  1. One well known example was the South Texas National Bank on Main. This was a Greek revival structure that was torn down in about 1982 to make way for a development that never happened. The site was used for parking for many years, but I think there may be something there now.
  2. Wasn't there a house in the Heights that had some dinosaur statutes in the yard?
  3. Part of the Shamrock site was used for a building, but the section where the hotel itself was is now parking. The Oil & Gas/Continental Oil building was torn down to construct 1100 Milam.
  4. I would say it would just stumble on as a really big food court.
  5. A large proportion of the downtown population is imprisoned.
  6. Medical Arts Building downtown by Houston Center The Ballpark Place lot across from Minute Maid (former Metropole Hotel building) The Gibraltar Building on Fannin torn down for a hotel that was never built.
  7. Holy Rosary used to have Latin mass. Maybe they still do; I wouldn't know since I was excommunicated.
  8. Oh yes, surely, for after "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo" was recorded it was evident that popular music could never again reach that plateau.
  9. Just finished: Brideshead Revisited Current read: Diamonds Are Forever In the queue: Pompeii, The Life of a Roman Town, Millennium, Tess of the D'Urbervilles
  10. I HATE background music!!! *fist pounds table* Especially the "classic rock" hits from the 1960s to 1980s. When they make me king of the world one of my first decrees will be to ban it. Why is it that every public business feels like they have to have background music?
  11. I suspect it has to do with the cost of excavating and building underground, instead of the usual movie theater solution of cheap slab concrete painted over.
  12. Same here. I'm using a company called Clark McDowell & Kic on Kirby and it worked out fine. 800-522-2781.
  13. The rationale behind mergers are always economies of scale and savings, but they rarely work out as intended. If I were a GM shareholder this is about the LAST thing I would be wanting management to focus on at the moment, since the immediate concern is avoiding bankruptcy. The amazing thing is that even after the government guaranteed loans, GM is rumored to be going to the Fed to try to borrow directly there. Not only would it be a first for the Fed to be turning into a commercial bank, but why on earth is GM out there trying to borrow money that it would spend on a merger? Ford is looking to commonise a lot of its cars with the rest of the world, so you can expect to see Fiestas and Mondeos in the next couple of years. Not the Ka, however.
  14. Connecting Alabama under the loop would make sense. Also: Get rid of the "Uptown" name!
  15. Fantastic article, thanks for that. It captures that weird thing about Houston - despite all the obvious negatives, it is a city you fall in love with when you think you never would. Although of course I'm one of those people that actually like humid climates.
  16. These are fun! It would take a really big budget for this, but I would try to build more through streets so there was more of a grid. The worst thing about the area is the traffic, and a more effective street grid would go a long way to helping disperse traffic (which is why you rarely have major traffic jams downtown). I would also give some thought to closing the Westheimer exit off the West Loop. The exit is too close to 59, and the weaving of cars entering and exiting the loop contributes to the permanent traffic jam there. This may be kind of silly, but I would also try to make the exterior of the Galleria more striking. It is the key building of the whole area, but it always seems almost invisible from the street with the bland 1970s design. It needs a tower or monument or something to give it a more memorable face.
  17. I hate to think of any president, regardless of party, being targeted by assassins, but unfortunately that may be the case. We have even had HAIF members make veiled threats about armed rebellion in the event of an Obama victory. America can do better than mob rule.
  18. How is "meme" pronounced anyway? I don't think I've ever actually heard it spoken. If it were of Greek origin it would be pronounced "me-me".
  19. There used to be a website devoted to photos of people giving the finger to Hummers.
  20. GM and Chrysler are in preliminary merger talks. Why? Who can say?
  21. Calling it Galleria area doesn't diminish it though. Nobody means it as an insult. It isn't an injustice. Ultimately it is just a part of town. It's not like its feelings are going to be hurt by not calling it some made up name, or that "Galleria area" besmirches" a deserving neighborhood.
  22. Great picture. The atrium really was fantastic. One of those places you step into, stop and go "Oh!" It's not like the area is being degraded by being called after a mall. It's a nice mall! Plus, referring to the area as Galleria came naturally, and I would be willing to be most Houstonians think of it that way. Finally, "Uptown" as a name is just kind of icky.
  23. They probably call it Galleria on the same theory that businesses have "River Oaks" in their name when they are miles away. I would only call the area Galleria, never "Uptown" since the Uptown name was just dredged up as a marketing gimmick. By the same token, I call the Dome the Astrodome, not the Reliant Astrodome I just don't see any particular need to adhere to marketing campaigns. They call me Old Coot!
  24. Frankly I don't think the problem is politicians with financial instruments as much as the contingent that views preservation as being equivalent to communism. And yes, I think Weingarten would demolish it out of spite, although here the big problem is that old movie theaters are notoriously difficult to redevelop into other uses.
