  1. Not in the city, but close by in Brazos Bend park there are plenty you can see.
  2. I'm really hoping that this project gets done. Maybe if it does it will re-start the momentum for some other downtown development, like what happened after the renovation of the Rice and opening of Bayou Place in the late 90s. We could sure use it now.
  3. Back on topic, the fact that Gehry's designs are satirized on TV shows is a good indicator that he's become a bit of a cliche. I would much rather the museum focused on getting a good design this time rather than just worrying about getting a big name. I can't imagine that at this point commissioning Gehry would really add to our architectural reputation in any significant way.
  4. The fact that there are 162 games never really bothered me one way or another. It's kind of nice just seeing how teams slowly change position through the season. What would be the advantage to reducing the number of games? Now, on the other hand, I could make an argument for reducing the number of innings. It's not that the season is too long, it's that a lot of the games are! Look around - half the crowd leaves in the 8th.
  5. I doubt Houston will ever host the Olympics in the foreseeable future, but that's not a bad thing. I don't think one-shot deals like that really do a lot to enhance image in the long run. There's a lot more bang for the buck in improving the basics - making the place attractive, good schools, air quality, transportation, arts, etc. I don't think hosting the Olympics did a lot for Atlanta's image over time. Plus hosting the Olympics is an enormous financial drain, and perhaps the money could be better spent.
  6. Did anyone make it to the rally downtown? I think I would feel better if after the playoffs last season, this one didn't start off with us playing the Cards! Still just the 4th inning though.
  7. It's probably more common than you would think. There is even an award called the Templeton Prize that is given for scientific advances with spiritual objectives. It was just given to a scientist called Charles Townes for advocating convergence of science and religion.
  8. Some discussion on Central Bank here.
  9. I wonder if MLS is really going to be in expansion mode again as soon as 2007. They were eliminating teams as recently as 2002, right? It probably depends on how the two new teams do. As much as I would love to redo the Dome, isn't MLS holding out for promises of new soccer-specific fields (which is why Salt Lake City picked up an expansion team)? The Astrodome's just too big. One aspect of 27's comments I violently disagree with: NO museum for the Oilers. Our tax money is still paying for the "improvements" to the Dome that they demanded in order to stay, before they left anyway. We shouldn't be honoring traitors that way!
  10. Yeah, it's always exciting at the start of a new season (before the bitter reality sets in). I hope to be able to make the Reds game on Sunday. I can't wait!

  12. As Trophy pointed out, now it's really more a matter of rewarding cities for spending the moola rather than concerns over weather. Hence, Super Bowls in Detroit and probably NYC in 2010. (The New York one would have a retractable roof I think).
  13. You are exactly correct. New York has already been promised the 2010 Super Bowl if the Jets win the bidding on the land for the proposed west side stadium. It's a nice gesture to make to all the cash-strapped cities that are coughing up billions to build stadia. What a racket.
  14. From google links that showed when I was looking up either the Savoy or the Conoco weather ball in another topic. Here's one of the links: www.jfk-online.com/alicelho.html Jack Ruby shows up with the Sheraton-Lincoln.
  15. I kind of have mixed feelings about this. The location is poor - the Katy Fwy. really can't stand the additional traffic burden, and the neighborhood doesn't have sufficient connecting cross-streets to handle additional traffic either. I would much rather see mega-developments like this built downtown or in other areas with appropriate infrastructure and better traffic flow.
  16. Before things get too far off topic, political discussions about lawyers or whatnot belong in "Way Off Topic". Thank you.
  17. Classified ads are a victim of the internet. If you post your CV on Monster.com potential employers have the chance to see it (they search there), and it lets you target your job search better than you could relying on classifieds.
