thanks guys..

Brijonmang, i got the VIsion 2+ model.

i originally bought a used version 2.0 off of ebay last month which turned out to be a bust (the gimbal was messed up from a crash. the disclosed scratches on 2 of the arms should of been enough to ward me off, but i didnt know what i was getting into) so i got refunded and recently bought a new v3.0.

Highway6, its a DJI Phantom. from what all ive read, they are arguably some of the best ready to fly camera drones available. its very easy to fly, and the camera is fantastic. if you shoot videos more than photos i hear the GoPro is the way to go (slightly better video quality, but not as good of photo quality), mounted to the non-vision Phantom. if i didnt have money to blow at the time i probably wouldnt of been able to get it as they are kind of pricey, and the risk of crashing something so expensive is nerve wrecking, but really so long as you dont do anything stupid with it and avoid overhead obstacles, crashing it isnt an issue. you dont even really have to fly it besides take off and landing, in order to take photos. it just hovers in place in the air. if i want to just fly the quad around for the sake of playing with it then i go out to an empty field.

heres a video i took today at Discovery Green.. it was pretty windy but i figured id take out the drone anyways since the weather ended up being nice.

you have to manually choose to watch in HD.

edit: for some reason it only lets you adjust the quality of this preview box to 720. if you click the link and watch the video over on YouTube you can view it in 1080.

They are incredibly fun, just kind of a pricey hobby. If you do invest the money in one I suggest a camera/gimbal guard (the gimbal was what was messed up on the used one I bought, and a camera/gimbal set up MSRPs at like $700) so if it does crash or you land on something it doesn't hit the camera set up. Prop guards are suggested for beginners as well..

heres the full sized photo from the "crane crop" over on the Amegy thread. also stills from my first urban night flight (same location..). i need to work on playing with manual camera settings for night shots. the night photos came out pretty noisy (no surprise).

Edit:

i just put together a little video of my night flight launch and a pan towards uptown. i realize the transitions make the video look like a 5th grader put it together (lmao), but its all i had to work with on YouTubes video editor. the original pan towards uptown was way too quick and jittery so i cut it out and tried to seam the videos together at the beginning of the second rotation, but it left a very noticeable cut in the video.

on the plus side, i stumbled across a way to adjust the joystick sensitivity so i think I'm going to turn the rotating/pan sensitivity way down so it can't turn on me so fast. should make for better videos in the future if/when i do that adjustment.

I have a few suggestions. The first is memorial park. I'd think the views of Downtown and uptown would be fantastic. Also, at the small park at Main @ Holcombe looking towards the Med Center & Downtown. If you could find a safe and good location from the old astroworld plot on a clear day, the views of the Williams Tower are awesome and would remind me of riding on Dungeon Drop.

Another suggestion would be close to I-10 & Heights Blvd. it's a great view of Downtown looking directly at you (since we all know the grid is different). That would also yield a great view of the development across the freeway south towards AIG.

One more suggestion would be Jones Plaza Downtown to get a fantastic view of the BofA, Pennzoil, and Chase.

Happy Hunting.

Edit: Grady Park (San Felipe @ Yorktown), should yield some good shots of the Uptown Area.

Yeah I wish I had more time to play it. It's awesome though. Much better game than SimCity (sadly).

Sorry to steal your thunder cloud, but I just came across these videos today.  They are awesome downtown aerials...also, illegal based on the laws passed down by the FAA.  However, you can see all the projects going on downtown from pretty sweet perspectives:
