  1. Builder's Square, a pre-Home Depot, Home Depot. Kinney shoe stores closed up around 1983 or 84. I remember everyone being in shock when BEST stores closed. Then Houston Jewelry became just that ,a jewery store, having to downsize from a department store. I remember how picked through the store was in the last days. Very sad. I thought it was hilarious when Two Pesos restaurants had to sell out to Taco Cabana over copyright enfringement. I have never quite gotten over Pipe Organ Pizza closing though, I would have loved to be able to take my daughter there. We had a Vaudeville Pizza in Baytown, that was a good joint also, both gone. Why couldn't i just have like half of Bill Gates' money. I'd build all the great old restaurants again for everyone to enjoy.
  2. There were two other rinks i went to in the 70's. I think one was called Rollertown way out westheimer by Hwy6. Believe me, back in the 70's that was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy out. Another really nice rink was on Pinemont,in NW Houston. I can't remember the cross street, but the building is still there.
  3. 2 things. Harlow's is reopening, and I believe the last Bert Wheeler's is on Beltway8 by I-10, if it's still open.
  4. Chelsea street pub was one of those places I'm pretty sure. I heard they made one helluva "SLINGAPOURSING" hic-up.
  5. "SINGLEPORSALINGS" I dare you to say that 5 times really fast. Ummm, I'm putting up SQUARE PAN PIZZA here. I just talked about it in another thread, but it just popped into my mind. One of the absolute BEST pizza places ever. It was on the NW side of town in a strip mall, on 290 and 34th I think.
  6. OK, I got one for you Martha, are you ready ? You better sit down for this one. SQUARE PAN PIZZA ! You have to remember that restaurant.
  7. well, I was in the third grade around '78 skated at tradewinds until about 1981 or '82. I am willing to bet we may have been there together at some point though.
  8. I seem to remember a Fat Ernie's was at Gessner and Harwin, it is now a blockbuster movies. Good burgers at Fat Ernie's
  9. Tradewinds is my old skating grounds. "ALL SKATE" and the next song will be "COUPLES ONLY".
  10. Over the years many many restaurants have come and gone in out fair city. Houston is known as "The Restaurant Capital of The World". Houston has more restaurants per capita than any other U.S. city. I started this Thread to let people list their all-time favorites, of the ones they miss the most. Does anyone remember The Rail Head and Victoria Station from back in the 70's? These were Rail Road themed restaurants, that's were really popular in the 70's and 80's. As a kid it was wonderful. At the Rail Head, they actually had a stage for music acts, surrounded by open rail cars with dining booths and tables. I used to frequent it alot when The Elliot Walter Band used to play there. My mother is really good friends with them. If you never heard of The Elliot Walter band, you have probably heard a song of their's though, it's called "Slime in the Ice Machine". Marvin Zindler's theme song.
  11. 57tbird is right, after consulting my references again, mom said,"oh yeah !, there were some indians on that roof, I forgot." she also went on to say how the fire looked like what 57tbird described. That place was apparently very popular. Hey,57tbird, which was delicious, the BEER or the Oysters, or Both !?
  12. You don't see the indian sitting crosslegged by the fire there ? Oh, wait, you thought they might be statues sitting on top, I gotcha. No, it was just a painting on top of the building. I've talked to several people who have actually been there, and that's what it looked like.
  13. It's kinda hard to keep it going when all the "anchor" stores can't stay in business. Mervyn's, Service merchandise, Monkey Ward's, Beall's,Foley's will be going bye-bye soon. It was a paradise back in the 80's though.
  14. That was one hell of a storm in '83, glad we both survived. Ames bought G.C. Murphy in 1985, which operated as TG&Y down here. When things got tight for Ames in '88 they sold off the TG&Y to McCrory. The location on Highway 146 was in dire need of renovation after that storm, and with the new San Jacinto Mall going in, I think they had some forsight that that part of Baytown was going to "die off", like it has.
  15. I forgot about the VENTURE stores also. Maybe that was the Kmart owned store, hmmmm, I need to do some more research on this, it is going to bother me all day now.
  16. Glad to hear Spanky's is still open, I don't venture on that side of town too often, unless I'm going to Kelley's country cookin. I'll have to disagree with the TG&Y thing though. TG&Y what a great 5 & 10 growing up. Which was bought out by the AMES stores, not AIM, 2 different deals. Had one in Baytown. I actually have a TG&Y light bulb that still works.
  17. Antonio's was on hilcroft, between richmond and westheimer. I think it is a dog groomer's now, or it may still be there.
  18. That was usually the whole point of Stuckey's, Have them out on the open road, so you could buy the ashtrays and t-shirts saying, whichever state you were about to leave, that mom and dad went there, and all you got was that crappy souvenir.
  19. I can't believe nobody claimed the "AIM" stores, by Kmart & Co. There was also Don McMillen Ford which is now Mac Haik. Apple Chevrolet at Hilcroft and 59. Jack Roach just recently sold out to Freeway Ford. No more Bonanzas around. Haven't seen any Sizzlers either. Albertson's have all gone the way of the Dodo bird also. Has anyone seen a Kettle restaurant lately. Shoney's has booked it out of town. Awesome breakfast buffets. No more Gulf gas stations. Spanky's pizza out on 610 south loop is gone. I think the sign is still there.
  20. The postcard there says it all, and it says fried chicken SAVAGE style. Those postcards were usually paintings over photographs, so that they would be pretty acurate. You are right Martha. Subdude's collection is astounding. My bet is that he used to frequent alot of "Stuckey's" roadside marts as a kid on family vacations. Any hints as to where all these come from, Sub.
  21. You're right They do have a new Off.Dir. but jeez louise, those guys are supposed to be professionals. I personally think I could hire UT's line right now to give up less than 7 sacks a game.
  22. Texans have to get an offensive line together. You can't have your QB getting sacked 7 times a game, and him stay healthy, he's gonna get hurt. In the same respect though, I think Dave holds on to the ball in the pocket wwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too long. Get rid of the pigskin son, find a target already.
  23. TBird, you hit it right on the ol'noggin. That is the place. I have an excellent reference, my mother. Memory like a steel trap, it's a little rusty, but once you jog her around a little bit, BOOM, she's got it.
