  1. I was just curious about something. I think I was doing a search about something from Houston's past and came across HAIF. How did you all come to be members here?

I like bulletin boards and had just moved to Houston in 2004. I think I did a search for community or something and this popped up.

  2. I got a similar response from a friend when I met him downtown (where he works) for lunch one day. I asked him if he was excited about the Pavilions and he had no clue what I was talking about, even though he worked at 1111 Fannin - NEXT DOOR.

Once I explained it all to him, his only response was: "cool". <_<

It makes you wonder if certain hu-mans are under some sort of sinister, alien mind control.

  3. Do a survey of the people you meet - at work, park, church etc. Ask about Fred Hartman Bridge, Washburn Tunnel, Elysian viaduct, Discovery Green, Houston Pavillions, Memorial Hermann Tower. See how many people know about these places. Some 40-yr old native Houstonian don't even know there are at least two airports in Houston! How dumb!

People are just into themselves and their trinkets and each other rather than their surroundings. I find it sad and annoying. I like to share in the beauty and wonder of a place, natural and manmade landmarks. I have a relative that works downtown and she can't name a single building outside of the one she works in...

However, she can name who is doing who in Hollywood.

  4. Agreed. Most people don't take an interest in the world around them. They know their little world and comfort zone. Anything beyond that simply doesn't exist. It's like how someone I know in New York thinks it's possible to drive to Houston in a couple of hours. Blinders. Willfully.

Another illustration -- A HAIFer will wonder if the new strip center being built in the neighborhood will have a green roof and a traffic management plan. A non-HAIFer will wonder if there's going to be a Subway and a dry cleaner.

I would take your first comment a little further. Not only do most people not notice the world around them, they do not care to know about the world around them. Many people are so self-absorbed in their mobile phones, their cars, their radios or music, that they do not even notice what is taking place around them in the real world.

It's really sad that most people are so clueless and unaware ... and their proud of it.

I get sick of hearing "I dunno."

  5. That's the one I frequent, but the Woodlands to Willowbrook is not a quick drive.

So right. But I go the back way to Research Forest on my recent 3x week commute to The Woodlands. From 1960, I go up Kuykendahl to 2920, make a right over to Gosling and take it up Research. Kinda back woods, but I just can't take I45 on a daily basis. It really does rattle my nerves.

  6. i can say ditto almost 100%, except that i am not married or from the east coast.

I am not sure why this loss is being blamed on blacks either, but I will say that coalitions are built over time. The black community by-and-large is very religious and the older community (the ones that tend to vote) are very conservative on these types of issues. I doubt that the majority of my family would vote against this type of measure even though I and a sister of mine are gay and they love us unconditionally. It's just not something they are ready for.

  7. I really like the taste of Chipotle's food, but found out that it has a lot of sodium in most of it. Damnit. Same for Chik-fil-A. Good tasting but a LOT of salt in just about everything they serve.

I left out the best fast food Mexicana..... Taco Cabana

Their food has declined in taste, appearance, and quality of late. And the prices have steadily risen.

  8. Straight up action, my friend.

Actually that was my complaint. There was enough action that the underlying plot was fairly scrimpy, so even though it was certainly exciting, it wasn't really as engaging as Casino Royale. Point taken about the long card game though. And I'm the first to confess it may be a bit much to be asking for subtle, engaging plots from Bond movies.

Yeah, I think you have to take Bond movies at face value. They are generally a little cheesy, action oriented, and the plots are thin (at best). They are just fun movies that you can watch with little emotional involvement ... like when you want to escape the family for the holidays.

  9. So, what else should the district do to improve?

Smaller classes, better instructors, a VISION and EXPECTATION for what they want for their school and students (excellence), better parent-teacher-student partnership building.

I think you also missed one of the newer Spring HS named Wuensche (sp?).

  10. I know some people don't consider McDonald's "dining," but every year I get really excited when McRibs are available again. And I just saw a TV commercial proclaiming it as such.

For me it is the single most delectable piece of fast food there is. With pickles or without it's good either way. I don't even bother with the fries or Coke -- just gimme a couple of Ribwiches and I'm good.

This year I might try freezing a few to see how well they keep. It might be a way to get through those long McRibless months of spring and summer.

I can't believe I've never had one. I have always imagined them to be either sickly sweet or putridly sour.

    ?

  11. I guess the bigger question is how will Obama use his chief of staff. Bush needed an evil mastermind like Rove because he was, well, not very bright.

I see Obama's CoS as part consigliere, part Alfed the Butler.

I think he'll be a pitbull. Only without the lipstick.

  12. You, macbro, were afraid of rioting white mobs in the streets. From my perspective, you're the mob.

I wasn't afraid of whites rioting in the streets. I was turning the question back to the one that asked if blacks would be rioting.

As for your mob quote about me, I find it offensive.

  13. You asked me for my Canada (can't afford to move anywhere) reasons - I gave them above. Did you get a chance to read them? I'm just scared. Too scared to hope.

Sorry, sometimes I just read from the bottom up, missing comments that come before.

Honestly, this shouldn't be a time for fear (we've had enough of that the last 8 years).

We are the strongest, most powerful nation on earth (maybe in the history of the planet). Ask yourself... "What are you so afraid of?"

That is the question... those in power have fed on and instigated our fears. But when you stop the madness and realize your internal power (okay, not gonna get all Dr. Phil on you) and our collective power as a country, there really shouldn't be anything we should be afraid of if we are really living right and doing the right thing by people.

Because often we are not, I think it creates fear and doubt in our brains because we say one thing and do another.

It's late and I am probably babbling, but I think there is a shred of truth in a little I'm saying.

I am so proud of the young vote! I was worried that we weren't going to show up but we did. This is the election where the youths changed America! I am so proud to be an American!

    Oh, So Presidential!!!!

I think we're all very proud. Or at least we should be.

  14. Yes, it is.

If this admendment passes... CA loses its title as the progressive state, socially.

In about a week, same-gender marriages will begin in CT.

In 2009, I bet NJ follows suit.

The future may not lie in CA... but the northeast.

The Field Poll indicated that this amendment would fail (49-44, something like that). Such polls, by Field, have been proven wrong only about 5% of the time. So if it passes... it just speak volumes to the wanton harm that one group (the majority) wish to impose on another. Like putting Jim Crow laws to a vote in the South.

And watching Karl Rove on FoxNews right now. Man, he makes me ill just listening to him.

Has anyone EVER seen that man smile?

  15. So why would you say that to me?

I was trying to get at what you were saying? I hate people saying one thing, meaning another.

Just say what you gotta say.

If you're moving to Canada, then why? Because we have a new Democrat president? because he's black (or half-black)? The new policies.

    Be specific.
