TJ, you're linking to freerepublic to make your point?

End of debate. RedScare out.

Now you are scared of real reporting, I know, I know, truth hurts. All reports came from The Weekly Standard Red. I could have just as easily pulled from there or C-Span. :P:lol:

This board is too funny.

LadyMcBlue is calling people douchebags. That's a classic.

Folks who don't agree with Sheila Jackson-Lee's politics are calling her ignorant. I wonder how many folks on here graduated from Yale and followed that up with a JD from UVa three years later?

As for some things Sheila Jackson-Lee has done for HOUSTON...

1) Supported stronger gun control and penalties for parents who allowed their kids access to their guns

2) As a city councilor, fought for the summer extended hours program to keep city parks, pools, rec centers, libraries, etc... open later to keep kids off the streets

3) A tireless supporter of minority, immigrant, and gay rights. Also a staunch supporter of reproductive rights. These are all issues that matter to residents of the 18th.

4) A major child advocate

5) Strong supporter for a national health care plan

6) Staunch supporter of public housing and transportation

7) Uses her poli sci background at Yale to fight the current administrations constant threats to our system of checks and balances

Of course, I suppose her detractors will think all of the above silly and argue that her constituents are too stupid to know better. AND, in the next breath, they will wonder why African-Americans still use the so-called race card.

I don't see you spouting off this rhetoric defending Bush now do you ? Remember, he's a Yaley also.

.........with her assinign remarks like, " I came to congress as a slave, and I demand the right to vote." You bet I wonder where she gets off trying to pull that crap. Kinkaid, can you show me one instance in the past 3 years where she wasn't trying to hog camera time over some B.S. "racist" issue ?

The only time I can think of is when she wanted to re-open the issue over the $80 billion spent on Iraq. C'mon, 2 years after the fact she has an epithany, that maybe it was asking for too much money. Whatever.

Don't kid yourself, City Council was a stepping stone for her to go to Congress, where she can be the self proclaimed "Queen" that she thinks she deserves to be.

With Ms. Jackson, it is all about her. Just because someone has degrees doesn't mean that they are smart. During one of her visits to the space center during the Mars Rover landing, she asked the engineers whether the Mars Rover cameras could find the place where the astronauts landed. Guess Mars and the Moon both started with an M so she got confused. :D

Degrees do not equal intelligence. Having the degree (s) without the substance behind it equals an "educated dummy"

yeah, george bush is a prime example of that. i think he's got an ivy league education too...

As an aside, Bush wouldn't have gotten into Yale if it were not for his Poppy and I suspect SJL being black didn't hurt her cause either.

[Pssstttt...TJ...just a little friendly advice: avoid publications that prominently cover the quotes of Ann Coulter:] ;)

My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.

Ann Coulter

Most people's regrets are that he blew up his truck bomb beside the windows of the daycare center in the Federal Building. We know we're better than that.

In any event, I'm pretty much with you on sjl.

I never said that there wasn't ANY whackjobs in the Republican Tree. I just wish we could shake her out of it sometimes. Loose cannons take the heat off sometimes though. She is kinda like having our own Rev. Shaprton.

Do you people read what you post?

Maybe the reason so many African-Americans play the "race card" is because so many people are still racists?

There are now references in the last few posts that allude to affirmative action being the reason Sheila Jackson Lee got into Yale and/or Virginia Law. Does anyone on this board know her high school grades? Her SAT scores? Her LSAT scores? Unlike the President's, I have never seen her information published.

It's funny that people just assume she got in cause she's black. Does that mean all black folks at all elite colleges are only there because of their skin color?

That smacks of racism.

As for her being a camera hog or spotlight crazy, who cares? What politician doesn't try to get press time? It's the little ____ like this that really doesn't matter.

I don't know Mayor White's SAT scores either. I would imagine that because neither Lee or White ran for president, not necessarily because of race. I'm not even sure if alfirmative action was a factor or not as to how she got into Yale, but in my opinion, that, plus the President's SATs, are merely trivial. I heard President Bush's SATs weren't too high, but that doesn't play a role as to who wins. Just something to talk about around the coffee table...

It's funny that people just assume she got in cause she's black. Does that mean all black folks at all elite colleges are only there because of their skin color?

