Instead we get 609 Main....which don't get me wrong, it's a nice building, but one step above 'm e h'. If it didn't have a slant roof, 609 could be placed anywhere in the 1980s. Meanwhile in Houston, we struggle to break the 150 meter mark, anything higher here is almost considered a "supertall" to us. For whatever reason, the economics work in those cities and nowhere else. Manhattan has no choice but to build up. Chicago tries to keep pace. Everyone else is a distant 3rd. In reality, I think the only way you get this somewhere else is someone with a lot of money and doesn't mind over paying because they have local pride or just like the attention because they'll be losing money. On the other hand, I can't imagine that a residential/hotel/office like this couldn't work in Houston. But that probably just shows my CRE financial ignorance.
