  1. So exciting. Anyone planning on going? I imagine it’ll be pretty crazy.
  2. This building looks way cooler in person. It goes together much more nicely than in photos
  3. Midtown TIRZ OKs infrastructure deal with Rice around ION campus An economic development deal struck between the Midtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone and Rice Management Corp., representing The Ion, would allow for Rice to lead a series of improvements such as sidewalk and street repairs, the construction of public plazas and a new parking garage. The Midtown TIRZ, which collects funds through a portion of area property taxes, agreed to reimburse Rice for a portion of the projects, providing $65 million toward the effort.
  4. That is a seriously nice design. I like how they tied it in with the other buildings. So will they be connected up? Let’s see, this one, The Hawthorne, and what is the other one?
  5. That’d be awesome. Like a circulator system. I’m curious to see what metro’s got in mind. (If this idea has been proposed. It’d be interesting)
  6. Yeah this thing is 25mi long along the entire corridor. I would be really shocked if they don’t open it 1 segment at a time. I’m willing to bet they want to try to connect up Lower Uptown/Westpark TC to Wheeler quickly and get that open first
  7. I’ve been seeing a lot of opposition to this over on Reddit (among other places), but I’m confused. I thought that segment 3 has been pretty heavily-supported overall, and it was mostly segments 1 & 2 that were in contention. I keep seeing people talking about lanes being added- do they mean the whole project, a specific segment, or is it the putting multiple freeways together and giving it a big footprint people are talking about? I was under the impression that txdot wanted to add managed/transit lanes but not much else. Is the project still open for public comment, or did they close the surveys? What is the timeline they’re looking at right now?
  8. Wow, awesome! I think I saw snippets of the hard hat tour- one of the local news stations was airing it I believe. (Maybe FOX 26?)
  9. This is so exciting- so these projects (TMC3, Levit Green) are hoping to consolidate R&D in biotech/pharmaceuticals/medical devices/etc., and hope to attract more talent to the region, yes? How large is our presence in this field today?
  10. I’ve only been to Uchi a couple of times but isn’t the building it’s in a historic landmark? (It has a marker of some sort-maybe it’s just a historical marker?) How would that work?
  11. Oh my gosh I am so hyped. There’s a Blue in Dallas that we try to hit whenever we’re up there, really good sushi, fantastic selection of vegetarian/vegan sushi and other offerings if you’re about that, all around really good place to eat.
  12. Wow, I was kinda wondering when inner loop would hit 500k people. What areas are primarily driving the growth, or is it just sorta spread out over the whole area? IIRC wasn’t the previous highest-ever inner loop population just under 500k in the 1960s? That is awesome that people are moving to the “core” area and revitalizing it more. I read that the inner loop population in 2010 was 443,949 people. So in 10 years, it added just over 50k people to what’s already a pretty built-out area. Sorta related but I’m super curious to see numbers for the Uptown/Galleria area.
  13. In sorta-related news, the inner Katy BRT self-guided virtual public meeting is online now, and one of the proposed stations they’ve added is for Franklin St. That connectivity would do incredible things for POST if it winds up being included! (they’re open for comments until 8/31, btw)
  14. The self-guided virtual meeting is online now. You can submit comments until 11:59 pm on 8/31. Here is the link I was really happy to see all the new stations being taken into consideration, and REALLY excited to see the proposed Franklin station- very smart of them to tie it into Amtrak/POST. I wonder if someone at POST/Downtown tossed their hat into the ring on that one? If so, that’s pretty brilliant, especially with the future extension to the HSR station, connectedness to Uptown, that will all really help that project.
  15. Trying not to get too OT, but adding to the list of hotels, apparently the Hogg Palace Lofts were re-opened as a hotel by Sonder. Not sure exactly when that happened (but super glad it did, that’s legitimately been one of my favorite downtown buildings since I was a kid) Glad to hear something is being done here. Green Street always seemed like a development that arrived a bit too early to Downtown.
  16. Looking at the renders, I was curious to know if besides this project and those apartments going up in TMC also, how common it is to see underground cisterns built under projects to hold stormwater here in Houston?
  17. FWIW I was there walking around yesterday and didn’t even immediately notice the substation. They’ve got it pretty covered up with greenery it looked like, but in the future it’d be nice if they moved it. But as it stands it’s hardly the worst thing in Downtown. The Skanska site had equipment on it, but I didn’t get a pic because I couldn’t really see anything lol
  18. I’m sad to see those beautiful buildings go, but I’m really glad they were able to reach an agreement and move forward in a way that made residents happier, without totally derailing the project.
  19. From the Houston Chronicle. Basically, Houston is considering changes to the planning rules that would allow for more so-called “Missing Middle” housing to be built. (housing between the typical single family home and denser, multifamily apartment complexes). There is a survey online right now until August 16th that they are asking members of the public to complete. This appears to be planned to go before City Council in 2022. How do you feel about this style of housing? Have you ever lived somewhere that had it?
