From Eater Houston yesterday: Construction permits filed for the space at 1818 Washington Avenue indicate that Fry will bring the Optimist, his “seaside fish camp” restaurant to the address. A sales tax permit filed with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts also confirms that location. The Houston outpost is an offshoot of the original Optimist in Atlanta, which Fry opened in 2012 to rave reviews, including a “best new restaurant” nod from Esquire that same year. https://houston.eater.com/2019/9/12/20862560/the-optimist-opening-washington-avenue-ford-fry

Chef Ford Fry's restaurant for 1818 Washington Ave in Houston will be The Optimist. It's going in the 7,240 SF space on the corner of Washington Ave and Silver St, directly across the street from Tacodeli. 1818 Washington Ave or East Washington is a new development under construction from Lovett Commercial. It's part of Sawyer Yards.

There is permitting for work on a parking lot for the connecting phase of Sawyer Yards at 1818 Washington Ave, Houston. The permit is for 1802 1/2 Center St. It is a flipping shame a parking garage wasn't their first choice. A parking structure is in the future, based on the last public renderings. Why not now instead of later when the phase is completed and operational?

Chef Paul Qui of Aqui is opening a smaller Filipino restaurant somewhere in the Sawyer Yards development in Houston. It could be the Sawyer Yards development with the silos or the expansion at 1818 Washington Ave. From Alison Cook on Twitter: Good news: Paul Qui & Jill Bartolome will be opening their new Filipino spot in Sawyer Yards in the new year. ...they've secured a space and are working on a menu. Much smaller & more focused than Aqui. Eager to see what they come up with. https://twitter.com/alisoncook/status/107705594646616883

EDENS sets timeline for Flower Child at Uptown Park in Houston: "We know Uptown Park serves as a dynamic destination for the best shopping and dining available in the city," said Tom Kiler, Managing Director at EDENS. "Every new retail shop and restaurant will enhance our current offering, while updating Uptown Park's aesthetic will create a fresh and better-connected environment for our current and future retail partners, locals and visitors, alike." Flower Child, an Arizona-based health food concept, is the first new restaurant with plans to open this summer. Details on renovations to Uptown Park The extensive redevelopment plans are focused on utilizing the abundant outdoor space to maximize areas for guests to unwind and socialize. The addition of trellises will span the property and provide shaded walkways that will connect the buildings, while outdoor conversation areas equipped with wireless internet will provide meeting and lounging spots. Common areas throughout the property will also be refreshed and enhanced with art to create a cohesive destination for the community to enjoy. "We are working diligently to infuse the diversity and personality found across Houston at Uptown Park, so visitors can expect collaborations with artists, events with local charities and experiences that highlight Houston's position as a global, first-class city," continued Kiler. While renovations are completed, all retailers, restaurants and services at Uptown Park will remain open, including Araya Chocolate, Belvedere, Bill Walker Clothier, Café Express, Carrie Ann, Caruggi's, Ceron Hair Studio, Crave Cupcakes, Drybar, E*Trade, Elizabeth Anthony, Embajadores Fine Cigars, Etoile Cuisine et Bar, Executive Baskets, Francesca's, Gittings Portraiture, High Gloss, Lewis Jewelers, Linda's Couture Alterations, LOFT, Longoria Collection, Lucho Boutique, M Penner, McCormick & Schmick's, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Songkran Thai Kitchen, Starbucks Coffee, The Tasting Room, Top Drawer Lingerie, Uptown Park Dental, Uptown Sushi and Utopia Plastic Surgery & Medspa. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/edens-announces-new-restaurant-and-vibrant-uptown-park-modernization-300648724.html

Okay. The placement of the sentence gave the impression it was about 1818 Washington Avenue because the author wrote in the paragraphs about 1818 Washington Avenue after writing on 1201 Oliver St. The author didn't give context the following sentence was about 1201 Oliver St.

Years ago I had heard this plot owned by same family as historic house in back, and was going to demolish that house for parking so a big Steak house restaurant could go in.

But, damn, I wish that ornate 1920's building at Main and Anita (Wheeler Watch Clinic, former home of the Venture-N) could survive the frenzy of development on Main St. It's pretty.

Davis Commercial really dropped the ball on this one. With the proposed lane changes for lower Westheimer and limited room for growth, this strip center will waste valuable space, with no vertical parking garage or vertical structure for businesses.

