  1. Wait, did this get approved? This goes right by my house and would cause so much more noise. What a truly moronic use of taxpayer money
  2. The Tempe vote for the Arizona Coyotes failed and the league is trying to decide the future of the team. There's speculation that the Coyotes have already played their last game in Arizona. I have to imagine Janis Burke and the Harris County Sports Authority are scrambling the jets today (since this vote failure was a slight surprise) and trying to finalize their big pitch to the league. Does anyone have concrete information on if a team not owned by Tilman can play in the Toyota Center? If that's the case, I don't think Houston will win, since we can't get them into the arena before next season. I also don't think the current owner has any interest in selling the team, so they'd have to build a new arena in Houston, if that rumor is true.
  3. This is what Incarnate Word Academy has done with Crane. Crane is building a big parking garage for the new Astros Village, but is reserving a certain number of spaces for IWA
  4. This is such a terrible idea that I hope doesn't catch on. As if traffic isn't congested enough as-is in most major metropolitan cities, now we have to add fleets of cars with no one in them? And if this is successful, the money will go directly to a massive corporation, with no individual workers making any profit. Boo!
  5. I guess all that is true, but I'm just a little skeptical of this portion of downtown improving in the next decade. The Astros entertainment district isn't currently expected to expand north of Minute Maid and I haven't heard about them extending the bayou trail beyond the Jose Campos Torres plaza. Also, I don't think the i45 Cap Park is going to extend this far north. Again, I would love for this area to take off and for this development to do well, but personally I would have tried building apartments directly on the Austin bikeway, closer to Minute Maid, closer to the Bayou trails, etc. Just my 2 cents tho
  6. Just rode by this today and it left me puzzled. All of the weird/slow process aside, does anyone know why the heck they decided to build apartments in that specific location? I'm all about trying to make Downtown Houston more walkable and vibrant, so I'll gladly take new developments where we can get them, but this seems like such an odd location to me. It's located between two (essentially) highway on/off-ramps and is in a sea of parking lots. Also it doesn't even really take advantage of the bayou right there, since it's about 3 blocks too far east. I guess if I lived there, I'd be at Frost Town and Irma's every day, but otherwise there just isn't anything there. Does anyone know of the thought process behind this?
  7. The owner also owns the strip center down the road with Gloss Nail Bar, Nava De Massage, and Barnaby's Cafe. I'd imagine they're going to put in a new strip center with a similar appearance/vibe, since they seem to be crushing it with that area (based on the crazy number of cars that are always there)
  8. Seems to me like the bulk of midtown isn't getting the population infill that they're hoping for. There are pockets that do well, like the Woodrow's/Dogwood/Wonder Bar area, but the lion's share of midtown is dead and a little seedy. Not sure how that's going to change anytime soon, since I don't know of any more apartments being built. Maybe the proposed changes to the streetscapes will attract more people?
  9. I wonder what's happening here. It looks like one owner owns all of the parcels on that square block and now it's clear they're taking down the green building too
  10. Parlor Donuts is great. I've been to the one in Destin, it's extremely popular
  11. Yes. This seems like a big blow to the Houston Center and downtown generally
  12. Yeah, the drone photos are some of the best parts of this forum. Keep them coming, Hindesky and Cityliving!
  13. Man, 49,000 square feet is a lot to fill.
  14. I've been thinking about this a lot recently because I've been riding my bike on the Bagby Promenade to work. Redeveloping Bayou Place would do so much for this side of downtown. As it stands, the building is essentially closed off on 3 sides for a total of 5 blocks and the equivalent of 2 blocks along the Bayou path, creates a sketchy overpass on one block, creates a very sketchy and ugly 2 block stretch on the bayou path, and has an outdated and uninviting setback at the main entrance. They could completely transform the Theater District by tearing down that eye-sore, building some new and exciting architecture with ground floor retail, glass, lobbies, atriums, etc. on all sides, and incorporating the bayou into the plans, instead of completely turning their back on it. The building also completely visually cuts off the Hobby Center, tranquility park, and little tranquility park from the rest of the Theater District. If you're standing out front of the Hobby Center, you don't think "the rest of the Theater District is that direction" because all you can see is a bunch of loading docks. Those Ziegler Cooper plans look infinitely nicer, even if they're not perfect. Maybe something will be announced after Lynn Wyatt Square opens and gets a lot of foot traffic, but I'm not going to hold my breath
  15. Purely from an X's and O's standpoint, this is a very good hire for a young team that needs direction
  16. Agreed, when they announced the Harlow District, I thought they were going to be dropping more buildings in between the two spaces. This is just ridiculous and hardly a "District"
  17. The guy I talked to is the CEO of the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, Central Houston, and Downtown District. He told me he's tired of downtown Houston "keeping secrets" and he wants the skyline to be more inviting to visitors and let them know about all of the Fortune 500 companies downtown
  18. When I first moved to Houston, that spot was a burger place called Graffiti's (I think). Based on Google Street View history, that spot has been vacant for 10 of the last 13 years. Very strange, I wonder what's going on with that building
  19. I spoke with Kris Larson a few weeks ago and he told me about the sign restriction, as if it was still in effect. It sounds like he wants to get rid of it tho, so I'm sure if it's not already gone, it will be gone within 5 years
  20. Which corner? The Chase motor bank?
  21. Yes, there is a restriction on buildings having signage in downtown. Maybe this is allowed because it's just the address of the building?
  22. If I had the money, I'd buy this stretch, combine it with the open lot by Stanford, and turn it all into one big stretch of new bars and restaurants (ala the Harlow District or Autry Park without the multifamily). You could turn this stretch into a neighborhood of its own with the right construction along those lots. But I have nowhere near the money for that, so here we are.
  23. According to the Houston Chronicle, Verde Garden will be opening on April 25.
  24. Thanks for sharing that! I've never seen their strategic plan before and was totally guessing on the office/garage
