  1. If we prod city council into passing a preservation bill with "teeth," that won't happen. There has been an opportunity for city council to pass a bill like this protecting both the River Oaks and the Alabama, and there likely still is one. The Save River Oaks Theatre groups really need to put the pressure on the politicians.
  2. I always wondered - wouldn't it be neat if the Alamo Drafthouse got the Alabama Theater? It seems like central Houston would be very accommodating for one.
  3. One thing that surprised me was that the city of Tomball has one elementary school serving all of the city limits (in the city limits of Tomball it also has two intermediate schools, one middle school, and one high school). Does TISD plan to build another elementary school in the city limits of Tomball?
  4. I think we may see some more airlines pull out of Gatwick; because Heathrow is preferred by business, airlines that wanted more Heathrow slots are putting a/c at Heathrow.
  5. This could make people more inclined to fly Southwest, which, as pointed below, still allows for two free bags. Right now Houston seems balanced between CO and WN - But if there is a loss of brand identity for CO (i.e. loss of "service"), then it makes people more inclined to fly WN.
  6. Exactly. Make a fuss. E-mail and send snail mail. Tell the airline point blank that it will LOSE good will AND money if it enacts this decision.
  7. Ricco67: 1. How did government screw up in Canada? 2. Please keep in mind that Canada's system is on a province by province basis; it would be like if Texas had a Texas Department of Health. Statements about Canada's health care statement are either true or false, depending on the province. See http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/canada.asp
  8. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5985207.html Continental announced that it will begin charging for the first checked bag in October. So, why don't we show the airline how silly this decision is by writing letters. If that fails and October comes, do not check any bags for any reason on the airline. I would prefer that the airline raises ticket costs as opposed to tacking a fee on the passengers.
  9. Singapore's is an "honorary consulate" located out of an office in the Chase Tower. It's not at the same level as a Consulate General.
  10. Will the new building mean that more consulates will be established in that complex? Three are already at Four Oaks Place. Perhaps Transwestern should talk to the Swiss and the Australians and see if they want to re-establish their Houston missions. Also Transwestern should talk to Vietnam, the Philippines, South Africa, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Nigeria.
  11. Let's see - Who makes the decision that the theater has to go? We should examine the corporate structure - If we had minutes of the meetings it would be great. Just from looking at the website I found some key people, but I do not know which of them makes the decision "the theater has to go" So far, the only name I could get is the VP of Investor Relations: Richard Summers.
  12. And what about historic holdings in other parts of the United States? With the internet people know what is going on in Houston. I don't smell any bull butt product. What I said, Niche, was based on what Montrosian said, anyway. The desires of Houstonians indeed affect Weingarten outside of Houston; the struggle for the theater makes headlines in newspapers read by non-Houstonians. See: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/12/us/12pre...70&emc=eta1 -- <--The New York Times It may be true, Niche, that much of Weingarten focuses on new suburban products, but this could force Weingarten out of the urban, historic markets.
  13. I know that today that the part of the Shearn Elementary School boundary east of Stella Link is zoned to Pershing for MS and Madison for HS.
  14. And the more Weingarten does that, the more the stocks tumble, the more heckling the board members face, the more bottles of Vicodin consumed by the employees, and the less clients the group faces. If it wants to remain viable as a company, Weingarten must realize that Houstonians want control. We need to write our city council members and beg them to strengthen preservation laws. That will itself save Weingarten from itself.
  15. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/5804771.html A branch of DeBakey High School will open in Doha, Qatar. It will ultimately have grades 8-12. It will start with 8-10 in September 2008. The principal of the Houston DeBakey is going to Qatar to lead the Qatari school.
  16. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=...&id=6169265 And HISD plans to turn it into a charter school. I wonder what its name will become...
  17. Part of what I meant by reputation is socially damaging the people in charge of the business; each and every board member could be socially targeted. Businesses are made of people, and a way to damage the business is to socially ostracize the people in charge of the company. Let's use a board member as an example. If she finds that: * Nobody invites her to parties anymore * People who used to be her friends suddenly do not talk * She finds vicious rumors being spread about her personal life ...then she will find she is being socially ostracized. It doesn't take a magic spell to drive a board member into depression; it takes a form of media used to spread the word (could be the TV, the internet, or more mediums) and a population that accepts the idea. It may not save the theater, but it would be a good form of retaliation. These are rumors and reputations that they will have no choice but to care about. The idea of "ignoring" the cold shoulders and the personal attacks will not work. I am well aware that online petitions are meaningless. However I agree that the City ought to enact much stricter preservation laws and that this would most likely be the only realistic way to save the theater.
  18. The will held by the people? Or the will held by other tenants? My father said that he doesn't care about the rest of the center - he just cares about the theater; if this feeling is common then it has likely already been there. I could live with having the theater itself saved with the rest of the center gone, but if it will have a large garage it needs to be painted in an aesthetic manner. If the River Oaks property owners are negatively affected by the garage they should begin a hostile takeover process of Weingarten (one of the possible punishments I mentioned above); hopefully it could succeed and Weingarten could have new owners.
  19. There has to be a way in that the public can irreparably damage Weingarten in retaliation. Social shunning, vicious rumors, and personal attacks against company directors? Refusal of business offers? Mass selling of stock? Forced takeover attempts? Mass boycotts of company properties?
  20. Then the way to save the theater is for protesters that physically obstruct the theater site. That is possible to make people surround the theater and stand in the way of the demolition. If Houstonians truly care about the theater, they will make the company not do it, whether the company likes it or not. If Weingarten wants to remain viable in Houston, it should not even think about demolishing the River Oaks Theatre without an announcement. Even then, it shouldn't demolish it in the first place.
  21. I know Sterling HS's zone is getting new homes too, as is Worthing HS's zone.
  22. Yeah, the discussion boards need to be moderated. They need to IP Ban people who do not behave.
  23. Okay, HISD spent 3 million dollars to revamp Key... But some parents still want HISD to bulldoze the old Key and build a new school... While Saavedra floated the idea of closing Key and using it as HISD offices: http://www.chron.com/disp/commnts.mpl/front/5767177.html I think all the Chron posters seeing the 3 million as HISD "waste" don't understand that in fact there are various political forces. What it boils down to is that the Kashmere Gardens/Houston Gardens area wants a "bigger slice of the pie" and I feel the Kashmere Gardens/Houston Gardens communities used distortion to try to gain from the district.
  24. The Mykawa School is now used as the Minnetex Civic Center. My question: Where is it? I have searched the internet and cannot find an address for the place. Does anyone know where it is?