Houston Chronicle reports on the Uptown Park renovations in Uptown: Uptown Park, the Italianate shopping district abut a mile north of the Galleria, represented an innovation in retail development when it opened in 2000. The original developer called it a “lifestyle experience” where shoppers could stroll along hand-paved walkways between boutiques and cafes, taking in the architectural elements of old-world Europe: brightly colored window boxes, Italian urns and stone columns. But as today’s high-end shoppers seek a more authentic aesthetic, the newest owner of Uptown Park is giving the property a modern-day makeover. Construction fences surround the first batch of buildings being updated with cleaner, more modern storefronts. Over the next several months, the center will be getting more outdoor seating and fresh landscaping, offering shade and a feeling of shelter or inclusion that’s been shown to encourage shoppers to stick around longer. “Our goal is to get you to come there 3½ times a week and to stay there 90 minutes each time,” said managing director Tom Kiler of Edens, which took over the project in 2015. ...New retailers will open there this fall when much of the work will be completed. Ideally, Kiler said, the center will have new restaurants, more home and apparel retailers and perhaps a small market with freshly prepared foods. An entertainment concept with a music theme is also under consideration. Many existing tenants, Kiler said, do well and have strong followings, but because they are separated in individual buildings broken up by parking lots, they don’t benefit from the additional activity that can come from proximity. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/Uptown-Park-getting-modern-day-makeover-12773429.php More on the renovations in the forum here.

More on 1818 Washington Ave, part of the Sawyer Yards expansion. From PaperCity: There will be other tenants, depending on how it shakes out so far as square footage. Likely another couple of large restaurants and quite a bit of unique urban entertainment concepts,” Lovett Commercial’s Erin Dyer tells PaperCity. “A tenant we’re working with is an axe-throwing concept. It’s a fun experience we’re bringing to the campus. We’re able to do that because we have large buildings we’re able to repurpose. It’s hard to find that amount of space in urban Houston.” “These old buildings — you can’t really create them. It’s an experience in addition to going to a salon or fitness. It’s an experience that you really can’t recreate or mirror simply because of the unique feel to the area,” Clay Mealy of Lovett Commercial adds. https://www.papercitymag.com/real-estate/sawyer-yards-expansion-barbecue-brewery-artists-concerns

One of the restaurants opening in the Eden-owned Uptown Park in Houston is Flower Child (source: Facebook group and this construction bid posted last week). Eater Houston reported in October the Fox Restaurant Concepts Flower Child would open in Houston. No location was reported at the time the article was published. From Eater: Flower Child, a healthy restaurant chain that’s owned by the same company as North Italia, has plans to bring its hippie-approved wares to Houston. The fledgling chain from Fox Restaurant Concepts (North Italia, True Food Kitchen) announced that it was heading to Houston (among other cities) in a press release, but no specific plans for a location or opening timeline have been made public just yet. Here is where Flower Child will be located in Uptown Park. The address is 1101-06 Uptown Park Blvd, replacing clothing store BB1 Classic. https://edens.com/centers/TX/Houston/Uptown-Park

From Eater Houston on one of the tenants for 1818 Washington Ave. The Houston Chronicle hinted at Fry’s plans for a restaurant housed in a new development at 1818 Washington Avenue, describing the building’s first tenant as an “Atlanta-based celebrity chef” and the restaurant as a “New American seafood concept,” but didn’t name him. What really connects Fry to this project is a limited liability corporation formed in 2017 by Ford Fry Restaurants partner and chief financial officer Daniel Van Loh called “Washington Avenue Fish Camp,” though it’s unclear what exactly the restaurant would be named just yet. Van Loh was also responsible for registering the limited liability corporations formed to open Superica and La Lucha, Fry’s new-to-Houston restaurants that are set to open in the Heights in mid-September. If the “Fish Camp” project comes to fruition, Fry would then own four restaurants in Houston — Superica, La Lucha, State of Grace, and this as-yet-unnamed eatery. It’s possible that it could be an outpost of The Optimist, Fry’s Downtown Atlanta seafood restaurant that promises a “seaside fish camp experience” and dishes like whole-roasted trout, raw oysters, and lobster rolls. https://houston.eater.com/2018/9/4/17816932/ford-fry-new-seafood-restaurant-1818-washington-avenue
  21. Good catch @ljchou! So, this Lovett Commercial development will be named Coogs Crossing. It will also be a multifamily residential with retail pads lining a portion of it. Since this is expected to become student housing, I can see the need for a Chick-fil-A and 7-Eleven here. That Chick-fil-A will be more convenient than the one on South Wayside and the Gulf Freeway, plus the one on the campus of University of Houston. Also the density from the apartments, UH and the surrounding neighborhoods can support a Chick-fil-A. Outside of Texas Southern University and University of Houston, I don't think there's a freestanding Chick-fil-A in Third Ward. With this one planned right on the Third Ward boundary, this will serve the Third Ward and Riverside Terrance communities and those residing in the East End closer to downtown. From Houston Chronicle: A second phase of the expansion will include a new two-story building at 1818 Washington Street. The 50,000-square-foot property will have a courtyard and rooftop terraces overlooking the downtown skyline. The building's first tenant will be a New American seafood concept from an Atlanta-based celebrity chef.
