Guilty Pleasures: Movies/Music

The song is a rejection of fatalism, and it's inane.

The rejection of communism is a recurring theme in Rush lyrics.

See chorus:

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill

I will choose a path that's clear

I will choose freewill

The ready guide is a dictator that structures the life and economy of all individuals acting within a society. The dictator can take many forms, but it is an entity that makes all your decisions for you, whether they are in your interests or not. In other anti-communism songs, like 2112, the dictator takes the form of priests, but those priests "hold high the red star". It is very clear what is intended.

Then they point out that the decision to empower the dictator is itself a choice on your part to abdicate your choices, but that the choice itself proves that a choice can be made, and that if you believe that you've made a capable choice, then you probably don't need someone else to make your choices for you.

"Phantom fears and kindness that can kill" is the line that concretes my opinion that this song is anti-communist. Phantom fears are frequently cited as reason to regulate and control individuals and the economy. In the name of kindness to poor disenfranchised peasants, communists only worsened their plight. This is, to me, a lyric that is clearly directed at communism. It may also go against religion, but it is definitely anti-communist.

Lastly, the name of the song is spelled out Freewill, as one word. That usage has meaning. They did not desire to discuss free will in a broader philosophical sense.

Good Day HAIF.

I was just curious about some of you folks, and what might be a guilty pleasure like a movie or a song that you probably shouldn't like, but do. I'm not expecting anything creepy like "I'm 45 years old and "Wheels on the bus" is my favorite song, listen to it everyday!" Just maybe a current pop song that is stuck in your head or a pretty awful movie that you might be ashamed to admit you have it on DVD, Blue-Ray, and Digital Copy. So, spill the beans.

Well, I guess I'll start.

Muriel's Wedding. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/)

I was bored on a sunday and we passed this over on Netflix. My friend said she had seen it when she was little (back when Kroger had VHS rentals). So I fell in love! This movie is just good and hilarious all around. Every character is awesome, and I love that it's in Australia. I could watch this movie at least twice a week. The fact that it has almost only ABBA songs is the icing on the cake. Probably my favorite movie of all time. Also, a great movie to enjoy some wine or a vice of your choice to.

If I listed all of my guilty pleasures I would no doubt come off as a whack job, but I will admit to an occasional weakness for ABBA.   I've actually had a running argument about their greatness with some friends for decades now.

And James Bond movies, of course!  :D

just between us.........i watched "the craft" over and over for ten years.  i bought the soundtrack.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoM4OXQVCcE  i watched it when i drank, which was often, and marveled at how similar the methods of the craft were to southern fundamentalist magical thinking.  plus, i was really into cool black clothing.

oh, but i don't hide that one.  i do hide my gregg araki movies from certain friends and family.  every now and then, i have to bring out "the living end", "doom generation", "nowhere", "totally f****ed up", "splendor", and more recently "kaboom".  araki used music and settings in his movies that i thought were unique to me and my circle of friends here in houston.  i was amazed to see the same type of subculture parameters in a movie (in and about) LA.

i still have a few hundred christian cds from my youth and twenties.  some of it is so bad.  every now and then i just need a little amy grant or resurrection band.

Doom Generation, ha! I tried to watch it but the "whatever" culture was too astronomical for me to finish it.

I have had a recent obsession with new synth pop songs. I will post some links later, but here are the songs and titles.

"Fireshrine" - Purity Ring

"The Mother we share" - CHVRCHES

"Royals" - Lorde

They're pretty awful but they are so much fun!

Here are a couple of songs I've been listening to. Don't mind sharing with you all, but reluctant to share with my friends.

I don't know if your one of those people (like me) where a music video can make or break a song, but I feel like the video doesn't do it justice.

This is another one that is really catchy.

She actually writes a lot of songs for Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and someone else I forgot.

This one is pretty awful. It has a heavy r&b sound, with some pretty weird/dark lyrics.

I have to be honest, I really don't get the music video. I've even watched it sober...

This one i'm not too proud of. It's so tween and awful. I have to start the song over again when I hear it in the car.

i like the last one (sans the stupid lyrics).  her voice has an interesting quality.  i'd like to hear her sing grown up songs.

i'd forgotten i had a thing for kylie minogue and olivia newton john until i listed to your video posts.  i usually do not share that either.

my "cassette" walkman had newton john's album "physical" playing for hours on end as our family traveled across the country on family trips.....that and amy grant.  now that i think of it, i listened almost exclusively to female singers until my late teens....figures.

My biggest guilty pleasure? I still go to numbers on Friday nights. But it's not so surprising actually, I used to stay up every Saturday night listening to the live club feed from 6400 on 93q.

I had 104 on in the car the other day, one of my friends was in the car and I started singing along to some ke$ha his words "I can't believe that anyone who likes nitzer ebb can actually listen to this crap" his wife laughed at me :-(

I can't help but watch the movie hackers whenever it is on.

I like "Lies" better than "The Mother We Share", but either way I'd have trouble classifying CHVRCHES as a guilty pleasure (then again, I've always had trouble with the concept of guilty pleasures in general). I assume you know they're going to be at House of Blues at the end of November?

I wonder how many HAIFers have numbers as a guilty pleasure? I've been once in the last year.
