  1. No, but it's not supposed to be torture, either. Many British courses penalize even the best shots by happenstance. I don't understand that philosophy, nor do I agree with it. It's like a guy running the length of the field about to score a touchdown and having a guy come off the bench and tackle him. It's just not fair. BTW, the above analogy is for 57T-Bird.
  2. The British have always had a proclivity to inflict pain upon their captives. My guess is that it was former British schoolmasters who grew tired of whacking the bottoms of their students, and moved up to a higher level of punishment
  3. When the section of 610 was being built north of I-10 around
  4. I was born and raised in The Heights, and lived there for most of my 60 years before escaping Houston for Bastrop three years ago. I don
  5. I believe it was on Telephone just south of Belfort. It opened around 1978. It was also the worst hamburger I ever had, reminiscent of those burgers I used to get at The Whaler in New London while in sub school up there
  6. One of the very few things I miss about Houston is the Farmer's Market on Airline. Austin doesn't have anything to compare to it, either. HEB and WalMart are the only choices we have here in Bastrop. But, they'll do.
  7. I used to go to a place just east of Shepherd on 19th across from the barber shop. Of course, I don't know if either is still there since I haven't been there in nearly 3 years now.
  8. If any of you are passing through or near Cuero, it would be well worth it to take a gander at the DeWitt County Courthouse. The courthouse had been closed since 2005 for renovations, and reopened just last week. I went through Cuero last Thursday on the way to Rockport and planned only to drive by and maybe take a photo of the exterior. It was obvious a lot of work had just been completed, so we went in just to check it out. Oh, what a treat that turned out to be! The interior looks like it was brand new a hundred years ago, and that
  9. I checked through my road atlas, and if I am not mistaken, Texas is the only state in the nation that does not have an interstate, or a non-stop highway between its largest city and its capitol. What a shame! I hope they close the 969 crossover. They could easily reroute the highway around Burleson Crossing to where 304 now terminates at 71. There will be a street around the shopping center, but not sure if that will be the highway. That crossover is a very dangerous intersection what with cars coming south on 71 coming over the hill at 80 mph or more. They finally put up a light at 1209 and 71. I would like to see an overpass there, but there are other intersections more in need of one. 21/95 as well as Tahitian at 71 are prime candidates. If the area around the Hyatt grows much more, Pope Bend Road will become another candidate.
  10. Suffice to say that Burnett and Houston were not the best of friends. When the Yellowstone arrived at San Jacinto following the battle, Burnett refused to allow the wounded Houston on board. The captain interceded and allowed Houston passage to Galveston. As a bit of added trivia, when Houston arrived at the pier in New Orleans from Galveston, a crowd gathered to greet the hero of San Jacinto. In the crowd was 17-year-old Margaret Lea who 4 years later would later became his wife.
  11. As a kid, usually on the way to Galveston or San Leon, I would gaze longingly at the Helena as we passed because it had such a great looking swimming pool. As it lost its luster, and even with the name change, I would still get a warm feeling every time I passed the place.
  12. If you can find a copy of the book, The History of Houston Heights" by Sister M Agatha, there is a fold out map of the original Heights attached to the back page.
  13. Dick Harmon was the pro at ROCC until his death in 2006, but he was born in 1947. His father was Claude Harmon who was head pro at Winged Foot and then Thunderbird CC. Claude was born in 1916, and could be the right age for that photo. However, I don't believe he was ever associated with ROCC except through his son Dick. But I could be wrong. I have looked up a few additional photos of Hagen, and I am almost positive that is he on the right. Hagen is one of the most famous golfers ever. His 11 Major Championships, including the US Open twice and the British Open four times, ranks third only to Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. His importance and contribution to golf is immeasurable. He was truly one of the Greats, and I believe that makes the photo all that more important
  14. Most of the projects done on TOH are in the Northeast. Their insulation needs are much greater. What's better for them is not always best for this area.
  15. I was looking for a particular porn site, and I typed in the wrong URL and got this place by mistake. So, I thought that as long as I was here, . . . . . .
  16. Just took a quick peek at this site. Being a golfer, I looked at that category and noticed this photo entitled "River Oaks Country Club 1928" I'm not positive, but I believe the guy on the right is the famous Walter Hagen.
  17. I am almost positive the Windsor Theater was built in conjunction with the first Cinerama production,
