  1. Interesting. As it happens I'm thinking of going this spring. One of my colleagues is Hungarian and I'm thinking she can give me the scoop on what to see.
  2. I worked in Atlanta for 9-10 weeks a couple of years back and very much enjoyed it. It's a nice city. It seemed very clean and orderly. Best of all was being able to take the train directly to and from the airport. That was fantastic.
  3. You want to interact with farmers? I'll pass.
  4. Cars and car books in a restored Googie building! That would be heaven for me too! The old Carousel Motel nearby had a very similar roof.
  5. I suspect that tamale vendors, shawarma and fortune tellers isn't quite the "upscale" image that downtown would like to project. For some reason the appeal of farmer's markets is totally lost on me.
  6. Interesting list. I have postcards of the Rossonian, Hirsch, Waverly, Ivanhoe, Butler and Leeland Apartments, none of which are standing. The Rossonian, Beaconsfield and Savoy were all large high-rises. All of the rest were probably smaller two or three floor buildings with only a few units. You can still see some examples of typical old apartments. Frequently there was an open central staircase to improve ventilation.
  7. It will break my heart if this doesn't happen, but I would lay money it is effectively dead. So many redevelopment plans for the Sheraton Lincoln have fallen though for one reason or another. I hate to see that building just a shell for years on end.
  8. Why, imagine that! I am shocked! Shocked! They must be under enormous pressure to hold the line on appraisal values this year.
  9. This cyclist votes strongly for overpasses. A lot of underpasses get a bit seedy and smelly. Have you even taken a bike through the one on North Main? Extremely unpleasant experience. Second, underpasses aren't always well lit, and if you cycle you know that visibility is everything. I don't know why it is, but car drivers don't quite seem to expect bikes in underpasses and I never feel quite safe going through them.
  10. Ah, but the devil is in the details as they say. You make it sound as if the resultant utils can be precisely measured. Quite obviously the determination of utility, and the amount sufficient to justify the resources, are subjective calls. Bear in mind that infrastructure (and I would include airlines) is rarely profitable on its own, so funding decisions are inevitably going to take into account many intangible and political factors. Rail travel might not now be desirable to many people, but there are certainly arguments to be made that transportation funding needs to be tilted more in favor of alternatives like rail. Point taken, but there are a heck of a lot of infrastructure projects coming down the pike that are intended precisely to create or save jobs.
  11. Awwwwwww!!! You know, you really can't take a bad picture of a cat.
  12. Wow! Fantastic pictures! I love the 7th shot (downtown from the southeast) and the ones of the Med Center. It is amazing how big it is.
  13. Yeah, it does have an "older feel", but old as in the 1980s. To me that is what makes it so incongruous. I wouldn't think that a 1980s revival style would have that much of a historical gloss.
  14. The bust in the 1980s was brutal on downtown hotels. The Whitehall, Sheraton, Savoy and Holiday Inn all had to close.
  15. I can't imagine it would be a problem to not get physical mail on weekends. 90% of it is garbage anyway.
  16. It can arise from a number of things, but is frequently an indicator of Alzheimers disease onset.
  17. I'm starting from behind scratch on all this. How does one know if a converter box is necessary, and where are they sold? Where do people get the coupons? If you just had regular ol' cable will it no longer work without the converter? Do channels change when all this happens? (you can see how effectively I isolate myself from current events. )
  18. I don't get it. The bike boxes are for bikes to wait in at traffic lights?
  19. It didn't strike me as photoshopped. As editor said it seems to be the angle that focuses all the clutter. Why does Houston have to have so many overhead power lines? It makes it look so blighted!
  20. I suppose I've been living under a rock or something, but what is this show about?
  21. I think this is a prank on HAIF, swamplot & similar sites. Probably by some bored employee in an architecture firm killing time before he gets laid off.
  22. One might always suggest that drivers who are bothered by cyclists should find routes with fewer bikes and drive elsewhere. I'm sorry, but there's no real alternative to riding on roads if you are trying to do distances or, more importantly, get somewhere. As I said I do not own a car, but I don't sit around asking that people who do drive find alternative routes because I don't like having to deal with them on the streets. I have heard that about bicyclists sticking to the middle of the road, but I find that really hard to do and I'm not sure it is safer if it makes it harder for others to pass you. I do stick close to the curb.
