  1. Hopefully you guys can get a deal like the one that saved O'Connell. IMO the archdiocese should try to get a South Belt/Clear Lake location.
  2. http://web.archive.org/web/20030524175058/...nfo/history.htm It opened on September 8, 1965.
  3. Here is a population graph showing the changes to Westbury High School over the years: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...609/school.aspx But in 2006-2007 the population dipped to 2,099 with African-American percentages going from 52% to 49% and Hispanic going from 38% to 42%: http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Westbury_HS.pdf Also here is the school's boundary map http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolbounda.../WestburyHS.pdf
  4. If the Mt. Carmel kids living in Houston ISD (or those outside of HISD who want to pay tuition) want to go to a small school they could try some of the HISD magnet schools. Clear Creek ISD has an Early College High School in Houston for its students. Those living in Pasadena ISD have to small university preparatory options, though.
  5. I'd also like to know exactly what happened with the idea of moving Mt. Carmel to the South Belt...
  6. The Chronicle article expands on this: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5729344.html The other schools are associated with, but not operated by, the archdiocese; that's why I wondered how many students would transfer to the other schools. It turns out that the other schools all have higher tuitions and some do not accept 4th year (senior) students. If the majority of students will not stay in the Catholic school system, then where will they do? Other private schools? Comprehensive high schools? Charter schools? Magnet schools?
  7. 1. Maybe Fox got it wrong, as the news story said: "About 200 students attend the school, which opened in 1956. " 2. Maybe St. Thomas could successfully resist it, as St. Thomas caters to wealthier students and doesn't seem to have a problem getting students. What about Incarnate Word? If it is not at capacity, won't it have to absorb students and some teachers? EDIT: Schooldigger also states that the student body is near 200 kids: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...543/school.aspx
  8. http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/pages/Ne...mp;pageId=3.2.1 = Fox announced it! Also... 200 kids go to Carmel?!?!? Should the Archdiocese convert St. Thomas and/or Incarnate Word into coed schools?
  9. Is the increasing wealth in Galveston and the suburbanization of Galveston County helping O'Connell?
  10. It sounds like Mt. Carmel ought to (and likely will) move to be close to the Clear Lake/League City area. Also, where do Galveston's richest families typically send their kids to school? I would think O'Connell would be doing okay because it is the only Catholic high school in Galveston County.
  11. The Archdiocese could convert Mount Carmel to the "Cristo Rey" model. The Cristo Rey model allows for students to pay up to 65% of their tuitions by working in entry-level internships in companies, so they go to school AND they work. http://www.cristorey.net/cwsp/overview.html
  12. Wow... just wow. I heard in terms of the Houston Catholic schools Mount Carmel had the least prestige. It seems it it is mainly blue collar. Could this "prestige" thing be class-ism? Will the Archdiocese build a new high school in the suburbs? Or will it try a Christo Rey model? Or will it simply reduce the capacity on the east side?
  13. Considering there is a CVS at 9838 Buffalo, putting it on the site of the former Residence Inn would be too close.
  14. I remembered watching Aladdin in a unit there... - I don't remember what I was doing there.
  15. This house is zoned to Briargrove Elementary, Grady Middle, and Lee High (with Lamar and Westside as options) in Houston ISD - Since many apartments were rezoned away from Grady the school zoning for this house may appeal to people more.
  16. This is opening near Northline Mall: http://hs.houstonisd.org/nechs/ It seems like a lot of school districts are gravitating towards this model - Houston ISD will have three strictly "early college" high schools. In addition Aldine ISD has one and Clear Creek ISD has one.
  17. Let's see... * The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch - http://www.thefellowship.org/treasurecove/index.html * St. Peter's http://www.stpeterskaty.org/ECDC/ecdc.htm There could be more in this list too: http://www.katymagazine.com/childcare.htm
  18. Do you want a church school that extends into elementary school and beyond, or do you want a church school only for preschool?
  19. IMHO that is the case too. Also, though, Snopes has some tips on how to avoid "random" crime: * Snopes evaluates this chain letter about how to avoid random crime and offers its own thoughts: http://www.snopes.com/crime/prevent/ninetips.asp - the important part is not the e-mail discussed, but the important part IS the commentary by Barbara Mikkelson.
  20. IMO it's not so much that it's Greyhound, but it's how the Greyhound station is handled. If they had security around the whole block I don't think it will be a problem. With the current Midtown Greyhound they have security in the building and at the front, so the panhandlers go to the sides. There needs to be security surrounding the station, with security guards (armed, of course) willing to shoo away beggars, winos, and panhandlers.
  21. The panhandlers know that there is security inside the bus station so they go to the side to intercept riders. When I arrived at the bus station and went to the side to take a ride one time, some guy went up to me and asked, as an opening question, "Are you prejudiced against black people?" I said no so he made some request I didn't understand; I just said "No thanks - I have a ride." Then he asked me for two dollars - "I have no money" (I would have given the beggar NOTHING even if I had money) - I went into my mom's car and she drove off. I didn't notice at the time, but she told me she was honking the horn to get that guy off of me. In a way I felt amused by how a beggar would use that question to try to guilt me into giving him money...
  22. This house is zoned to in Houston ISD: * Poe ES * Lanier MS * Lamar HS
  23. I know there is something being built along 288 between 610 and Beltway 8 but I am not sure what it is... - I think it's some business. I would love to know what it is
  24. Deb, if you ever come back - HISD is rezoning the Pilgrim apartments to Pilgrim K-8, so Grady is no longer congested

  25. What the COH could do is air a very catchy, popular, clever anti-homeless ad mixing footage of *mentally competent* homeless people giving their tactics away to pictures of liquor. The end message: "Do not give any handouts to them."