That's been the debate of alfirmative action's existance for quite a while now. It's all about keeping the playing field even for all races. It's a double-edged sword in my opinion. Alfirmative action exists: more minorities are given an opportunity at success, but more whites with the same or better qualities are not able to take those same jobs. Alfirmative action doesn't exist: Regardless of race, the person with the best qualities gets the opportunity, but at the same time, minorities have less a chance to move up because there's more people to compete with. Very sensitive subject to some, and makes a great debate subject.

As for her being a camera hog or spotlight crazy, who cares? What politician doesn't try to get press time? It's the little ____ like this that really doesn't matter.

I don't know why, but when I read those three lines, I was thinking of Lloyd Benson, whose funeral I watched earlier today, how much I'll miss him as a leader, and how much I wish there were more lovable people like him in Congress today. He always wanted to get the job done first, and I don't ever remember him trying to jump in front of a camera in order to get his points across. He'd speak with his pen. He's a Texas legend because it was all about the issue, not about his political party. Kudos to his legacy. A little off topic.

Thanks for making me think, KinkaidAlum :)

And on a real tangent, the hardest thing about an IVY League school is getting in.

There's been a slight scandal at Harvard the last few years about the numbers of graduates who finish with honors. It was close to 75%. Several Ivies have reputations for just passing folks through (undergrad level courses).

Kinkaid, I am sorry, but I put Shelia Lee right up there with that Pastor Dr. Bridgett woman who was asking for SPECIFIC birthday gifts or don't bother showin' up, that we all talked about a few months back. The woman is a blackeye to our fair city.

:P Dude, c'mon! At least Jackson Lee tries to involve herself with local issues that could influence Houston. What has Dr. Bridgett done to deserve street credit? When has Lee asked for gifts like Bridgett have? I'm trying to see where you see anything in common between the two.

Before I say this, it needs to be for the record that I'm not endorsing this person as mayor; I'm asking a stupid question. Joel Olsteen. The man's got his face on billboards all over the world (which I've seen first hand), has his name in bold on the front of the former home of the Houston Rockets, and is leader of the biggest congregation in North America. If he were to turn around and run for mayor of Houston, would he have enough political and public support to win the office? I'm curious how powerful and popular he is in Houston, 'cause when I saw that "Joel Olsteen Ministries" sign on the side of Lakewood Center, I was in shock...

agreed... i am not seeing the similarities between sjl and mrs. hilliard except they are both black. besides that, no real comparison.

anyhoo ...

i think olsteen would make a fine mayor. from what i've seen he has:

  1. cross generation, multi-ethnic/racial/political support
  2. he is smart
  3. he is very well financed
  4. he is credible

on second thought, he prolly shouldn't sully his name with politics...

LOL...Joel can run Houston like his wife can be in charge of the flight attendants for Continental Airlines.

Well, I go to Lakewood and I think that Pastor Osteen would make a great mayor. However, I don't see him jumping into the menial fray of politics.

Maybe Charles Barkley should move here and become mayor

Or, more seriously, depending on the Congressional race, Nick Lampson could come here and be mayor. I can tell you who won't be mayor though--ever--Judge Eckels. Think about it--he has probably the sweetest gig in the state. He is the top administrator for the third (soon to be fourth) largest county in the US, he is the chair of top committees like the Transportation Policy Council (for all 8 counties in the HGAC TMA), he is the head of the Emergency Management agency for the county, and he has 4 year terms, not 2. As a matter of fact NO ONE is running against him this time! Throw in the fact that the county has a good deal of weight but (due to Texas law) relatively little responsibility, and you have a job work keeping. Eckels didn't bother proceeding with trying to replace DeLay--why? Harris County Judge is a better job, IMO.

You completely missed the boat there DJ. But, if you want me to try and liken her to Dr.Bridgette, well, Shelia expects to be bumped to FIRST CLASS when she travels back and forth to D.C. and Lord help you if you forgot to get the right meal for her. She was asked by Continental to start flying Delta. She gets chauffered on yours and my dime from her office to Capitol Hill which is a mere 200 paces, it is ONE friggin block ! So, the analogy of Dr.Bridgette and Shelia Lee is in the reverse to what you were thinking DJ. B)

.....and Dj, do you really think Olsteen's wife is gonna let him take a paycut ? C'mon bro.

This sounds like another banner headline from freerepublic.com....or is your source a friend of a friend who knows a flight attendant who is bangin' a pilot who's wife is in the PR department?

What's up with your storytelling, lately, TJ? Continental would NEVER jeopardize their relationship with ANY politician by kicking them off of their planes. Even Victoria Osteen was not banned from Continental. She was only escorted off of that one flight for some questionable antics that day.
