margokorin
Just saw a sign up on the building that once housed Vivianns nightclub. I sure do love that purple building. Our local homeless man always talks about when Vivianns and the Black Cat were the places to be on a saturday night! Wonder what exciting new hipster bar is coming soon? TheNiche
i was told last week that there's something like 87 liquor permits in the pipeline for the wash. corridor. There are 133 TABC permits in the 77007 zip code, including some for places that I'm not yet aware of. ...but a lot of places have multiple permits (Spec's, for instance). And browsing the list and looking at what is already there, I just can't think of where that many new establishments would go!

TheNiche
Is there an online link of that list? I'm curious to see the potential new places.Yep, just google for TABC and prod around on their page. Their information is cumbersome, but fiddle around with it and you can get it to work in Excel. You can also look at reported violations. Those can be interesting. So does this list include places that haven't opened as well? I saw there was a "Pub on Washington" (I'm assuming this is Pub Fiction?) at 5102 Washington and a "Tap's House of Beers" at 5120 Washington, but I've never seen either. Why would they get a license before they open? Also, has anyone heard anything about Tap's House of Beers? This sounds like an interesting place. RedScare
Maybe because a bar couldn't really open without first having a license. Just my guess; I don't have any background in the restaurant/bar business.Correct. To be more precise, they could open, but could not sell alcohol without the license. Most would consider that bad for business. It should be noted that the procurement of a license can take from 1 month to several months, depending on numerous factors, such as background checks on the bar owners, and distance that the front door (or property line) sits from churches, schools and other protected places in the statutes. Plus, both the city and the county must sign off on the permit before TABC will issue it. If there are problems, one must do battle with the city or county or TABC, including potential lawsuits to overturn a negative ruling. Not knowing if any of these factors will come into play makes it good business to secure the permit BEFORE spending money on buildout. Interesting, good to know. So it's safe to assume that if a place has a permit it should be opening sometime in the near future? It'd be nice to have some place within walking distance to get a beer . Cova's not bad, but sometimes (ok, most of the time) I rather just have a nice cold beer. I didn't see Benjy's on that list of TABC permits. Aren't they opening up this month?

There has been lots of work and cleaning out done to those 2 buildings. I hope they keep the buildings and put the bars inside. Right now, we do a lot of walking to Cahill's and Max's, so having somewhere closer to us would be nice. Just hope it's doesn't get too super-trendy crowded like The Drake... Just hope it's doesn't get too super-trendy crowded like The Drake...It actually wouldn't bother me if the bars never showed up and some top notch restaurants decided to take their place. Bars seem to come and go a lot faster than restaurants do, not to mention they tend to attract a certain demographic (i.e. DWI's, street urinations, etc). I actually went by Pagoda (behind Cadillac Bar) the other day and it is marketed as a bistro/bar, which seemed pretty interesting.
RedScare
The bars and niteclubs are part of the natural progression of the strip. The bar and niteclub owners come and and retrofit the buildings for use as bars, installing infrastructure such as plumbing and electricity. After they run their course, they move on, leaving a structure that is easily converted to restaurant use. The marketing done by bars and niteclubs also establishes the strip as a center of evening commerce. While the niteclubs can be slightly (or largely) annoying during their time on the strip, within several years they will have largely moved on, and restaurants will replace them. This process has been repeated in numerous locales around town, and there is no reason to suspect that it will not also occur on Washington.Hang tough. You will easily outlast the trendiness. There is a pseudo "gentlemen's club" place going in, but it will not have to have an SOB permit (meaning no topless girls). Their TABC notice sign has been up since September or so. They were slated to open in November, but due to permitting, Ike, etc. it has taken longer.Benjy's should open in the next 2 weeks, so that will bring more good food to the area. Personally, I think he'll do well in that location.Nox has the same owners of Kobain, so fans of that joint should be pleased here.Bedford, Big Star Bar, Block 21, and Cedar Creek are all now open. Bacchus
It appears as though notices have been posted on buildings and land is being cleared (and buildings cleaned out) on the South side of Washington in between Lester and Detering (just East of the CVS) as well as the same side of the street one block closer to downtown (in b/w Lester and Reinerman -- the purple building). These are both pretty good sized lots, especially the United Hardware lot in b/w Lester and Detering. Anyone know what is going in there? Please tell me it's not the titter that was referenced earlier in this thread.
