  1. All of this was a tragic event, there were no winners. Both parties were wrong. Yes, all of us are sick of these type of thugs and they did get what they deserved, however cops are paid to do a job not us do their jobs. This was just another old school redneck dude from old KKK Pasadena era. Many of these old timers lived in the older part and just moved further away to get away from minorities. (Good luck) Aside from all that he should have minded his own business (simply call 911) and stop trying to be a vigilante. Again, there were no winners here. PS, (If this were another major city there would be buildings on fire and cars being overturned)
  2. It is still there in the back behind former Penney's. Had been converted into several dance clubs over the last decades. It is talked about quite a bit in Movie Theaters of the past section on Haif. Coincidence you mentioned, while hearing "Staying Alive" on the radio this morn it always reminds me of a goofy double date (high school) where we were forced to see Saturday Night Fever at that very theater. Saw some of the best movies of the mid 70's there. It was very safe and family-oriented then.
  3. Attended a cousin's wedding there several years ago. I really like that church, very traditional just the way I like it. I hope more and more parishioner's join. I imagine the links tell of upcoming Bazaar's, etc.
  4. Witness Protection Program? He will need it. I would not even want to be standing near that man. His guilt will destroy him. No mercy here.
  5. I imagine someone like the East End Chamber of Commerce were the party responsible for erecting that sign? Maybe older members from the Eastwood Civic group may know? Not sure if this encompasses thier interests or proximity of? The sign is so un-noticeable that only a walking pedestrian will notice. Just an FYI ,that corner photographer place was once a very busy Childcare Nursery. When walking to Jack in the Box down Dumble we always would see children running, shouting, crying and playing with toys and parents picking them up. So eerily quite now.
  6. Those were good. Got a little of everything. Not just the ugly but the good too. FYI, We knew people that lived in some of the homes pictured. Is that really your home or a noted comment from another person? Know some info if interested in that specific brick home. Can PM me if care to know. That Magic Palace place at Dumble/Telephone was a family owned Auto Parts for ages. That Gonzales store area...Oy vey....
  7. Instant celebrity! Take a drive directly in front of the old Maxwell House plant. Here you will notice that someone has plenty of work to do. What is kind of unfair and sad is that the long, long time residents that once cared religiously for their properties have become elderly and too ill to care for their homes, the renters are what ruined the image of their once lovable nabe. I say unfair, because media and newcomers percieve as slum when its a number of factors that made it they way it is. Same old story, younger generations fled to suburbs and left the senior community to fend for themselves. Such an injustice to these older genrations. 99% of them will not use this new rail. Most seniors fear this thing and the element within. Ok, here come the rocks! Gotta duck!
  8. Took a slow drive from Lockwood and headed East. Was more focused to the left side and noticed that most of the structures are not worth any value. There is maybe 1-2 bldgs or former homes that can be moved but by far it's blighted and may as well vanish. Kind of like having to shoot a horse after it breaks a leg. Put it out of it's misery. However as noted the recently remodeled structures like that new bank across or near Lenox will be a battle. Get out the popcorn.
  9. Cattle, lol You can take a tour of the model (If still there). Pretty impressive to bad its just a temp demo. The cattle can stay out on the balcony.
  10. Is this the one almost directly in front of Austin High School? Seems like just 9-10 years ago it was placed there. If replaced, should be elevated and lit at night. We never considered that area Broadmoor truthfully. Broadmoor was is always has been nabe around Broadmoor ave from Triangle Park to 45 frwy. PS, some/many of those old china berry trees are crumbling and must be removed. Why dont people call 311 or email 311 is beyond me. The worse are at Munger/Broadmoor huge dead branches dangle precariously above. Slow down next time and peek above your windshield. When Rita was nearing that last time many of these huge branches dropped or just split and remain haf broken off. If these were all removed the lighting would illuminate the whole corner. Ive drifted but owners need to wake up, renters do not care. Same story.
  11. This whole corridor has made an amazing comeback. I honestly think that city planners had big ideas for Almeda Rd. It must have been swinging when this place was built. I was hoping someone could also disclose any inside info about the owners or founders of this place? Like they mention Felix Tijerina of the Felix Mexican Reastuarants fame. Wonder what was the name of these people and what was the idea that kicked it off. Must be some nostalgia stories in here. Whenever passing down Almeda this place could double from a distance as the typical sidewalk cafe or bistro along the Sunset Strip in LA, maybe thats why I like the "curb appeal" so much.
