Houston Post building at 610/59

I tried it for a late lunch today (around 2:30-3). It was pretty crowded and it was kind of awkward having to stand in line by the narrow rows of tables and it took an incredibly long time to get our food. I tried one of each, and they were pretty good - the mushroom one was the most interesting (mushroom/polenta cake?), and the french fries were really good (but I like 'em kinda squishy, and I think most people don't).

That's the restaurant operated by David Smith, the slumlord of the Ben Milam Hotel next door.
From another thread here, someone mentioned his refusal to sell alcohol and that it may be a bad idea for the success of the restaurant. That coupled with our deranged economy would make sense he couldn't keep it open...
I was in the area last weekend in the evening and noticed it looked like not much had been going on there...

I still think eliminating Saturday delivery is a decent option - not closing the post office, just no mail at your door.
While I maybe personally mail something less than five times per year, I mail things all the time at work. These things could be digitized in some way, but some folks prefer paper in hand or don't have the capabilities to accept large files (or anything) via the internet (like Red mentioned).
I think another price increase of stamps would be fair, but that will probably lead to even more people making the switch to other delivery methods.

Wasn't there a washateria near Westheimer and Baldwin?
It was used as a location for the movie "Rush".
There was a "Ye Ole Laundry and Cleaners" at 316 Tuam (and 305 was the old U Totem/Sunny's now):

You would think that a developer would replicate this sort of design, especially given the occupancy rate for 80 years. I've always seen this place from the outside, but had no idea it was so charming inside.
I wonder what the rent is like...and I'm sure Houston's typical developer would scoff at the craftmanship and say it's too expensive to reasonably replicate.

With all of the trouble these hotels have had in the past and in better financial times, we'll probably see places like the Savoy and Days Inn crumble on themselves (already starting) before anything happens.

I have no problems with succinctness, but giving the benefit of the doubt of the original post and the story hasn't been distorted, this particular action seems to warrant the attention:
He spotted our nanny looking out the window and immediately took off and jumped back over the front gate and into our neighbors front yard and then
disappeared.
In this case, and with all the other incidents, better safe than sorry?

Wow - the Meyerland Plaza picture is great. Mading's, Thornhill's cafeteria, and Meyer Bros...
Browsing through the other decades is really interesting, too...thanks for the link!

For now, it might be green space and parking:
For its part, owner Lamesa would much prefer to be building its complex, complete with plaza. Company representative Julie Tysor said that while construction is on hold, the firm is open to ideas for the site to have some “long-term benefit to the community.” For now, plans are under way to make the unpaved area a green space, and the paved area may be used for much-needed Village parking.

Something's up with that link, but here's the KTRK story:

Complete with artsy lens flare!
Was that taken with a camera phone?! It's not hard to take a picture better than that one (unless you're selling the lot and not the home...)

I doubt meter readers act in the manner the post describes...

I was reading about the huge postal money problems and how the Postmaster General is calling for Congress to end the annual rider that requires mail delivery six days per week. The following article says a day other then Saturday might be eliminated, but I wouldn't think the end of weekend mail would be so bad (okay, so I rarely get mail as it is...).

Thanks, that's perfect..
Just browsing a few high schools I could think of off the top of my head, I was surprised (in a bad way) at the various statistics!

Now Houston will be known as the place to go to get rid of your troubles.
If that's the general perception, it is one of ignorance.
As far as more protests, you're unfortunately right...

Like the above article mentioned, this was on the horizon for quite a while. I think the vote reflected the right thing to do at this point.
Oh, and thread title changed..

Well, I am on facebook as are some of my children, grandchildren and now pictures of two of my great-grandchildren. My friends and my family all use facebook to communicate. It is an ideal medium to keep in touch, even though I have a couple of blogs. As far as I am concerned, young people do not have a lock on facebook.
I agree - two years later it has really evolved. Heck, my job even has a profile

HCAD shows ownership of Richmont Square changing in '88 from Menil to Richmont Corp... Is Richmont Corp a menil-owned land holding company?
Also.. HCAD shows UST as owning some of the land the Menil is on. Is Menil-owned land and UST-owned land one and the same ?
Nothing named Richmont Corp shows up in the state of Texas corporation search..
Plus, why's the address on HCAD 400 Richmond (shouldn't it be 1400?)
...i just google mapped 400 Richmond and it put it at Loretto St.

20% of tv sets
I figured it might be a little more (who and where are these statistics coming from?), but everyone I practically know has cable (except me..)

I noticed last night that Fiesta had them too (~ $8 for regular, $12 for large). No idea about quality, though.
