Hurricane Ike

Trae

Recommended Posts

Conditions in downtown Galveston are deteriorating, but not to such a point that my parents are panicking. Water is up to the lock on the first-floor door (they live on the third floor), about four feet above the building's foundation. Wind is gusty, but they are operating on candle light, and the flame is straight up, not wobbly or flickering at all...so there are no drafts. The building envelope is very much intact.

The eye will strike mid- or lower-Galveston at about 3AM. High tide is at about 4AM. I'll update you all as I receive further news. But so far, so good.

Called my grandma, no answer. Maybe they evacuated.

If you were calling a land line they may have all moved to lower floors or some other central area in the building. I live 5 blocks from there and so far there hasn't been anything that would threaten that building, so I'm sure she's fine.

That must be your agitated baby pic, huh dad? Not exactly panicked, but in the spirit, and all.

I'd hate to be doing this with babies or children, period. That's why my mom's so mean, she's a gulf coaster. Carla and all the storms before that.

In Rice Military area (off Washington & Shepherd)... it's windy here and raining a little, but we still have power and everything. We boarded up the 4th floor windows of our townhome, and are planning on riding things out from the 1st floor if things get bad.

My parents are up here from Clear Lake - anyone know anything about Brookforest area?? We all stayed there during Alicia and it was ok, but I'm a little worried about my childhood house!! It's at 22 feet elevation... hopefully the surge won't affect it.

Yeah that was her hurricane panicky face...but I had to switch back to goofy (might have to refresh, I did)

Getting close to bed time. I wonder if I can sleep through this. I bet I can.

There's a huge break in the eyewall right in front of Galveston. I think the convection will make it back around soon, but that would've made for a slightly softer landfall. Looks like the center will be slightly left of I45, but most of the area will be under the eye.

I was in Brookforest for Alicia, too. That was a little scary.

A little wind in The Westbury. No rain. Power flicked once a while back. Steady ever since. The Hennesy supply is holding up so I haven't had to touch the lesser brands. The future Mrs. Bag is a little wigged, but we're passing the time watching Frisky Dingo and real estate porn. The love child is safe in The Heights. We got to swim earlier and explore the meaning of the saying "may hay while the sun shines". Her tooth fell out, so the tooth fairy may have to brave 100+ mph winds.

I've lost power about 5 times, but have gotten it back within a minute each time. I see the highest gusts we've gotten in Montrose have been 40-50 mph. No way power will last much longer

When are we supposed to get the highest winds tonight for inside the loop?

Really regretting partying until 4 a.m. last night...too wired to sleep tonight, though, as I'm sure most of us are

Anyone in the downtown Houston area? How is it? Still ok in Spring...heavy wind

Just over a mile away from DT on Dallas & Montrose. I still have power, though not too long ago they showed on channel 13 that some folks on the south side of West Gray near the River Oaks shopping center were in the dark. The other building to our complex is covering the view of downtown, so I can't see if any of the buildings have any light. The wind has been getting stronger though by the minute....yikes.

I spoke to a lady who's been living at this complex since it first opened in 2001 and noted that certain buildings in our complex got flooded during Allison. Luckily I'm on the third floor! Except that's not of any comfort when some a-hole on the fourth floor in the adjacent building still has his bbq pit, patio chairs, coolers, bikes out on his balcony (and lawd knows what else ---- machetes? saws? chinese throwing ninja stars?)

They just said there's flooding east of Bay Area Blvd. So, Brookforest may be flooding soon, but not yet.

right now hidethewinds data is a little old, its still based on 7PM data. Eric Berger at the Chron (who has been fantastic through this) mentioned that the estimates on that site might be a little high since they are not factoring in weakening as the storm moves inland.

Still, hurricane force winds (nearly cat 2) in every single zip code!
