Well, there's 2 "reputable" sources of information: The Dan Patrick inspired Republican ad site called The Lone Star Times and the predictably self-centered Michelle "In the end, leaving and staying boiled down to this difference: my Uptown apartment is fine, and all of their houses are gone" Krupa from the Times-Picayune.

Praise GOD her Uptown apartment is fine.

I am relieved.

No.

Really.

I am.

When I read the statements about Houston having no soul, I pointed out to Montrose, the performing arts venues, the performing arts high school, and the arthouse film centers.

In addition, I pointed out that Houston has better infrastructure, business, politics, and public schools (I am currently in Houston ISD). Those things matter too.

If Houston is so damn bad why the hell is it gaining people while New Orleans has been losing people even before Katrina. At least the Houston isn't below sea level and a depressing place to live. I would pick H-town over the murder capital USA (New Orleans) any day. That place is just some where to go and do what ever (like get drunk in the street, get laid by any slut, trash the streets etc) It's know place to live unless you're......... Never mind I won't say. We all know which city is better, they just want to bash Houston because there down. and PS: I don't care anything about the future of that city, never did never will.

Citykid, I am starting to lose respect. Let's just say you are not familiar with New Orleans, and you are stereotyping just like you hate people stereotyping the city 100 miles southeast of you. I am sure they are not bashing Houston becasue they are down, but New Orleans is one of the most culturally rich cities in the country and I personally prefer it more than Houston. What other cities can claim so many things part of their culture such as New Orleans? The whole voo doo culture, jazz funerals where there are huge parties in the streets filled with dancing under umbrellas, creolization which is the mixing of black and french, cajun food, zydeco which traces back to the whole creolization which is the mix of black and white sounds, the french architectural vernacular, the grown ups who go out in the city for Halloween, mardi gras, jazz, and so much more. Plus they have some of the most walkable and beauitful neighborhoods in this region. Yes, there are some hoods with bad urban decay, but they are one of the most preseved cities in the country. Now when you come to a city like Houston, wouldn't you miss all of that? I sure as hell would. New Orleans is a taste of Europe in the south and there is only one New Orleans.

One thing that confuses me though. They complain about the lack of soul or culture and how it was so much better back home, but bash Galveston for "stealing" their show.

The "they" you refer to is just one, bitter, frustrated reporter with a vehicle [The TP] to vent from. Your trashing of an entire city and it's culture based on her opinions is beyond immature.

The next time you have the impulse to speak out, put your brain in gear and THINK about it. That way you will avoid coming off as just another assinine poster. Again.

<_<

Oh yeah-I forgot: what Western said. Re-read the previous post.

Once agian, if its such a good place, why where many of there cities residence moving to Places like Houston and Atlanta before Katrina happened. I didn't mean to go all crazy on the city but they had no reason to talk bad about Houston, a city that has helped them. I will admit that they have there history, and it could be an ok place to visit, but as for wanting to live there, I don't think so. I would much, much rather live in Houston any day. Houston has had a much brighter future than New Orleans even before Katrina and it will keep that brighter future.

I understand your frustration. When the writer talks about how New Orleans residents "bemoan" Houston, that is outright rude.... and untrue. I don't know who she is hanging around with, but it my experience that our neighbors and friends from New Orleans are thankful for Houston - and frankly I've always been thankful that New Orleans was our unique, fun, and quirky neighbor to the east. She (the writer) is clearly aloof and arrogant... sure, I understand her sentiments about New Orleans, but she could have written that article without slamming our town. It is downright tacky to slam a city that has come to the aid of hundreds of thousands of people - whether you like it or not.

OK. New Orlean's economy is not at the top of its game. Is that why you pretty much hate the city and don't care anything about the future of that city, never did never will? Just because they move to ATL or Houston does not mean they did not like Ne Orleans. Pretty much you like your cities with strip malls, the neighborhood Starbucks you like to drive to, big box retailers, stucco townhomes that replace old charming walkable neighborhoods, and super cool freeways that part through those "ugly" Third Ward homes. From reading your post, the stuff that you want for Houston, New Orleans already has, its just not in the brand new sterile format that you would rather see Houston as. Sorry, but for an urban enthusiast, New Orleans offers a hell of a lot more quality of life than Houston. Get out of Bryan man. I'm sure you did not face any of those problems in New Orleans that you mentioned unless you were looking for them.

Here was an e-mail I sent to the editor:

"I disagree with your statements about Houston not having any character.

