  1. What is somewhat saddening is these old schools may have existed at one time and were later demolished. The fact that they were name in honor of someone that must have been a contributor to society is forever forgotten or maybe not. As is the case with these you mention. I personally have never heard of these folks. They must have done something good to deserve to have schools named after them?
  2. One of my cousins said he was asleep facing up when in the middle of the night a giant cockroach used his bare chest as a landing pad! He freaked out and smashed it with his hand. (Getting graphic) Needless to say he almost had a heart attack! Jumped up turned on the light switch and it was staggering in circles until he smashed again with a tennis shoe. It took a while until it finally kicked the bucket. Simply wouldn't die. Like a 50's B flick. Here is some roach horror for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouGM_GvfOgU
  3. In all honesty, I wish they would go ahead and finish what they started 38 or so years ago, build a frwy straight into the East End. Majority of the old businesses and old homes around that area are not worth saving. They are not of any historical significance unless people consider beer dives mounments. This new Spur could enter right into Lawndale and split like they did over around U of H. I will strike up the band to commence the grand opening of this imaginary new Frwy. PS, be sure to read the first post on this topic. Like a scene from "High Plains Drifter".lol Tumbleweed rolling around, etc.
  4. Still think an actual school being built right next to RR tracks is a big mistake. Must be way behind schedule and cement for drive way is barely being poured as we type. They really need to put the sign out front to indicate this school is for everyone, not just one segment of the community. Big no-no. I know the drill, new topic. Kung Phooey....
  5. So has this show been cancelled already? Someoneth pleaseth explaneth....
  6. Second that motion! He was only somewhat as a singer OK with Genesis but (a pathetic leprechan when he went solo) All he did was make major wuss soundtracks after Genesis split up. What a sap. Found Rock N Roll High School on DVD the other day and it blew me away! "Teenage Lobotomy" still kills me! Another fantastic cult film. This reminds me of the days (like to forget) of blue and ugh blond hair attempts. What the hell was I thinking
  7. Their home was really MOD 60's too! We kids used to immitate the dogs voice, (hysterical when I think about it).
  8. Are you sure you weren't laying half frozen on a floating piece of debris shouting...Come back...come back... Oh, oh, I think I summoned Celine Dion again!
  9. I think I can remember that one topic or similar. I found a huge one in my dress shoe while in 2nd grade class. Discreetly removed my shoe and let it crookedly zig zag across the floor and yelled "Oh my god its a roach" all the girls screamed and it was complete mayhem. I went along and pretended it came from nowhere. Advice: Always look inside your shoes when in a hurry dressing for grade school. Ugh, still get nautious.
  10. Please encourage your pals, relatives etc to join The Haif. Its the rare stories like this one, I personally love to hear! Can't get enough.
  11. When I found that on VHS I grabbed it! Classic Cult Film too! Cant believe I saw Suicidal Tendencies at a show and lived to tell about it. Still have that very album cover was taken on Venice Beach, CA. Puma-busters, no need to be embarrased of the first choice it had great songs too. Although considered pop and somewhat mainstream they were still all the rage. Numbers would play too and that was a rarity for Bruce (DJ). The main actor of the film is the only one that should change the subject when it comes up in interviews. Sid n Nancy soundtrack was another winner at that time.
  12. Agreed, sadly there never seems to be enough participation from those areas on Haif? Even the few Pasadenan's that once posted seem to have vanished? It's like everyone just headed for the hills! Ja!
  13. I cracked up when I was watching an old Doris Day comedy film we once saw as kids in the mid 60's. George plays a hamburger joint cook that enjoys chatting with Doris and Brian Keith as they lounge around at the Drive In restaurant he works at. He is hardly recognizable with no facial hair and way younger of course. His Brooklyn dialect is what made his bit part so great. "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" or was it "With 6 You Get Egg Roll? He was quite the funny guy, will be missed.
  14. Just an FYI Nena, there is a section on Haif for "Other neigborhoods around Houston". Like for topics on Pasadena, South Houston which are totally different worlds from East End. Just dont want to confuse those not familiar with our city. Thanks!
  15. That's a great photo of the candy striped awning! I imagine myself dipping my onion rings in that delicious tartar sauce now! It's delightful, it's delicious, it's delictible.
  16. What we really need is more recreational facilities for the children & senior group. I say the addition of : 1. A set of Olympic sized Swimming Pool's with top professional instructors like they do for the people out in The Woodlands. 2. A huge multi sectioned Ice Skating Rink. All children need to learn to ice skate, could become tomorrow's champions! 3. Can for get the elderly! A huge 5 star hotel type of retirement facility like the ones we see in the Galleria area. This area deserves all of these amenities.
  17. Its funny you created a topic just for the song?lol When we were kids we used to crank up the radio and dance "the jerk" on top of the couches to it. I still have to tap my foot to it. It epitomizes that genre of 60's mod music as far as I'm concerned. The Hollies continued to make more hits after that one. "All I need is the Air that I breath" for example.