  12. Great research! More historical Houston mysteries loved! Just knew it had that roaring 20's mystique about it. I can just picture young flapper-era ladies lounging around on that top patio/terrace. This was more than likely one of the only other alternatives to stay cool in our extreme hot summers in those days. No air conditioning then, so these open air lounging areas were the place to be. Thank you for answering our questions.
  13. It's a miracle this place is still there today! Just wondered if anyone has memories or still visits this long time Houston eatery? I once had a coworker that mentionend that his family had been having big gathering at this place for years. Just wonder how authentic it is and especially if anyone had photos from the early days? Must have been opened in late 1950's? Stories and photos anyone??? http://www.spanishvillagerestaurant.com/photo2.jpg http://www.spanishvillagerestaurant.com/about.html
  14. Ban has been lifted, now everyone can jump into the clear, aqua blue waters of our wondrous Gulf! (Just like in those Corona commercials)...and please no thongs unless your a 20-ish runway super-model.
  15. WOW! You are good! That is the very bldg I speak of. That black iron doored bldg on the left of the Art Deco bldg will probably go to. Save those doors someone! I worked at S Stevenson for 2 yrs around 82-83 and that whole area I worked in has vanished already. That old Purple Heart? across the street may be leveled too. I am assuming built in 1940's? Oh and that historic gas station on corner of Lockwood and Harrisburg? Yeoeeee! Ok, we are straying from topic but see "Reminicing about old East End Structures topic".
  16. Well everyone from the old East End, I am afraid there will be more notable structures about to bite dust in a clean sweep in the next few months/year. Tune in to the Metro / Brown Line topic and see the latest. We realize change is inevitable and that some not all can be saved but all we can do is sit and watch now. Now, where's my life vest? 1st Class Passengers first... right?
  17. The only time that the Galvez Bay appeared blue to me was when we were way up about 10 floors in the new hotel (forgot name) and looked out over the balcony. Yes, for that moment it seemed blue. I was certain they had tinted the windows so visitors would believe the bay was always an aqua blue. Ja! Maybe they can artificially color the sand a white shade to make us think we are in Cabo or Cozumel? Hee hee.
  18. I had a good feeling that building was slated next for demolition. With the newer and much more modern 24-Hour Fitness places being built all around its not suprising that this place will go away for good. It seems so out of date and out of place in that spot. The building is not worthy of any historical significance other than old memories. We had a family member that went there as a kid so I know its old. Good luck to you that have invested $ here. Gyms are living hell when it comes to a refund. New topic I know...
  19. What about this? Whats its fate?
  20. Now those are rare photos. Not everday we get to see that up close. That or those would make a great super model photo shoot back drop (hint local photographers). That roof should be used for outdoor soiree's like in Fall/Winter to Spring. It can be done. Have the whole skyline as a backdrop. It could be another Skybar....more hints.
  21. My mind is racing! There is a two story apt red brick building directly in front of Stewart & Stevenson & York/Sampson Street and it is of somewhat historical significance! Has the Landlord's or original owners name embedded above the entry way like they did back in the 1920-30's. (Biting nails) it must be right in the path!? http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Houston&...de=INTERSECTION Can a person still lay in front of a bulldozer in protest? I am serious people there are going to be some good historic buildings that are about vanish. Most are in very recent photos on Haif. Lord yield thy sword for thy path waketh over my dead body!
  22. Although not made in the 80's this film was an excellent spoof of the 80's era and has some very memorable (and strikingly familar people we all knew in HS) moments throughout. The music is what brings back images of those times galore. The director must be (about my age & fellow Haifer's). He hit the nail on the head on this outrageously hilarious film soundtrack of the 80's. Perfecting casting as well!
  23. Imagine peeking out your window from upstairs and seeing this guy parked out in front? Its possible you know.
  24. Agree, IMO the old building was just built in the wrong place to begin with. Was just to obtrusive and close to the street. Just wonder if any of the facade or anything was saved?
