  1. 2.2 million in the greater metropolitan area???? Good grief. How can they get simple facts sooooo wrong?
  2. Those numbers are correct. I'm not sure what your point is. My point was merely that your statement that Houston's claim to No. 2 Status among cities is only true because of the crazy past annexation is simply false. In a comparison of cities, even if we used Houston's 1900 city limits, Houston would still be No. 2 among cities. Whether that is a terribly meaningful list is another question; but it is what it is. (Honestly, I see us touting the no. 3 metro ranking as often as I see the no. 2 city ranking.) FWIW, the Metropolitan Area Fortune 500 rankings from 2011 along with the number of companies and their 2011 population ranking: 1. NYC 70+ (1) 2. CHI 28 (3) 3. HOU 23 (5) 4. LA 20 (2) DFW 20 (4) MSP 20 (16) 7. SFO 19 (11) 8. WDC 17 (7) 9. Detroit 15 (13) 10. Philly 12 (6) Atlanta 12 (9) 12. Boston 11 (10) San Jose 11 (31) 14. Charlotte 10 (33) Cleveland 10 (28) 16. Cincy 9 (27) Denver 9 (21) Pittsburgh 9 (22) St. Louis 9 (19) 20. Seattle 8 (15) here is an interesting chart showing the number of Fortune 500 companies per 1 million residents. Metro areas range from 7.82 Fortune 500 companies per million residents down to 0.49 Fortune 500's per million residents. (Houston had 4.62) I think this was maybe from the 2010 Fortune 500.
  3. I think Houston has exactly 1 building in that category (BG Group Place, with 46 stories). The only other one that is close is 1500 Louisiana, with 40 stories, but it does not qualify for the list because ground was broken in 1999.
  4. That's another myth that needs to be put to rest. Even if we only counted the downtown headquarters in the Fortune 500 listing, Houston would still rank second for Fortune 500 companies. (There were 13 Fortune 500 HQs in downtown Houston, ahead of both Dallas and Atlanta, who tied for third place, each with 10 in their entire respective cities.) A reasonably restricted city of Houston (downtown and uptown) would give us 18 Fortune 500 HQs. There are 20 Fortune 500 HQs inside the Beltway. (Again, this is all based on the 2011 list.)
  5. My list is up to 31 BBVA Building on Post Oak, apt tower at sage & westheimer, and 3009 post oak all started in 2011. Plus Endeavor and 2 towers at Palisade Palms. (Anadarko does not count because they broke ground in 1999, according to Emporis.)
  6. Wow! That is huge! Way to go GHP! I've never been prouder to be a member.
  7. Your first sentence is a PERFECT summary. I expect no better from the current leadership of United, but I'm pretty disappointed in Mr. Bethune.
  8. Something is amiss. Houston has had more than 20 buildings of at least 20 stories since 2000. I count 25. WTF? Did they just forget about Houston?
  9. There are reasonable arguments to be made on both sides, but if we are going to "return" all of the 1% sales tax "transit taxes" (as if roads are not also part of transit), how about we also return all of the nation's highway (gasoline and diesel fuel) taxes to building and maintaining highways. Just sayin' ;-)
  10. That was nothing but that writer's own personal preference. He also says in that article that all of the details such as scheduling and venues remain to be worked out.
  11. Why are we acting like there is so much mystery about the height of the buildings at the new ExxonMobil campus? While we may not know exact numbers, we have a very good idea that there are no strucutures anywhere near 20 stories. http://houston.culturemap.com/newsdetail/01-03-12-the-secrets-of-exxon-mobil-new-north-houston-campus-are-revealed/
  12. Relax. ;-) The entire downtown (all classes) is 90.2% leased. Class A space (which is what the article was speaking of) is 92.3% leased.
  13. Not completely certain about Hong Kong or Paris, but neither New York or London skylines look anything like an Indian casino, nor do they aspire to. You seem to be confusing skyline lighting with the sort of spectacular lighting used in Times Square and Picadilly Circus (in both cases that sort of spectacular lighting is limited to those areas). Agreed. Or a Marriott Marquis
  14. Is there something behind the paywall that gives you that idea? The portion in front of the paywall would lead one toward the conclusion of construction happening pretty soon.
  15. This from Culturemap back in November: The Louis Vuitton store in The Gallera plans to nearly double its space, adding an entrance onto Westheimer, several VIP salons and new shopping space on a second floor. Next door, the Burberry boutique will also expand to showcase more of the distinctive high-end clothing from Christopher Bailey's well-received runway collections. Both stores will relocate to temporary space inside the mall next spring while the renovations take place. The newly remodeled stores are scheduled to opening in mid-fall 2012.
  16. One of the criteria that is emphasized quite heavily in the RFQ materials is street-front retail to be included in the hotel development. So you may get your wish.
  17. I presume you meant the HIlton Hotel garage, not the HIlton Hotel itself? Yes, the Master Plan calls for removing that garage and replacing it with additional convention center space. The hotel itself survives, as is clearly depicted in the rendering. Yes, the Master Plan discusses the need for the north-end garage addition to accommodate the MetroRail line on the ground floor.
  18. This is a different mockup. The mockup that will be at Space Center Houston is one that is coming from Kennedy Space Center. http://www.39online.com/newsfix/kiah-newsfix-uss-consolation-story,0,1528582.story
  19. Sounds like a number of foolish rules, designed primarily to limit competition against existing brick & mortar restaurants. Note, however, that the Chron link says not that propane tanks are "not allowed" in downtown or the medical center, just that "City rules make it prohibitively expensive for food trucks to get a license to use propane tanks in either the Medical Center or downtown". A very quick look at the City's permitting requirements does not show any evidence that a downtown or medical center permit would be any more expensive. The only difference I see is that the size of propane tanks allowed are smaller in those two zones.
