5.3 Acre church campus near downtown Houston will be converted to a 290 Unit Workforce Housing development in Partnership with the Houston Housing Authority.  The original stone sanctuary was built in 1947.

Goodness, the interest rate on the loan for what I’m guessing is the purchase of this property is an eye watering 11.99%:

Edit: I think financing a purchase with a hard money loan does not bode well for this development. This company (Deccan Development) already lost the land for the Chelsea to foreclosure back in 2021, even though they still list the project on their website.

Some info I found about the architect of the original church, I don't see it mentioned here but he seemed to specialize in churches.

This Plat sign was across the street in a big empty concrete lot. I wonder if the church will move here if the MOD Project goes thru.

Fifth Ward’s historic Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church — and its iconic dome seen from the highway where I-10 crosses U.S. 59 — may soon be demolished to make way for an apartment community.

The Houston Housing Authority has taken ownership of the grounds, public records show. In April, it solicited bids to demolish and remediate the site, which an environmental study has found to contain asbestos and lead. The Houston Housing Authority’s ownership arrangement will make any future development tax-exempt, but the authority said the exact number of units and their affordability still need to be determined.

“We are currently evaluating a number of options, considering community needs, to determine how best to develop the property,” said the authority’s chief executive, David Northern Sr., in an emailed response. Chris Senegal of Invictus Development Group, which originally purchased the property from the church before selling it to the authority, said the HHA planned to use the development to replace nearby public housing units that will be torn down as part of the I-45 expansion.
