  1. By giving them false hopes, thats what will make Detroit fail. We want them to be competitive based on it being good in all areas, not just because they are American. We are not doing ithem any favors if we don't make them see reality. Because they think there will always be brand royalty based on it being an American brand, they will not focus on real market needs, which is the only thing that will make them a success in the long run.
  2. isn't gt, vette and viper more expensive than supra turbo, m3 and m5?
  3. Good thing you are the exception rather than the norm. Americans are getting smarter and giving american brand cars a pass. But car rental companies keep buying those unwanted cars to keep the 3 in business. Even that is changing
  4. I think this is worth repeating, just in case someone tries to pass of the good points of japanese brand cars as only long lasting. And I think I will take those real expert reports over online forums posters self proclaim expertise.
  5. I find it stupid to choose something just because its an american brand, especially for something like cars. I hope ppl don't choose american brand cars to be patriotic, because it is doing more harm than good. It gives the 3 a fake sense of security and less likely to strive for real technical competitiveness because they think there is always a market out there for them no matter what, and this lack of response and feel for real market contributes to their continuous decline. I will choose the most reliable suv or car, american or not. At this time, reports after reports boast the reliability of non-american brand cars so thats what I have to go with. Maybe in the next century, the big 3 can catch up. It could be worse, imagine how embarrassing it would be if 50 years later we start seeing made in china cars overtake american brands. And BTW, reliability reports also includes handling, braking, acceleration, fuel economy, comfort, safety etc, not just how long they last.
  6. Ouch, coming from such a beautiful and clean place, you must have been shocked at the ugliness and dirtiness here huh. unfortunately yeah, there's empty buildings, also parking lots, hanging wires, strip malls and flatness. And how do you ever cope with the humidity. At least its not cold.
  7. Cities that comes to mind Seattle: Beautiful but very cloudy all the time, coffee, alternative music, books Portland: Beautiful, also cloudy, healthy, bicycles, trees San Francisco and Northern CA: Most beautiful places, best mild weather, wine country, gay culture, tech companies, super damn expensive, pacific ocean, roadtrips down to southern CA with great cities in between. Las Vegas: Hot, dry, fun, a place to one must visit but not stay LA: Traffic and sprawl, like Houston but with beaches and mountains, hollywood and other tourist stuff, expensive, roadtrips up to northern CA with great beachtowns in between. Chicago: Big, pizza, cold, museums. Lilies? New York: A real urban city, stylish, has everything good but also everything bad, damn expensive Austin: College town, laid back, rolling hills, music, techy smart stuff San Antonio: Alamo, riverwalk, Texas tourism San Diego: Nice, stepford wives, super expensive Miami and florida: beaches, disney, fun, old folks, hurricanes Boston: lots of colleges, cold, expensive Houston: oil, flat, sprawl, ugly, like LA but without the good beaches, mountains and other tourist stuff, but we have space center, and much cheaper place to live than other cities. New Orleans: when will it get back to its former self Dallas: not diverse like Houston Oklahoma: Had to go help out a friend who went to OU, never went back again.
  8. I think the some of the ones you listed are worth fighting for, but under god in our currency seems more like a symptom and removing does not really help to remove the ingrained influence. Some have claim that it helps distribute religious propaganda but it actuality it doesn't. Its definitely not like prayers in schools.
  9. Many ppl unfortunately do not know about the 50s part where it was added in. but 'under god' was in coins long before that though. I don't know why ppl use the word 'religion' in separation of religion and state. Only one religion tries to do that. Why don't ppl just use christianity. Its not like buddhism or muslim or any other religion tries to sneak their policies into our state affairs.
  10. i thought there is no sales tax in OR or was it no state income tax? I thought the weather was really nice every time I go, It's grey to look at, but isn't it great to feeling cool all the time and not so humid. Nice walkable downtown, and many nature and outdoor hiking areas so near downtown. Lots of ppl biking all over I remember. great outdoors, nature in very direction, including the pacific ocean that is much better to look at than the gulf coast. Plus you can take a few hours roadtrip in every direction and see good stuff, up to seattle, down to san francisco, east to, well idaho I really like trader joe's too, but portland has so many farmer's markets, I would rather shop those. bad thing, price of living is higher.
  11. reheated microwave food taste very different. Many of their cooked food like quesadillas, crab cakes and other pan fired foods become s little soggy after microwave. Seems like a waste after they put so much effort in making it look nice. It also defeats the purpose, might as well go to the frozen section for tv dinners.
