  1. This reminds me that I need to get an eye exam. I'm the past I've always had perfect vision, but haven't had an exam in 2 years. What's most efficient way? I used to go to my family's eye dcotor but it's way too much of a hassle from where I live now. I've had people tell me Costco. I just want to do a quick walk-in for a basic exam.

I didn't have much time last time around, so I actually went to the Sears optical on Main and Wheeler - eye exam/dilation, lenses and frames, and it was decent and fast.

  2. Records show that the property changed hands from the Wilshire Village Corp. (run by J. Howard Cohen and registered in 1939) to Dilick in November 2002.

In 2002 it was Flat Stone II (run by Dilick) and then it changed to Alabama & Dunlavy Ltd c/o Commerce Equities (both of which are run by Dilick).

I can't find any association between Cohen and Flat Stone, Alabama & Dunlavy, or Commerce Equities, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. Current tax rolls show Jay H. Cohen owning a LOT of small, old, almost worthless homes in the 77004/77020 zip codes..

    Here are the corporations' information:

-Wilshire Village Corp. (J. Howard Cohen)

-Flat Stone II Ltd. (Matthew Dilick)

-Alabama & Dunlavy Ltd. (Matthew Dilick)

    -Commerce Equities (Matthew Dilick)

  3. I had some of the Kroger king cake (comes in the box pictured above with the choking hazard).

They had two kinds - regular and filled (the one I had was vanilla-filled). There's the icing on top, then vanilla icing-like stuff leaking all over. It was the most sugary food I've eaten in recent memory, but it was actually pretty good..

The golden baby was pretty creepy, though, outstretched arms and all..

  4. Unfortunately, like others have mentioned, the Chronicle leaves out a lot (including a source to see the text of this proposal).

The article mentions "The proposal has aroused critics who say the city should not use public funds to help people pay down car loans, credit card balances, or other debts" - specifically highlighting credit cards and cars, even if the "other debts" make up some portion of what this is going toward. But who really knows..

This is all I could find so far, from the City Council agenda:

    21. ORDINANCE deappropriating $444,064.90 from the TIRZ Affordable Housing Fund 2409 (Fund 2409) under Ordinance No. 2008-828 for the Temporary Emergency Home Repair Program (“TEHRP”) in connection with Hurricane Ike Damage; approving and authorizing guidelines for a New Credit Score Enhancement Program; reappropriating $386,390.00 from Fund 2409 to a New Credit Score Enhancement Program, including delivery costs; and reappropriating $57,674.90 to the TEHRP for Project Delivery Costs

  6. And now the HAR listing has changed - no interior photos anymore, and this is the text:

A long private drive leads to this fabulous 3+ acre lot located in the heart of exclusive Sherwood Forest. The heavily treed grounds create a beautiful park-like setting backing to a tributary of Carter Lake. This is truly a rare opportunity to create the estate of your dreams.

Also, the exterior photo of the home that is still on the listing has this description:

A long private drive leads to this fabulous 3+ acre lot located in the heart of exclusive Sherwood Forest. Photo shows previous home no longer in existence.

  7. Oh, and this was the house he built for Robert A. Mosbacher (who sold it to Giorgio Borlenghi in March 1979, who sold it to ALV Interests. Ltd. in October 2007).

    More on Borlenghi here: http://interfin.com/ManageDetail/CDetail_P...x?contentid=486

ALV Interests also recently bought the Gerhard Wurzer Gallery at 1217 S. Shepherd.

Here's an excerpt from Howard Barnstone's The Architecture of John F. Staub:

The style of the Mosbacher house is best described as as a cross between an American Georgian house and a Louisiana plantation house. The shuttered windows and shingled dormers recall the former, the slender brick piers and colonnades the latter. Staub introduced an irregularly spaced rear colonnade and Chippendale-like woodwork in lieu of conventional balusters. The colonnade, once carried along the entire rear elevation of the house, has since been abruptly terminated by the addition of an enclosed sitting room. In the front, Staub sought to vary the symmetry of the principal mass by placing the main entrance one bay off-center.
