  1. I hope to god they put the W downtown so you can watch them commit suicide. Cause I don't know what I'm talking about. Hopefully their market analysts are smarter than that. The Galleria makes more sense because it has a mix of major businesses and corporations, successful restaurants, Highland Village, and the main attraction being the Galleria, which International travelers who are savvy of the W flock to and spend money. The Galleria area hotels are pretty dated, even the Houstonian. And the Derek, well its the Derek. It's like IKEA. Duh, it's a no brainer. Honestly I would prefer it to be downtown as I live nearby and work downtown so it would be a welcomed addition as far as dining and drinking options go. From what I know to be the current state of the industry, I just don't think they would do that to themselves. Speaking of drinking, gotta go. Ciao Houston 19something.
  2. That just proves my original point that downtown is not the place for the W. That's where my commentary originated. Thank you for validating what I said. NEXT
  3. Well it wasn't clear because I don't think New Juniper was saying that either. He said those hotels are currently not meeting those numbers, not that they should be closed down by now. Read people.
  4. I'm wondering if his son told him that story after he discovered the money. I'm confused on the sequence of events. On another note, about 5 years ago I was living in an apt off of W. Dallas. When I checked my mail there was a thick envelope addressed to some weird name at my address and apt. number. I know I shouldn't have, but I opened it and inside was a ziploc full of an orange powdery substance and a letter in another language, possibly an African language. This was during the anthrax scare so I kind of freaked. I called the cops and told them they needed to come get it because I wasn't going to take it to them and risk getting pulled over. Of course no one came so I drove it like a dumbass to the post office and said, here u go, do what you want with it.
  5. I do work for an architecture firm and also in the hospitality industry. I do several other things and I consider myself abreast of what's going on in Houston. Certain events and conventions sell out the boutiques once the other guys are booked. My point is, downtown is depressed right now as far as hospitality goes and it's obvious. Not day time business; like I said office space is at capacity and at a premiuim according to the HBJ. As a result, several new buildings are under way or awaiting construction to begin. Hopefully the Pavillions will help change things and make downtown more of a destination for travelers, leisure, shopping etc. I also agree with Paulanthony that Houston can support a W, just not downtown. Galleria area would be the better choice.
  6. To me or to New Juniper? I didn't say they were supposed to have gone under by now, I said they struggle.
  7. Exactly. A mini vacation or a special occasion. Go to the pool and spa, get room service, etc. It's fun and romantic with the right person and if you want to drop the cash.
  8. Right. Sorry, I didn't include that and the Marriott Crowne and Hyatt. Like I said, the chains do fine. Those are also not as high end as the ones I mentioned earlier. Good point in stating that you're business partner comes here for meetings and stays at the Double Tree. Kind of goes to show that the business clientele are staying in the chains such as this and the Hilton, etc. The boutique hotels struggle downtown.
  9. Or the street before it, Prairie, trying to get on Memorial at 5. It's a cluster f#$%. Closing any of these streets would be a disaster.
  10. Being half cajun, I like Mardi Gras, Rajun, and Jax Grill. I love to Zydeco dance and I love the diversity in that place. Old people dancing with their grand kids, black men dancing with white women, hispanics with blacks, whites with hispanics. It's great. The guys ASK you to dance then leave you alone after that. Treebeards is a healthy, more modern twist on Cajun food, it's good, but it's not really the real thing. By the way, there's 3. Market Square, the church and a kiosk in the tunnels.
  11. You're going in the wrong direction:) lol Got to priceline
  12. http://gigglesugar.com/342826 I can't seem to paste the link. Go to this address, it's so funny!
  13. You should look around, there are better places and with good deals. I agree with native. And Hoover damn is cool. I did it by helicopter and flew into the Grand Canyon. It's cool to fly over the Vegas strip and see it from that perspective. You're going to have fun. If you haven't been in summer desert heat, it's way different. It was 106 last week when I was there. You can't lay out outside the pool. Gotta be in the water or you'll roast. P.S. If you like Asian food and want to go to a fun trendy place for a nice dinner one night that has a great bar and good food and isn't as expensive as a lot of Vegas restaurants, I would recommend Tao in the Venetian. The one in NY is less touristy obviously, but the locals go to the one in Vegas. Gotta have a reservation though.
  14. That's funny! I have two orange guys that look just like that one!
  15. I am also a Vegas afficionado/regular and I have stayed everywhere as far as the nicer hotels go, but I haven't stayed at the Luxor. I have also heard it is in need of renovation. Since Harrah's bought Paris and Caesar's, I hear you can get some great deals. Caesar's pool is pretty happening. Look into Monte Carlo and Treasure Island too. I just came back last week and stayed at Mandalay, which I really like in the summer because they have the best pools. We paid a lot for a weekend, $600. ouch! NY NY is ok, they have good deals too. I stayed at Venetain once and got a pretty good deal, but there are a lot of elderly people there, especially the pool.
  16. Are you talking about Wakefield near Bissonnet just outside of West U? If so there are two kind of cool places right near there on the other side of Kirby that have been around forever. The Volcano and Kay's. There's a new sports bar opening where Timberwolf once was but not sure of the name. It may have opened already. There's a great little quaint Italian restaurant in a house there too called Antica Osteria if you want to take her to a romantic dinner. Prices aren't bad either. It's near Greenbriar on Bissonnet.
  17. I'm in the industry for one. I have a friend who is the catering director at the Lancaster. My other friend recently left his position as a manager at the Icon because he said its falling apart. Its empty and the managment is screwed up and now Whiskey is gone. Go check it out, there's no one there. I also know a girl who does marketing for the Alden, who also says numbers are down. I am on a committee of a networking group and all of these hotels are dieing to work with us for business. My friend came in town and stayed at the Magnolia last week in fact and it was also very quiet. They were already in trouble from the start from what I hear, that's why it took so long to open. The only thing at capacity and is doing well downtown is office building space. It's unfortunate. Hopefully they can wait it out like many of the establishments tried to do when they started tearing up the roads, street by street, starting with the rail on Main. So many places have closed and lots of the buildings down Main have For Lease signs on them. It was kind of eerie (sp?) when I walked down Main a few weeks ago. The old days were fun. The Hilton and the 4 Seasons are obviously large chains with meeting space, etc, so naturally they are in a better position.
  18. Buffalo Grille, Farrago, Breakfast Klub, Barnaby's, & Shade are all favorite breakfast/brunch places of mine, BUT... HAS ANYONE HAD KOLACHES FROM THE KOLACHE SHOPPE IN THE TUNNELS downtown? They are not a big corporation like the Kolache Factory and they make those taste like the McDonalds of kolaches. They have several little kiosks throughout the tunnel system downtown. They are sersiously THE BEST. The bread is buttery and to die for. Killer hang over food and $1.05. It takes everything I have not to eat one as they call my name every morning, especially when I'm going to get a yucky egg white omellette.
  19. Comments like that are why you should stay in midtown.
  20. Ha! That's awesome. There's a couple of people I would like to "go first."
  21. I hope if the landmark proposal actually passes it will help save them, but even then it's not guaranteed. The 6th ward holds so much history as well.
  22. I got my ears pierced on my 5th birthday at the Sakowitz on Post Oak. I still have the earrings. That was a beautiful store. I thought I was so fancy:)