  12. or late at night. I don't understand why their food to go cafe has such nice looking foods but its all cold, and you have to microwave it.
  13. Uk has many of the best, Couple of years ago, I saw one good one in new zealand. don't remember the name. The recent one I am impressed with would be the supermarket at the basement of taipei's 101 building. Don't know the name. Carrefour is one that comes up easily, like walmart but pretty good too. And the ones I love best are the ones in japan and taipei. Quality and cleanliness can easily beat the US ones. Maybe lose out in size, but cleanliness and quality, wow, fruits so polished and nicely packaged its unbelievable. Price is comparable. The pastry section of the above mentioned is much better than the ones we get here. And I think I am bias towards supermarkets that has built in food court. Not starbucks and donut shops or hotdogs, but full fledged food court with many many tiny stalls of awesome cooked food in the supermarket. But I guess you might also be right because I can find some of these supermarkets in parts of US like in hawaii where they do have japanese supermarkets like shirokiya, but still not on par with the ones in japan in terms of quality. I can agree with you on the bigger size of our supermarkets but not diversity of products. Unless you mean we have the diversity of different types of supermarkets like fiesta and like the ones in chinatown. We do have a lot of different types of supermarkets but if we compare each type with its overseas equivalents, like the ones in chinatown to the ones in asia, ours pale in comparison. But if we compare it the other way, our more varieties of above average supermarkets to theirs, then we are definitely awesome. Also, its hard to compare supermarket to supermarket, cause in different countries, they have different shopping habits, not everyone likes giant supermarkets, they prefer their food shopping among several smaller shops clustered in one area. I actually do enjoy those too. Of course we have that in the US too. Not in Houston though.
  14. I thought waterside estates, grandlakes is considered south Katy area already. And sienna plantation missouri city
  15. Not like you can't come back if you don't like it. I admire ppl who can get out of their comfort zone to live in (not just visit) places they have never been before. You will gain better perspectives having live in other cultures and places, or gain a better appreciation of when you have been. Some ppl will stand in one place forever (literally and figuratively) and think that that is all there is. In this thread, I say we are all a little bias about how good US is, but until you take up an offer like this, you can never really know whether it is better or worse outside. I say go for it.
  16. There is no one or few best thing. it is a combination of a lot of stuff. If we pinpoint just one or a few things, i can easily find better ones aboard. subdude mention supermarkets, i have seen better, fresher selections and better designed supermarkets aboard. I prefer farmer markets more anyway. someone mentioned freedom to do a lot of stuff. I think there is even more freedom in places like Amsterdam. And food, gosh, i can't even begin to say how much we are missing out on food. And if we filter in houston, we are missing out on even more. The thing is we have a combo of above average things to be happy about, some best, many average, but no where else can you get such a variety. In that sense, the US is like one giant supermarket, with lots of opportunities to be happy.

    Comedians

I didn't know dennis miller is republican. why would one judge how funny a comedian is by how they vote. Seems you are the only one doing it and trying to pass it off to someone else. Among those represented here, I think the two daves are the best imo.
  18. Its big but its far from having it all though.(I am greedy) Still, you do want to check it out
  19. kids + intolerance = dead USA Good thing there already is a amusement park for some of these folks who don't like their their kids to mingle with all these other different color, race, gender, sub species folks. Its called Jesus camp.
  20. The last part of the story was kinda of funny. In 2005, Southern Baptists ended an eight-year boycott of the Walt Disney Co. for violating "moral righteousness and traditional family values." They gave up huh.
  21. There are beautiful views of cars and parking lots.
  22. If one fits the requirements, is the perfect candidate for enlistment, likes to mouth off on supporting the war and criticized those that think otherwise, then duh, they should act on it
  23. You want facts to support the main reason for airports should be to move people, and not just for employment?? You don't want to employ people for the sake of employing them, you want productivity. Sounds like big government wants to promote their big government inefficiency to businesses.
  24. It is about the money but really about how one industry wants its money at the expense of another common sens'iscal' solution. And it really isn't the same service. we could all either, cycle, run, walk, take a hot air balloon, ride a horse between dallas and houston but it wouldn't be the same in terms of time, price and convenience. Some services are just better at moving people conveniently and cost effectively. Unfortunately, too much politics are always involved when deciding these matters.
  25. What he says makes perfect sense. And you just gave the reason why a better alternative is needed It could even do good for tourism and other industries, being able to visit all the major cities in texas so easily.
