Memories for the area just out side the loop in zip coeds 77096 77035 & about 1/3 of 77025
I remember before the walmart south Poast Oak & 610 was built in the late 80s to early 90s there use to be a golf course there.
I believe it was just a driving range and it didn't last very long.
Where the Krogers South Post Oak & West Bellfort is now there use to Beldens which is now at Chimeny Rock & North Brasewood. Behind the Beldens use to be a drug store do not remember the name they sold hamburgers.
I remember the drugstore but also can't remember the name. Don't remember eating there but did eat at Kings Hamburgers next door a lot.
Where the Cabana Carwash is now there use to a putt putt miniature golf
Gooney Golf.
Next to Beldens just south there to use to a AJ Foyt car dealer there
Yes. it was a big dealership.
Right after AJ Foyt closed behind where the Meyerland car repair is there to use to be a place that sold 4 wheelers & dirt bikes it burnt down
At one time it was a Yamaha service center. I had a Yamaha 650 that I would by parts for there.
Right next to the Meyerland car repair is now a Day care to use to be a restaurant do not remember then name they use to serve home style food the drinks were served in mason jars
Can't remember the place off hand.
South Post Oak & West Bellfort right next to the chase bank use to be a cafeteria do not remember the name
Wyatts
Stella Link & 610 where the discount tire is now there use to be a Jack N The Box
Before Jack N Box there was a Bonanza Steak House. Got my first job there busting tables when I was about 16.
South Main & Willowbend there use to a golf course wierd thing about it it was so close to the street bet a few times people driving by got golf balls through there window
Used to play there with my Dad growing up. Started out as a 9 hole course then I believe became a par 3 18 hole course. When it was built it was on the outside edge of Houston.

I'm sure your referring to the end of Greenwillow as it enters the field. I don't remember there being any other streets and this aeriel view from 1973 does not show any. Perhaps they were proposed but never materialized.

I have mixed emotions about this move. On one hand having a real rivalry against the Rangers will be fun but on the other hand it's the dismal American League with their stupid designated hitter rule.

Today I heard a reporter refer to "fag" as "The F-word." I'm not saying that use of "fag" is appropriate in the context he was reporting on, but we already have an F-word, and it's not such a horrible word that it rises to the level of "he whose name must not be spoken."
That just "S-word".

Makes you miss the good old days before political correctness.

Rice was here in 1980?

I agree. Four or five stories is what I would call a midrise.
And just because there are similar atrocities all over Houston, that doesn't make this one right. Still, as I said before, this is Houston and what can you do?
-
People need to use google earth and LOOK at this location.
Comparing Bissonnet @ Ashby with say 2121 Kirby (The address of The Huntigdon, Houston's tallest and most expensive high rise) is silly.
First off, The Huntingdon only has 115 units so you are dealing with FAR fewer people. Secondly, Kirby has SIX lanes of traffic at this location. It is just South of San Felipe, a four-laned major street. It's neighbors are River Oaks Elementary across the street and a 15 story office tower next door.
All joking aside I agree it is a stupid place for a high rise, but that's Houston for you.

So now it's apartments. I was hoping for a low income housing project but I guess this is the next best thing.

I just re-read post #1, it was the pool at the Gateway location, the person mentions the Crystal & a dome at the bottom.
I want to say the complex (including the pool, the skating rink, and the grounds) was called Gateway and they just called the pool itself the Crystal Pool.

Amazing. I never knew this existed.
-
The Shamrock opened in 1949 Gateway opened in 1958. There would have been no problem with putting a boat in Gateway and watersking in it. At some point they may have.
They actually did that at the Shamrock.

Tried it once. Nothing great. The close by Xuco Xucana is way better so I won't miss them.

A friend sent me this link. It's the Westbury High School class of 62-65 web page. When you go to the "Tana's Reminisce" page you will find a ton of great historic Houston pictures and trivia, not just Westbury. Worth taking a look at.
Warning: turn down your speakers before you click the link. It's one of those pages that automatically starts blasting music.

and pissin everywhere but the restrooms there. The hippies are what killed Westbury Square. I knew some shop owners there that moved out because they were tired of the hippies running off their customers. The entire concept of the center was shop owners could have apartments over their stores. Plus in the late 70s the center was purchased by a landlord that refused to keep the upkeep on the place.
I don't know where you get your information from but I strongly disagree. Those "hippies" is what kept it alive for so long. Not just hippies but young people in general. What killed it, as you did point out was the terrible landowners and management. They kept raising the rent but did nothing to improve the place and did minimal maintenance. I knew some shop owners that just got fed up with the management and left. (They actually loved the "hippies").

The Shamrock pool was definitely deeper. I even took SCUBA lessons there as a kid. And those diving towers were huge. At least they seemed that way.

Wasn't this site being considered for the soccer statium at one point?
I do believe it's the same site.

You should do well at that location. Lot's of families in the nearby neighborhood that should love your concept.. You should benefit from the nearby stadium crowd on weekends.

The remodel is coming along nicely. The mezzanine is above the deli/food prep area. I don't think it's open yet, though.
Oh, the "Please proceed to register (#)" lady has been turned back on. It wouldn't be so bad if they would change the voice/gender occasionally.
Gender is irrelevant at Disco Kroger.

Awesome video.
Now let's see who can identify the performers at the Tidelands.
Kingston Trio?

I also drove by it this morning. Saw the bulldozer working so I'm sure your right.

As far as inside the loop, I've been to Piola's a couple of times and it's pretty darn good. The Quattro Formaggi pie is awesome. (Gorgonzola cheese, brie cheese and grana padano cheese)

Nice. Brings back a lot of memories.

While we are on the subject I have a friend writing a book about those good old days and is selling posters of Love Street to help pay for it.
Memories Of Meyerland/Willowbend/Westbury
in Historic Houston

I think you may be right. I remember eating at PoFolks a lot, just can't remember for sure if it was at this location or not. Seems like they had one in Sharpstown also. They had really good chicken fried steak as I remember.
