  1. BJ's - (Sugar Land) - World famous for their micro-brew & pizza. Both tasted funny. The crust on our Chicago style deep-dish had a funky metallic taste, or that of dish soap - still not sture. The micro-brews lacked any sort of refined flavor as well. Oh, I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I've been to BJ's many times, and have never been disappointed. For a chain (I think there is one in Friendswood area as well), I think they do a good job. Good salads, good sandwiches, and good pizza. Although, I am not a micro brew kinda gal, so I can't judge that!
  2. I agree with the review of the pizza at Double Dave's. But, the thing to get there are their pizza rolls. Handy little things that go good with cold beer.
  3. Well, I'm sure that they were somewhat restricted by construction costs. The new building and renovations to the old one are going to run around $8 million. So far, they have raised about 1/2 of that. I do have to admit that I am dissappointed that the couryard will be significantly reduced. But, in the end, they will have a new facility, with a lot of new amenities to educate Catholic girls on Houston. In case y'all didn't know, Incarnate Word is the oldest Catholic school in Houston, founded in 1873.
  4. The new building will be built on the exisiting courtyard area of the school property. I've been trying to figure out how to paste a rendition of the building, but it's in a pdf format, and this site won't take it! The new building will mirror the existing "new" construction that was builit in '79-80. The original convent that faces Capitol St. will remain. Included in the new building will be a fine arts center, new auditorium, new science and computer labs, etc. If you would like to see a rendition, go to www.incarnateword.org and click on the "Groundbreaking Ceremony" .
  5. There is a new 2 story building going up on the south side of 610 at Link Road. Anyone know what it is?
  6. I'm sorry I ruined your Black Panter party. Actually, I'm appalled at what this woman has done and is doing to TSU. Her "over the top" expenditures have given the university an even worse reputation than it already has. How this was allowed to go on for 7 years is beyond me.
  7. I accompanied Mr. Cabanaboy to the bouts at the Arabian Shrine Temple on Braeswood. We were front row, on the floor, and were part of the show at one point. We had a good time. We shall return.
  8. If I remember correctly, I think Native Houstonian won them all. What a lucky gal! I'll send them to you shortly!
  9. Wait, I would like to edit this just a bit. You drink copious amounts of Coors Light.
  10. I'm so glad that we had such a good turnout! We will definitely do this again, perhaps sometime in June. There were no fist-a-cuffs and everyone behaved themselves quite well. There were free hats distributed, compliments of LWood, and free t-shirts promised by Editor. Now we'll see if Editor is really a stand up guy! I think a Saturday afternoon in Midtown would be a great idea for the next one. What is Mo Mong?
  11. Um, we are having a mixer, not a wrestling match. We will have none of this tonight, unless Redscare has too much tequila. However, we will take that into consideration for the next HAIF mixer.
  12. 2112, It's still happening! The official time is 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm, but there may be some stragglers there at 9:00. Hope you can make it!
  13. There is a Yale Pharmacy on Yale, just north of 20th st. However, I don't think they sell any kind of pharmaceuticals in there anymore. But, they do serve a good breakfast!
  14. Ok, all of you HAIFers, tonight's the night! Join us at Berryhills in the Heights for a few cold ones. To paraphrase Mel Brooks, "DON'T BE STUPID, BE A SMARTIE, COME AND JOIN THE HAIF
  15. Since many of us will be practically across the street tomorrow night at the OFFICIAL HAIF
  16. Come one, come all, come with koozie for beer.
  17. Are you sure you were at the right place? I renewed my drivers license at the Dacoma DPS office about 30 DAYS ago.
  18. Hopefully, this will be the first of many haif2 mixers. Maybe you can make the next one!
  19. Meet other HAIF members at Berryhills in the Heights
  20. Well, I think there was an attempt to set up a mixer last fall, but I don't know if anyone was able to attend. This is my first attempt, so we'll see how it goes!
  21. To all H.A.I.F. members - It's official! The H.A.I.F. Mixer has been set for next Friday, April 28th at Berryhill in the Heights located at 702 East 11th st. In case you get lost, their phone number is 713-225-2252. The festivities will begin at 6:00 pm, and I hope not be thrown out until at least 8:00 pm. I have arranged for a couple of tables to be put together and I will decorate with official H.A.I.F. balloons. If you've never been to Berryhill's, they have a full bar and good food. If anyone has any questions, please email me. I hope that this is just the first of many events that we can put together for H.A.I.F.! Looking forward to meeting you!
  22. Cletus' theme song: Some folk'll never eat a skunk But then again, some folk'll Like Cle-tus the slack-jawed yokel Perhaps we could change it to go along with the BHOMS: Some folk'll never build a head But then again, some folk'll Like Adickes the artistic yokel
  23. On the subject of Bilingual education, I am completely opposed to it. Kids' minds are incredible sponges that will soak in whatever you throw at them. Take a student that is 7 or 8 years old that speaks only Spanish and put them in an English only class, and they will be speaking English in a few months. The best example that I am personally acquainted with are some friends of mine from the East end. Their parents came to this country in the early 70's. The mother speaks broken English, the father, very little English. Only Spanish was spoken at home - the kids didn't speak any English until they were thrust into English only classes in school and whatever they picked up from Sesame Street. Today, one is a graduate of Princeton, the other is a bank manager, and the third is a school administrator. None of them were held back by not being in bilingual classes - instead they excelled. IMO, today, we are doing kids a disservice to put them into Bilingual classes in school. They will learn Spanish at home - teach them English in school.
