Brought tears to my eyes.
Seriously, I will be happy when they finish the over-passes in segment D. Still takes a long time to get from 59 to 10. I can't wait to drive down segment E just to see what the heck is out there.

I heard the Galleria will be replaced by a Super Walmart.

For those that missed the first go around: Astrodome seats are back on sale this morning. This time you just purchase a ticket ($200 per pair) and then go pick up the seats on Dec. 17. Much less hassle.

For watching football games the stadium is adequate the way it is. It's the rest of it that needs renovating. High school stadiums have nicer dressing rooms then Rice. That's why I liked the last plan. They were going to preserve the main stadium and just tear down and rebuild the old outdated facilities on the south end zone. It was a good plan but apparently cost more then the school wants to spend. I'm afraid any new plans will just be a cover up, much like the slight renovations 10 years ago.

Ate there about a month ago (Houston location). Decent burger. Place reminded me a lot of Austin's Hopdaddy. Awesome bourbon/caramel shake.
Not an easy place to find.

Tried the one in Sugar Land. If you like Outback or Saltgrass you will probably like Longhorn.

I joined because of the Historic Houston thread. I was a member for at least 2 years before I even ventured into other HAIF threads. Still enjoy hearing about old H-town people and places the most.

Scenario 3. I keep my car and go and come as I please. The first two will not happen in our lifetime.

1.) HEB Montrose for produce and everyday staples
2.) Central Market for treats and meats
3.) Whole Foods Dallas St. for prepared foods, treats and meats too
4.)Trader Joe's S. Shepard for pantry goods and frozen stuff
5.) Phoenicia downtown for specialty ethnic foods and baked goods
6.) Specs Midtown for deli/condiments/treats and beer
7.) Fresh Market Westheimer for baked goods
7.) 99 Cent Ranch I-10 for fresh seafood and asian foods
8.) Amazon.com for pantry goods
9.) Randalls Midtown for convenience store goods like treats beer and emergency needs
Good list. I would add Fiesta for those south of the border "treats" you can't find anywhere else.
I have been buying my seafood and good cuts of meat from WF. Costs more but there really is a difference. And they have a good craft beer selection.

Want more? Read Vicki's book "Boy's From Houston".

Did they repair elevators?

Great article. So much history. Sadly most of those that voted for it's demise probably never witnessed or where even aware of any of.

Houston uglier then Dallas? No way.

I'm surprised it wasn't "breaking news".

The Willow Bend near Stella Link photos brought back memories. Last pic was I believe where the old S. Main drive-in was located. Also I can remember when that now vacant strip center was bustling.

I just recently visited the New England area for the first time. Traffic circles EVERYWHERE. (Or roundabouts, whatever you want to call them). Seemed to be working up there but not sure about down here.

After flying Jet Blue for the first time very recently, I will never fly United again (except maybe overseas). Added bonus of flying out of Hobby instead of the wretched IAH.

Having lived in SL for over 25 years it's amazing to witness the growth out here. It was a sleepy little community when I first moved here. I can accept the growth but the 59 traffic gets worse every year. Something had to be done to help commuters. Improving the hwy 90 commute would really help. They need to get rid of the bottleneck at 610 in the mornings.

It always amazes me that stereotypes that are seen as societal positives are forgiven, but stereotypes that are not as favourable are frowned upon.
I'd say, if a person has grown up being told that they need a handout to survive, they are going to believe that. Regardless of their racial origin, or skin color.
I agree. There are generations of people that have relied on handouts. Would eliminating those handouts cause crime to increase or would it inspire people to succeed in life?

I'm about half way through the book. She kind of jumps around a bit and because she grew up in the southeast part of Houston by Pasadena there is a lot of focus on bands and clubs from that area.early on. Some I've never heard of but it's still a very interesting if you grew up in the Houston area, particularly during the 60's. Later she talks about the influence the Catacombs and Love Street had on bands. She had a great interview with one of my favorite Houston bands, Fever Tree. It's a good read for old Houston hippies. She even credits me with one of the photos used in the book.

I feel your pain. My daughter and her boyfriend just moved back to Houston from Austin and found Houston real estate to be as bad as Austin. (Hard to find and way over priced). They ended up renting a duplex in Montrose sight-unseen. Two years ago they could not rent the place for half of what they are getting now but demand is so high property owners are taking advantage of it and gouging renters.

Across from the airport? Yes. Developer wants to sell homes before beginning commercial development. He'd better hurry though because a lot of commercial development is starting in Telfair just on the other side of 90.
