The Houston You Don't See

Lots of the old neighborhoods that surround downtown are ghettos and few rarely travel through them so Id thought Id take some photos of a rarely viewed part of Houston. I also have some night photos of downtown that I took later that day. Enjoy.

These first photos are from the fifth ward directly north of downtown.

On the other side of 59 from downtown, a lot of the vacant old industrial lots and some blocks of old houses are being torn down and replaced with this utter crap. There is seriously blocks upon blocks of these terrible looking apartment buildings popping up on both the east and west side of downtown. I really hope that in the future our inner city doesnt become one monotonous tin neighborhood, but Im afraid its heading in that direction.

This area is located just southeast of downtown.

This was from last year, I was just walking around downtown and turned around a corner and there must have been 5k people in this crowd, it was pretty amazing.

Great set of photos..

Where was this one taken from.. the Hilton Americas ?

That used to be the Maxwell House factory. I was up on top of the tower a few times in the early 80's. Great views of Downtown from there.

Great images. The one of the man in front of the low brick wall is a certain contest winner.

I was also moved by images 7 & 8 (pardon if my counting is inaccurate) of the warehouse with the "cotton ball" sky and image 11 of the HL&P building.

We do see these sights of our city every day but most of them don't get our attention. I guess the unique (and sometimes beautiful) is overpowered by what is around it.

I have a gift "or curse" of focusing in on old machinery such as cars and tractors in the clutter. For example, my eye went immediately to the 1968 Firebird in the front yard of the house in image 14. I know it is a '68 year model and not a '67 because I can see the arrow shaped side marker light on the rear fender. Does the owner of this car know he or she has a worthy restoration candidate? Of course, the pink Edsel in the foreground of image 44 jumped off my monitor right at me.

Excellent work, Photoliterland.

  • 5 weeks later...

Well done...the wooden houses remind me of the East End neighborhoods I grew up in.

Does anyone know the history of the long white bldg with 13 arched windows, sitting somewhere around Congress, near east side...or the Art Deco or Moderne, sea-foam green one (Leeland & St. Emanuel) that is now Chinatown Printing?
