Houston Embassy Suites Hotel set to break ground in March

Houston Business Journal - by Jennifer Dawson Reporter

American Liberty Hospitality Inc. plans to break ground in March on a 262-room Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Houston after securing construction financing.

Amegy Bank and two other lenders in Texas provided more than $30 million in construction financing for the 19-story hotel at a time when bank funding is very difficult to come by.

Houston-based American Liberty Hospitality, which has been working on the project for two years, will build the full-service hotel at 1515 Dallas Ave. at LaBranch. The property is expected to open in fall 2010.

The hotel site is located near the George R. Brown Convention Center, Hilton Americas-Houston and Discovery Green park. The proposed hotel's proximity to the convention center garnered tax breaks for the developer.

The City of Houston has an ordinance in place that gives back 50 percent to 100 percent of Houston's portion of the hotel's occupancy tax on an annual basis over seven years. The ordinance is designed to encourage the building of hotels within walking distance of the George R. Brown.

Nick Massad, president of American Liberty Hospitality, says the project will help attract more convention business to Houston.

The new all-suite hotel will have 6,000 square feet of meeting space, a rooftop swimming pool, restaurant and a street-level caf

  2. According to NewQuest's website, the 24 Hour Family Sport center that was to go in next to the new Lowe's is no longer in the works. Does anyone know what happened to that project? Also, on the northeast corner of Kuykendahl and 2920, north of the Wal-Mart, an Academy is set to go in instead of a JC Penney that was originally going in that spot. We need restaurants in this area!!

Sorry, coming into this thread kinda late. I was up that way a lot during Ike (they were the only ones with Internet access for miles) and I never saw a 24 Hour Fitness.

  3. I'm just tired out by all the crap for sale. I'm not oppsed to buying things, there's just so little I really want. I just refuse to pay a grand for a new tv as long as the one I have ( not thin) works.

Yikes. I must sound a hundred years old.

I'm the same way. I mean, I am all for new stuff, but not just because it's new. I tend to buy stuff that I need and when the other stuff is obsolete or just wears out. Unfortunately, my Sony Wega (flat-screen, but not LCD/thin) has a perfect picture still!

    Rats!

I celebrated 'buy nothing day', although I did go out for dinner. The black friday shopping hysteria has always mystified me. I generally dislike shopping as it is, but the competitive nature of shopping for black friday deals sounds like a nightmare. I'd rather take my chances online or during the slow times.

    Black Friday. Cyber Monday.

These retailers are playing folks like a fiddle.

  4. So far, Nothing. But, some of these prices are getting pretty cheap. I might buy a 20-22 inch LCD HDTV for my kitchen. I'm also looking for a laptop, but I will not spend more than about $500 for one, so I am somewhat limited. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you considered a netbook.. .I know Asus is a big manufacturer, but recently Dell and others have gotten into the game. They can be had for under $500 generally.

  5. while pondering my least favorite christmas songs, i couldn't help but think of my favorite seasonal cd's or singles. so here goes.

nat king cole - the christmas song

    jazz to the world

vince guaraldi trio - a charlie brown christmas

    carpenters - christmas portrait

windham hill - celtic christmas series, a winter's solstice series, carol's of christmas,

george winston - december, piano solo

modern mandolin quartet - the nutcracker suite

squirrel nut zippers - christmas caravan

glenn miller orchestra - in the christmas mood I & II

there is also an ella fitzgerald christmas cd that i love. i can't remember the name of it right now. diana krall's christmas cd is on my latest wishlist.

anyone have more suggestions for "essential" christmas cds? i'd like to hear what you're listening to.

IF I were gonna listen to CM this year it would prolly be Nat Cole, Darlene Love, Mariah Carey, or something off the Very Special Christmas album by Ronnie Spector.

  6. 1. The total lack of decent ethnic food. For things that aren't Mexican, you've usually only got one, overhyped restaurant with mediocre food, high prices, and less-than-stellar health reports. Chain restaurants are also missing. However, burgers and pizza seem good.

    2. The lack of a second mall or better. Post Oak Mall is pretty lame when you realize that, while the city has grown in leaps and bounds, the mall hasn't added since 1982. The food court and specialty stores are pitiful. There's no theater.

    3. Corrupt city officials.

    4. Swimming pools are overpriced, overcrowded, and also sorely lacking in amenities.

    5. Corrupt city officials. (ex: Romei)

    6. Obsession with sprawl

    7. No entertainment options (unless you like Gattitown, Chuck E Cheese, Grand Central Station, or the bars...)

    8. Long and dangerous stoplights (particularly along Texas Avenue)

    9. Not on Google Maps Street View

    10. Always a "too little, too late" feel to it all.

Sounds like a real happening place. No, honestly, I have never been, so don't have anything to add or subtract from this list.

... BUT ... if this is what's going on there, I doubt I will visit any time soon.

  7. I just wanted to know what everyone thinks of the new lighting on the crown of the Continential Building. Personally, i miss the blue lighting with the Continential logo but i still like the new lighting because its a little more pronounced. Does anyone know why they stopped the blue lighting?

I'll look the next time I am down that way. I loved the blue with the faint Continental logo imprinted inside.

  8. i think you'd need to start mac out with something more familiar like the theme to what's happening!

I don't need that kinda music, and not sure what you are really implying by "What's Happening."

I just think his music is cheesy.

  9. U.S. on the list with Pei's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I have to agree with a lot of those. The Denver Public Library and the Paul Allen Music Experience aren't so bad, but I have never liked Buckingham Palace and the other London buildings are just terrible (that shopping mall that looks like a metallic bauble and the stadium with the cranes sticking out the roof ... ick!)
