Flamingyak
The Uptown Houston website lists this new project as:A.D. Players Theatre: New construction is planned for a performance theatre at Yorktown and Westheimer. The 85,000 square foot theatre complex will hold three theaters with a total seating of 1,000. The theatre should be complete within three years. The A.D. Players broke ground on the new location February 2006.Do we know any additional information? The AD Players theatre website does not have any information about the architect, renderings, or any other information. This will be a great venue. What else can we find out?-Yak-

Jeebus
There has been a sign up at that location for at least 3 years now.
elecpharm
There has been a sign up at that location for at least 3 years nowat least 3 years if not longer and the clock keeps ticking.i wonder if it is a monetary issue. are they trying to raise the needed funds to complete the project? do they own the property?i began to doubt the project when cvs set up shop on a corner of the lot.i'd like to see this project come to fruition.
Montrose1100
The idea is nice, while its only 1 (proposed) theater, it put Uptown in a whole new competition with Downtown.

SWM
The land is theirs. It was purchased years ago. Now they are raising money for the theater itself:http://www.adplayers.org/capital.htmlFor those of you anxious to see a theater in the Galleria/Uptown area, I'm sure A. D. Players would appreciate your financial support! Edited October 4, 2006 by SWM
houstonartstudent
just drove by today and they have a new sign up with an awesome rendering!!! I'd say it looks a little like the hobby center with the glass front, but with a curved front instead of an angle

gwilson
I have to say, if they couldn't afford to build the theater, how do they expect to maintain it? I would have thought a much less conspicuous and not to mention expensive lot would have made more sense.
Vertigo58
Is this to be just another multiplex type theater? Sounds more like a "live" on stage theater venue which is something we really need. Really need, I stress.

Educate me, but does this mean that every play thats performed will have a religous theme? Just curious. I still would like to see either way. I still would like to see either way. The theater performs both religous and secular plays. It was founded in 1967 by Jeanette Clift George. All of the shows are family friendly and generally have a redeeming message, even if they are not directly religous. More information is available at www.adplayers.org The theater is currently located at 2710 W. Alabama. There is also plays for children performed in a space at St. Luke's Methodist Church. The Great Hizzy!
I'll definitely be trying to look out for the new renderings when I'm in the area. This is very encouraging.
Vertigo58
I'll definitely be trying to look out for the new renderings when I'm in the area. This is very encouraging. That would be wonderful! I hope the sets/lighting will be on a grand scale. The young aspiring actors could gain some great experience here then move on to far more grand opportunities in theater. Skies the limit! Hark! I hear some Shakespeare in the distance.
The Great Hizzy!
Well, after driving by this morning and seeing the sign posted on the property, I can definitely confirmt that it looks a LOT like the Hobby Center design, except the roofline is curved rather than angular and it doesn't look to be as tall. The color scheme and window treatments are very much the same, however.

The theater itself is beautiful but the place itself is not very handicap friendly at all. Everyone has to go down steep steps to visit the RR. Its very difficult/dangerous for women in evening wear. Elevators are too small and take forever when there is a big crowd. Parking in back garage is not very safe either. On the good side, the 2nd level has a grand view of the DT skyline. My personal fav will always be the Wortham of course. Wonder if there is a website on this new structures progress? Guess I can check the AD Player site. Is this the same construction? Wish I could confirm, maybe another poster will say. What I did in the mean time sign up on the website to learn of upcoming shows. I recall a recent interview with Kevin Spacey where he urged everyone to get interested in live theater especially for all aspiring thespians. MarkLTD
When the theater company was started 40 years ago, it was a very small troop of college students and at one of their first events, the founder was asked what the name of her troop was. She replied "The After Dinner Players" because they were hoping to be fed. The name stuck and 41 years later it's still the name of the company. As for the other post, I am heading down Westheimer this morning and will try to help confirm whether the land is being cleared yet.

A.D. had me thinking of Greek or Roman Coliseum-like stage presence/sound.