  18. Never knew there was an actual website! http://www.princeshamburgers.com/ Also never knew the craze all started in Dallas! (read history section) and see how neat it was illuminated at night...oh memories....
  19. ROYM you deserve an award for best scanned photo of the YEAR! Here is an excerpt that indicates just how much Prince's had pride in their beautiful carhops. There is a famous photo of the event and I will dig around for it, but see the news article for now: The attention car hops received outside of Hollywood could he a bit more genuine. Capitalizing on the publicity generated by Life magazine's car hop article, the city of Galveston, Texas, initiated a car hop contest in conjunction with its Splash Days festival opening their resort season. A statewide gathering of car hops paraded on the sea wall and performed a series of restaurant maneuvers while judges sat in an open convertible. Contestants were judged on their charm, figure, courtesy, technique, and quickness of repartee. Balancing a tray filled with bottles of Coke, Seven-Up, Dr. Pepper, and beer, car hops were cheered on by thousands of onlookers celebrating "this newest and most popular of modern institutions." Here are some of the gal's.
  20. Any given book store will have a whole section on the subject. Now if you want extemely rare postcards/pics rummage at local salvage or old beat up antique mom/pop places. Not the fancy lower Westheimer shops either the off the beaten path places. Same goes for old turn of the century Galvez. Don't forget to meet and learn stories from the older generations, they are living history my friend.
  21. Yes, I remember that photo. Could double as a still from a disaster film. We went to a small casual Christmas party by a friends company on or around the 5th or 6th floor around 1982-83? Seems like a zillion years ago. It seemed like a dinosaur even then. This was when DT was not a very pleasant place to be since everthing new & exciting was on the Westside. If you said downtown people thought you lost your marbles.
  22. Yep! The stubs of the Prince's sign are presently there now and are about 5 inches off the ground plus several of the concrete little menu islands. (This is funny, like trying to find a lost Pyramid or excavation of somekind). I will describe the view looking straight into the front door. The cooking area was smack in the middle and the lady who took your order "inside" would walk up to that swinging 1/2 door write your order from the menu above your head. The eating area was to the right as you entered. The juke box was on the right wall next to the restrooms. When you sat inside you could see all of the cars and Gulf Frwy feeder to the south. Let's see...there were always pigeons munching on left over onion rings on the ground. PS, if you drove in from Cullen you could park facing East right next to the tall Princes sign which by the way you would always see as you passed above on the Gulf Frwy. The same lady that worked the window presently works at Mandola's Deli down the street near Kroger. My mom knew her and she lived on the corner of Ernestine and Leeland across from the present Cage Elementary. She was really cool had a red/orange beehive hairdo compete with those 60's cat eye glass frames. Even sounded and chewed gum like Flo on "Alice". Ja! I also loved that one of a kind tartar sauce they were famous for! Yum, yum!
  23. I had it made when I worked in downtown. Park n Ride was de riguer for me as far as getting to work everyday. Now that I have to commute to far Westchase I am forced to drive. I hate it. NPR has been doing a segment on this very topic all week long and its very interesting to hear others sacrifices, etc. Car manufacturer's are in a frenzy to create a smaller possibly one or two car-seater only auto. many people are actually turning down great paying jobs just to be closer to home or simply work out of home. I am ready for that like now!
  24. The Harrisburg Prince's (vaguely recall seeing) was right next to the RR tracks and I think it became an Icehouse later or was next door to an Icehouse? That spot today has become a nice new shopping center. The one that was in downtown is still there but is a cajun restaurant now? The Prince's sign is still on top and is kind of 1950's googie style but has been painted over with the new cajun place name. I think it is right behind the new Sacred Heart Co cathedral? Only went to that Princes on rare ocassions. We practically lived at the Cullen/Gulf Frwy local. Here...I will treat everyone to a good old fashioned Prince's Shrimp Basket!
  25. It's a miracle it is still there. The Savoy may have got its name from the popular 1940's Benny Goodman tune? Well, just for old times sake here it is Stompin' At The Savoy Benny goodman Lyrics by: Andy Razaf (b. Andreamentena Razafinkeriefo) Music by: Benny Goodman (Benjamin David G.) Savoy, the home of sweet romance, Savoy, it wins you with a glance, Savoy, gives happy feet a chance to dance. Your old form just like a clinging vine, Your lips so warm and sweet as wine, Your cheek so soft and close to mine, divine. How my heart is singing, While the band is swinging, I'm never tired of romping, And stomping with you at the Savoy. What joy - a perfect holiday, Savoy, where we can glide and sway, Savoy, let me stomp away with you; The home of sweet romance, It wins you at a glance, Gives happy feet a chance to dance. Just like a clinging vine, So soft and sweet as wine, So soft and close to mine, divine. How my heart is singing, While the band is swinging, I'm never, never, never tired of romping, And stomping with you at the Savoy. What joy - a perfect holiday, Savoy, where we can glide and sway, Savoy, let me stomp away with you;
