Ethanra
So, top ten .... five or half (50%) in Houston? Someone will get argumentative on this one. Also several international companies like Shell have their U.S. headquarters in Houston. Also Exxon/Mobil has thousands of employees in Houston even though their based out of a Dalllas suburb. If I understand right the long time CEO has been up their his whole life and didn't want to move so he kept the corporate offices in a buisness park in the suburb where he lives. Alll the companies action is down here... There are plenty of examples of where the HQ's is in a different state and majority of the production is some where else. NDtexan
That has certainly been discussed.I wouldn't bet on it...Exxon Mobil's campus in Irving is impressive. It's surrounded by native Mesquite trees and it's set well back from the street on a small hill, and the building itself looks like an oriental pagoda or something. It's really pretty damn beautiful. Plus, it's ten minutes from the airport in the nice Las Colinas area. Edited October 13, 2006 by NDtexan
mls1202
Don't forget to add Schlumberger to that list as they are moving their New York headquarters down to the San Felipe Buiding (where they already have a presence). That puts the top three oil service companies all in Houston.

(Exxon has more employees here then anywhere else). Some companies (such as Exxon) have their Headquarters in one city, but may have a larger facility/more office space/more employees in another city, or even another country. kjb434
Exxon purposely does not want the heads of the company to be located where their largest division is located. This would show favoritism to the Houston Division.Boeing has done the same thing when they moved their corporate headquarters to Chicago. They still have more employees in the Seattle area for their passenger plane division.

Perhaps I'm biased or just thick-headed, but wouldn't you want HQ to be as convenient to the greatest number of key personnel as possible? And is Houston considered a "division"? I thought that we were home to a number of their "divisions", as well as tiny fractions of countless other larger "divisions".

Montrose1100
Niche- The first two questions, I too have wondered. There is no specific label, "Houston Division"... it goes a little like this. ExxonMobil is organized functionally into a number of global operating divisions. These divisions are grouped into 3 categories for reference purposes:1) Upstream2) Downstream3) ChemicalOperating divisions by category are as follows:Upstream-ExxonMobil Exploration CompanyExxonMobil Development CompanyExxonMobil Production CompanyExxonMobil Gas and Power Marketing CompanyExxonMobil Upstream Research CompanyDownstream-ExxonMobil Refining and Supply CompanyExxonMobil Fuels Marketing CompanyExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties CompanyExxonMobil Research and Engineering CompanyExxonMobil Global Services CompanyChemical-ExxonMobil Chemical CompanyUpstream and Chemical operations are headquartered in Houston, Texas, and the downstream operations are headquartered at the heritage-Mobil headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.-Source (Wikipedia)
GhostDog
Exxon being based in Irving is kinda misleading.I mean the corporate HQ is definitely in Irving however the majority of corporate offices and employees (in NA) is based here in H-town.Chevron in Houston has a much larger presence than in SanRamon.same with BP which has a fairly large office in the Chicago suburbs however has far more corporate employees based here in West Houston...Can you explain the logic? He was in Irving then, and he stayed after the merger. It had nothing to do with the merger, which should more accurately be termed a buyout. It was only called a merger so as to not offend Mobil employees too much.