Houston has character in its heart. Houston's character is its artistic prowress with Montrose, the performings arts venues, its arthouse film centers, and the performing arts high school. Also Houston has a "down to earth" reputation; it's a city but at the same time it is also a friendly place. In addition, as many Louisiana residents have decided not to go back, Houston may absorb some of New Orleans' Cajun culture (along with Dallas, San Antonio, and other Texas cities that took New Orleans residents).

Also Houston is starting to become pedestrian with the brand new light rail lines.

New Orleans is a nice city to visit (the beignets and the jazz), but I would rather live full time in Houston. Houston, while not as well-known as New Orleans, has better infrastructure, better politicians, and better public schools. In addition the jobs are in Houston."

As usual, you ignore previous replies to your posts in this forum-whether it be your references to the elusive "they" in this thread or your lying to the woman about casinos in Dallas and Texas alcohol sales on Sundays in a previous thread.

Either you stop drinking the water in CS or quit posting in this forum.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Don't get out of Bryan!!! Please don't come here!!! PLEASE!!!!!

I suppose I don't have a problem if New Orleans evacuees dislike Houston. Most of them probably didn't have much of a choice on where they ended up. But do they have to be so vocal about it? It's like when you were a kid and you had to go to your Aunt's house. Maybe you didn't want to be there, but you had enough sense not to say it.

I never cared about New Orleans anyway. Citykid is right. It was somewhere to go, and have fun, then bring your butt back home. I will never, I mean never live in New Orleans. I don't care they fix it up like Hawaii, I wouldn't give 2 cents.

Houston help y'all, and return the favor by talking down on us. Take y'all murdering asses back home, and continue murdering each other there, not here. I can't beleive this. New Orleans talking down on Houston, like they the cream of the crop. Hell, half of the population was damn poor, living in ghettos. Half of the females had to sell their bodies just to make rent, or to get food.

I wish they take their asses back home. I'm for real, cause Houston's homocide rate went up, as y'all know.

Yikes. Once again, the elusive "they".

Bless your heart but PLEASE, once and for all, take your incomprehensible sentences, bad grammer and total lack of compassion to a place far away from here. Pick up citykid on the way.

Pretty please.

I think Citykid is mad, but I think he has a good reason why. I can't see how ANYONE, especially anyone who had to put up with the mess left by Katrina and had to move as a result, can complain about a city like Houston after all the hard work, volunteer efforts, and money our city put in to try to help a bad situation not get worse.

Yes, I think New Orleans (as is Galveston now) was an accident waiting to happen due to to location and lack of funding against mother nature put together. But for New Orleans, the disaster happened, the country is facing it, and New Orleans will in the near future be back and better than before. But no one has the right to disrespect Houston in the process. H-town has earned the right to be respected at the least, and those article reflect otherwise.

Imagine how much New Orleans residents would have complained if we did nothing instead...

Oh, lighten up! One chick says she misses NO because Houston is all sprawly and not like NO. Well, godammit, we ARE all sprawaly and spread out and not like NO. Get over it. If Houston was 300 years old, it would look like NO too. But, we're not, so we don't.

These people just got flooded out of their city, many for good, and you people, especially citykid, want them to act like they just came to your house for dinnner. Well, f*ck off. I wonder how you would talk if you just had your life turned upside down. Just because it's been 3 months since you saw that city full of water, doesn't mean they've gotten over it.

I have to say, if I was a NO resident, I'd think Houston was a bit tough to get around, too. Like WesternGulf said, do you want a compact walkable city or not? Don't delicate flower that those who came from one lament that Houston isn't one yet.

:o Well that was disgusting! Did Krups meet you during her visit? That might explain her feelings toward Houston. Please clean up your posts and refrain from disrespecting our neighbors and new residents. Is this how you feel about all people coming to Houston? Or are you selective in your predjudice?

If they fixed it up like Hawaii, you bet I'd be the first one to sign up, you've obviously never been to Hawaii. Aloha, and pass the poy.............Mahalo !

But you are right, N.O. only has maybe 3 decent places to go, French Quarter, Market Area, and The Waterfront by the convention center and Harrah's. The rest is crap. I went to school at Southern Miss. I was in Nawlins about every weekend, I have been around that town, it ain't nice, there are some nice parts, but it ain't nice.

We can't take these kind of things personally. I love Houston, but let's face it, it's an acquired taste for a lot of people.

Last night the radio show "Marketplace" had a segment about rebuilding New Orleans that was making the point that after reconstruction the NO metro would be a lot more like Houston (ie sprawlish).
