  1. I went the night before and watched the rehearsal in front of the stage with no lasers or fireworks and went back the next night and watched the real show from a distance. All the feeways near downtown were at a standstill, people would get out of there cars a watch the action from the freeway. Yea it was something to see. Probably seen by a million people.

There has never been a Houston Festival that topped that one and likely never will again. I remember parking somewhere in Montrose and pulling our then 2 year old daughter for blocks and blocks in her little red wagon to Allen Parkway. We never got close to the stage but we had a great view of downtown Houston. It was being simulcast over some radio station and there were plenty of "boom boxes" around so we didn't need to get any closer to hear the music.

  2. Thought I'd give an update. I found a set of speakers on Amazon that were a couple hundred dollars cheaper than locally, so I decided to buy the in spite of the taxes. To my surprise, the final tab did NOT include sales tax. The purchase was from a retailer in Indiana, though it was ordered through Amazon. I don't know all of the ins and outs of what is taxed and what is not, but this purchase was not taxed.

That's happened a couple of times to me also. Seems the only way they tax an item is if it comes through their own warehouse, not through a third party. Many third parties also offer free shipping. This might be Amazon's way of keeping away from taxes which is fine with me.

  3. I agree that prices at Whole Foods tend to be higher, but in certain cases, the old adage "you get what you pay for" is true. For example, in my opinion (so save all your comments about how my "opinion" is stupid, misguided, wrong, etc), the quality of their baked goods is considerably higher than products available at other markets and is worth the price. There are other products that I feel the same way about.

That's the beauty of choice, right? I can go to multiple markets. I'll probably continue to spend 75% of my grocery dollars at HEB and may spend 25% at Whole Foods to buy the items that I feel they do a better job with.

That's pretty much my ratio also. HEB is my primary shopping store but I agree you can tell a difference. Steaks and even chicken and fish from Whole Foods, as expensive as they are, taste so much better then other stores. Of course if your into quantity over quality, which most Americans obviously are, then WF is not going to appeal to you.

  4. I was walking around midtown Frday, not exactly the area where this occured, closer to the Greyhound station. I was amazed at the blatant drug dealing at 9:00am with cops less than a block away. Serisouly the cops were on the same street while a guy was selling drugs to some women in a car.

Bet if you were to hold up a sign warning the drug dealers of the police nearby than you would get arrested.

  5. I am still trying to figure out why the City thinks there's a real governmental interest in replacement windows and siding. I can understand plumbing and electrical, there are life safety issues there, but windows? Siding? Why would the City care one whit about those?

It's all about revenue. The building department and fire department have imposed a whole bunch of new permits over the last 10 years or so. Unlike the police, they have no other way of generating revenue and were told a long time ago to either bring more money in or cut back on staffing.

  6. As much as I would like to see him in a Rocket uniform I just don't believe Howard will come to here. Instead I would like to see them move up a few notches before tonight's draft and roll the dice for a top 10 pick.
