Saw Capote on Thanksgiving. I admit to not knowing much about Truman Capote except he used to bat for my team, LOL, but this movie definitely made me want to know more about him. It was a bit slow at times, but the story it told was fascinating. Now I need to read In Cold Blood!

Saw that also. It was interesting. I read that Capote was the basis for the character Dill in "To Kill a Mockingbird", which makes sense since he was friends with Harper Lee.

I also saw "Good Night and Good Luck". It was OK.

I saw "Walk the Line" a week or so ago. I also highly recommend it.

The music is excellent, whether you're a big country fan or not. The acting is superb--Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny Cash) and Reese Witherspoon (June Carter) both did their own singing. It's amazing how true-to-life Joaquin's acting job was--he looked and sounded just like Johnny Cash. Definitely Oscar-worthy.

I really enjoyed Goon Night and Good Luck. Clooney was terrific.

While I don't consider myself a big fan of the series, I thought the Harry Potter movie was the best so far. I liked that it was darker than the others. It was what I expected the others to be, but were not.

Looks like we have some real heavy-hitters for the holidays--Rent, King Kong, Memoirs of a Geisha...

My only complaint about "Good Night and Good Luck" was that I kept wanting to yell out, "OK, OK, I get the parallels!"

"Geisha" looked interesting in the previews. King Kong...not.

For the holidays last week, I checked out the DVD of "HULK" from the library. I liked the way that he jumped around. I recommend it.

After months of no movies, this week I saw both Good Night and Good Luck and Rent. Both were well done -- Good Night was obivously trying to draw a lot of parallels to today's political climate and that of the McCarthy era. Rent was good, but I kept thinking I'd like it better on stage than in a movie. When I saw it last night at the Edwards Grand Palace they were having sound problems with that showing, so a few parts were hard to hear. But I really didn't miss anything, and they gave all of us passes for free admission to a future movie as we were leaving the theater. Rent did get me excited about my upcoming vacation in New York in a few weeks though!

Now I want to see Capote, Walk the Line (not a big Johnny Cash fan but the film looks very good) and Geisha when it opens in a few weeks.

agreed, I can't wait, I finally saw Batman Begins last nice on Demand, that is definately the best out of the 5 made, IMHO. <_<

Saw Batman on a plane recently. It was alright, I guess, but I haven't seen the last few of the series to compare it to.

Do any of you out there ever rent any movies from Blockbuster and/or Hollywood Video?

No that's not personal. I rent my movies from Smoochies or 24 hr video on the East Freeway. They have a better selection than Blockbuster. Check out "Wife, delicate flower in Heat" by Less Bacon.

Those sound like privately-owned places only there in Houston. Over here, there's one down the street from me called "Video Holiday". It has a "back room" for adults only. I don't think that national chains like Blockbuster or Hollywood have any "back rooms".

I'm just wondering if you think that their rental fee are too high or just about right. You make it sound like I'm asking you a personal question.

LOL. I guess I am just paranoid by all these telemarketers. No offense anyone. I only stick to one place though, which is Blockbuster, so I do not know how prices vary.

Brokeback Mountain hits theaters tomorrow, and is getting excellent reviews.

(And let me beat whoever's going to make reference to the South Park episode about the cowboy movie at the film festival to the punch. Your joke's ruined. So are the ones about the probable porn spinoff movie titles. Yes. We've thought of that already.)

In the Chronicle this morning that wasn't listed as opening this weekend. Frequently movies open in LA and NYC first, then out in the sticks a few weeks later. Not sure why.

That didn't sound right - after all Houston is the 4th largest metro and I like to think we couldn't be THAT behind the times - so I checked. Apparently, this movie won't hit Houston until 12/16, and guess where it's opening?

The Landmark River Oaks on Gray.

WTF?

I love that theatre, but what's up with opening a big screen Oscar contender at a 2 screen, 65 year old venue?

Actually I think we're like 10th biggest metro, but in any event they aren't singling out Houston. Movies just open in NY and LA first, then the rest of the country. Just because it's an Oscar contender, doesn't mean it's going to break any box office records or be popular with all audiences. They just figure that it will play better with the River Oaks audience than the local mall cineplex crowd.

"Geisha" looked good in the previews, but NY Times had a pretty negative review of it today.

Just saw "Syriana". It was actually better than I expected. Some of the reviews have complained that it is hard to follow, but it isn't all that difficult. There are a number of interelated stories about big oil companies, Mideast politics, the CIA in the Mideast, and suicide bombers. The one story line that seemed out of place was about Matt Damon as a financial analyst who ends up advising a fictional oil-producing emirate that centers much of the movie. There are a few scenes that are supposed to take place in Houston, which is the headquarters of the oil company, but those scenes weren't actually filmed here. You will be relieved to learn that the Texan characters do not wear cowboy hats and boots like JR Ewing.

We saw the movie "Rent" two weeks ago, and just loved it. Fantastic singing voices from all involved, especially Angel in those six-inch high heels and Rosaria Dawson as Mimi. I was surprised to see as many as ten couples walk out during the movie at the theatre in the Woodlands. The group of teenage boys that left early on in the high school letter jackets calling out to those of us that stayed to "enjoy your gay musical" was surprising too. Didn't these people have a clue before they handed over their money what the topic of the movie was and that it would be presented as a musical as it was on Broadway?

I saw "The Squid and the Whale" at the Angelika the other night. Not as dry as I thought it would be, but I liked it very much!

Also, don't see King Kong...

Rent was actually pretty good, but I couldn't help but giggle everytime they start up a new song.
