It's the stucco structure at the corner of Winbern and Milam streets, and appears to have been built as a small apartment building. It has some interesting details, such as the name "Carlton" spelled out in small tiles near the eaves, wood-framed ornate windows and an entryway framed by tiles in various patterns (among which is a swastika!) The tiles also extend along the roofline on the west side of the building. It appears to be in the Arts and Crafts style, although there may be a more precise term. I'm guessing 1910-ish....The Carlton Apartments at 804 Wilbern Ave. were built in 1918/ Alfred C. Finn, architect...info. courtesy of Houston an architectural guide, Hou. Chapter AIA - P. Papademetriou, listed under South Main section. Doesn't give any extra info. on the bldg. , who Carlton was. Note: Alfred C. Finn was also the architect for the Sam Houston Coliseum/ Music Hall in 1937. I've seen his name associated with many bldgs.The second AIA Architectural Guide (S. Fox) mentions on p.93 that the Sheridan Apts. at 2603 Milam St. were built in 1922, says these types of apts. were common in this area "along the trolley car lines" that fed into downtown. Highrise Tower Posted October 21, 2023 Share Posted October 21, 2023 Nice!! I found a rare multifamily building by none other than Alfred C. Finn! From the newspaper The Houston Post dated March 10, 1918. Houston Will Have Another Up-to-Date Apartment House The Carlton apartments, now under construction at Milam and McGregor, and owned by Mrs. Ida M. Wortham. The building will contain four apartments, two of them four-room and two five-room suites. In addition each apartment will be provided with sleeping porches, pass pantries, kitchen porch and all modern conveniences that go toward comfort, The bathrooms will be laid with tile and oak floors will be laid throughout. The building will have stucco exterior, embellished with tile friere and inserts and is expected to be completed by April 15. The design is by Alfred C. Finn and J.H.
