to see, now getting a feel for the community, is a stadium downtown," Onstad said. "It's in the best interest of the league and the best interest of the sport." After months of snail-pace negotiations, it appears a deal is closer than ever to becoming a reality. But not before some more bureaucratic grinding. Partnership near Through the Dynamo, AEG is in the advanced stages of negotiating a public-private partnership with the city of Houston that would facilitate the construction of a 22,000-capacity, open-air facility just east of downtown and priced between $70 million to $80 million. The agreement also would include the construction of a satellite public soccer complex and training facility likely to be located on the city's south side. bernardo.fallas@chron.com
  11. Awe, the Sport Sample Shop was in that building? I wonder where/if they moved. You could get things like athletic shorts for half-price. Oh well, bring on the Sonoma!
  12. What a great idea to use some of the old finishes and fountains from Allen House. I am really impressed with the developers' vision. I thought the plans what were posted at the beginning of this thread were a pipe-dream, but I believe now!
  13. I call that little stretch of Montrose by the Interfaith Ministries, Skid Row.
  14. Wow, I didn't realize the developers had already invested so much money. They paid $500,000 for utility up-grades? This is going to get real ugly.
  15. Is this the same lot that we all thought was going to be mixed-use and then it was going to be a Safeco or something? So now it's going to be this beauty? Horray!
  16. I remember the one under the Buffalo Bayou bridge--right there by The Aquarium? That guy was definately setting up camp.
  17. I'm pretty sure City Counsel lacks authority to grant a variance from a deed restriction. Deed restrictions are enforceable as between property owners, etc. I guess my question was more general than just the proposed 1717. Given the fact that we do not have "zoning,
  18. I really cannot wait for these blights to be leveled. I agree with some of the nostalgia, but when the buildings have been vacant for twenty years and/or are a haven for criminals, I have to give way to development. This building will do wonders for the area. Good bye shady buildings and bum tinkle smell!
  19. I second that request. I have always wanted to see an implosion! > Where would one even look to find that out? I remember when they brought down Page Parks. For obvious reasons, it was early on a Sunday or Saturday. I missed it, but someone on Haif posted a jpeg.
  20. Testing the soil would be my guess. I'm not an architect or engineer, but surely the contents of the soil must be determined before more definite plans can be drawn. Do we have any engineers in the house?
