  1. Marmite? Mushy peas? It's funny, because one wouldn't think there would be a huge export market demand for British cuisine.
  2. There must be something about the Richmond Arms. A couple of years ago I was doing some work at a company that hired a British guy, and within a week he had discovered the Richmond Arms and started hanging out there. It must be listed in the info package they give to UK expats. Besides drinking at Richmond Arms, homesick British could shop at Kroger, which had a small section of UK food imports, PG tips and such.
  3. That was the old city market. It was there from 1928 until the 1950s and was indeed built over the bayou. The Wortham was eventually built on the site.
  4. Several airport trains I have been on have luggage areas by the doors. Even when there isn't it never struck me as a big issue to lug luggage onto trains.
  5. That closed? Holy cow, that place has been around for eons, and it was amazing it stayed open as long as it did.
  6. To tell the truth, I think a lot of British (I couldn't bring myself to say "Brits") would love to live in Houston. It's got a great quality of life at a decent cost. You can't sweat the stereotypes. Every place has them, and few people really take them seriously.
  7. That's funny, but also disturbing. That's the whole problem. Why would you even think to toss your sandwiches out the window?
  8. I took Berlitz courses for a while. It was challenging, but the idea is to get you talking in Spanish so you feel comfortable. You get a stack of books to study for the grammar part. Good luck!
  9. I don't think you can blame it just on teens; there aren't enough around to account for the scope of the problem. Isn't it just that there are too many people who are - shall we say - 'less than gentlemen' who don't care about the rest of the world beyond their own nose? In my mind this is the precisely the same sort that cuts up to the front of back-up freeway turn lanes.
  10. I'm sorry, but blaming the road designers for your own lack of civility has to be the lamest thing I've ever heard.
  11. I hate to say it, but I think that Texans do litter a lot. It is amazing and sad how much trash lines the roads, especially out in the country.
  12. Scary local history here. I had never heard of this case before.
  13. It's not feeders per se, it's just that there may be more available vehicle lane miles. In any event it is hard to generalize that Houston's rush hour isn't as bad as other cities, since local conditions, available roads, layout, employment centers, etc. all can vary so much.
  14. Inasmuch as these kind of things mean anything at all, it seems fair to say that Houston would have the best claim to be energy capital of the US and the world. I'm certainly not aware of any other city that is as dependent on the energy bidness; certainly not Doha. That said, the economies as a whole of the Gulf states are of course centered around oil and gas production, so in that sense the region is the energy capital of the world.
  15. What a shocking rebel she is.
  16. Note duplicate topics merged.
  17. The real question is why did the chickens cross the road?
  18. There's a picture of the Chinese character street signs on the marketing website. I don't think they are trying to get rid of the "Chinatown" name, since it is unlikely many people would call the area "Chinatown" to begin with. On the contrary, it seems they are trying to resurrect the former Chinese character of the area, even if it effectively vanished 50 years ago, to add a little ethnic cachet. It's just another shallow marketing gimmick. You know, a couple of years ago some clown was pushing the "SoDo" name for Midtown, and people have tossed "NoDo" about, and now these nitwits have dreamed up "EaDo". What is it with this city anyway? Do lots of people just feel that we will never be complete as a city until there is a neighborhood or two ending in "Do"? Do people really believe that would confer coolness or world class status? How much more insecure could we possibly act? It's like my mother used to say: "When you try to make an impression, that's the impression you make."
  19. Haven't there been news stories though that satellite radio is bleeding money and may not be long for this world?
  20. I hate to disagree with the estimable Stephen Fox, Houston architectural historian and fellow of the Anchorage Foundation of Texas, but if the post office is distinguished architecture, then I am General Robert E Lee.
