No such thing as too much Mexican food, but this is specifically described as Tex-Mex. That could go either way. Could be a good sign they're going for something specific and local... or could be a very bad sign.

Or could just be decent Tex-Mex I suppose, which... seems fine? "So much more than" a Mexican restaurant kinda gets my hackles up.

Lots of restaurants in town categorized their establishments as Mexican restaurants, when they're more Tex-Mex. But Houston has loads of Tex-Mex restaurants as it does Mexican and those serving specific regional Mexican fare.

As for Verde (or Verde Garden), the Tex-Mex restaurant opening later this year at Harlow District and alluded to in the articles this week, I think it will be slightly different than most area Tex-Mex joints. With this being a dining concept from the Kirby Group, it's likely Verde won't be a typical Tex-Mex eatery. I suspect there will be contemporary spins on dishes and cocktails. I don't think it will be a carbon copy of Candente or Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina, but it will hold its own.

We live in the neighborhood. This is great! When I heard this parcel was for sale I assumed it would become more apartments (to go along with the other 6+ buildings going up or newly completed in the area). "Finch" is also opening up in the old Tony Mandolas and I have seen activity at the old Emmaline building (maybe they are re-opening or new concept?) McElroys is also building a new kitchen so lots of new food options coming to area.

 

If we could just bull doze the old "Audio/Video Plus" eyesore at Waugh & W Clay...

The restaurant is the Finch, a concept from Dallas-based Milkshake Concepts. I don't know if it's still planned there or not. The last update about 1212 Waugh pertained to Gatsby's Prime Seafood moving in. There is a thread about it if you want to post more about it:

It's a completely different restaurant by a new-ish Houston-based hospitality group. Like the 1212 Waugh property, there's a thread for the 3210 W Dallas property. That thread has news of the new restaurant shared back in January.

As noted in the above post,  TKG Holdings (the Kirby Group) and Oxberry Group established the entity Harlow District LLC in May. The same month, trademark filings connected to the entity were registered. Those filings were Harlow District and Harlow District at West Dallas.

Description for Harlow District at West Dallas' trademark registration states the following:


Harlow District at West Dallas trademark registration is intended to cover the categories of leasing of real estate in the nature of apartments, office space, bar and restaurants, and shopping center space; Leasing of real estate; Real estate management; Real estate management of commercial, residential, mixed-used, and shopping center properties; Real estate management services relating to shopping centers; Shopping center services, namely, rental of shopping center space.


So, Harlow District at West Dallas (or may be named Harlow District) is a partnership venture between Oxberry Group and TKG Holdings. It is possible this could be a collection of buildings for retail businesses. Another possibility is a mixed-use development that could include offices and/or residential, plus retail.

A TABC notice confirms the post above regarding Verde (or Verde Garden) taking over the former Grappino's Di Nino at 11011 La Rue St, Suite C.

Verde will be a Tex-Mex restaurant or bar.

TKG Holdings registered the entity Vincent HTX LLC in May, listing local restaurateur Yun Cheng as manager. Sale listings for the property at 1216 W Clay St. This was the former home for the Houston Alumni & Youth Center (aka HAY Center). In recent years, the  American Legion Post also occupied the property.

As reported earlier this month, Oxberry Group and TKG Capital Partners (the Kirby Group) purchased the property for their forthcoming mixed-use development Harlow District.

Bold (or Bold Original Coffee Artistry) will be located at 1216 W Clay St, Suite 300. It's on the corner of West Clay Street and Eberhard Street. 1216 West Clay was previously home to the Houston Alumni & Youth Center (aka HAY Center) and American Legion Post. The suite number seems to indicate other businesses will operate at 1216 W Clay. 

Bold is one of six food and beverage concepts planned for Harlow District. The location of the coffee shop is highlighted in the site plan below. Other known restaurants opening here are Verde, Katami, and Nino's.

Harlow District is the mixed-use development at 2800 W Dallas St.

Correction: The coffee shop opening in Harlow District is going by the name BOCA instead of Bold Original Coffee Artistry.

Last Friday, BOCA announced its forthcoming concept on Instagram. In addition to coffee beverages, this may also be a cafe with breakfast offerings and wine.

BOCA's address is 1216 W Clay St, Suite 300.

There will be other businesses operating at 1216 West Clay, the former site of the HAY Center and American Legion Post.

In addition to coffee shop BOCA in suite 300, a bar or something similar is planned for suite 200.

Sala (Sala Social House) is in the works for 1216 W Clay St, Suite 200 at Harlow District.  I think this is from the same group behind BOCA.

Bad wreck early Sunday morning on W. Dallas St. at La Rue St. 

ABC13 story.....

"HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police are searching for the people who fled from the scene of a crash that killed two people and sent two others to the hospital Sunday morning.

The Houston Police Department said they received the call at about 3 a.m. near West Dallas Street and La Rue Street. Preliminary information indicates a gray Jeep and blue Maserati were speeding on West Dallas, but investigators are unsure if the two cars were racing each other.

They said the Jeep hit the left side of the Maserati, causing it to lose control. The Maserati veered off the road, struck a pole, and hit the patio and fence of the old Nino's Restaurant, near Buffalo Bayou Park."

An Architectural Barriers Project filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations for Sala (Sala Social House).

Sala is one of several food and beverage concepts opening at Harlow District. This will be located at 1216 W Clay St, Suite 200 (1216 West Clay St, Suite 200). It's the former site of the HAY Center and American Legion Post. I think this may be a lounge or have a lounge component to it (could possibly turn into a lounge at night).

BOCA (Bold Original Coffee Artistry) will be in the same building but in suite 300 (1216 West Clay, Ste 300). Both BOCA and Sala are new concepts from two brothers of RTB Event Group.

According to the filing work on the 6,060 sf unit will begin in December. However, crews began work on the space and BOCA's space this summer (photos posted on page 1). Estimated completion is February 2023. It's possible Sala could open early or mid-spring 2023.
