  1. It would have been even more efficient if it were just a box.
  2. NASCAR? Yuk, we just need to get Indy Car and Le Mans back.
  3. BTW. What is evident is that the UH campus is nowhere near dense enough. All the buildings are pretty far from each other. They really need to do infill projects instead of building on the outskirts of campus. Good architecture happens when there are hard boundaries.
  4. I don't know who did it but the UH campus is done. And in bit mapped glory. Also so is the Med Center and Rice U. In fact all of Houston is looking pretty good. Check it out!
  5. The location was right in the neighborhood. I just an extra lot the developer had. Not on a major street and at the time not around any businesses.
  6. Pershing is very contemporary. The Y is an abomination Spanish colonial, complete with red tile roof. The Mcgovern Library is a beautiful piece of architecture, with a butterfly roof, that pays homage to all the mid century modern houses that surrounds it.
  7. The new Braes Heights fire station is finally going up. And from the look of the steel frame, its very contemporary. I'm glad. We don't need another stupid spanish colonial piece of crap life fire station 1. Its on Stella Link just south of Bellaire across from Pershing. That corridor is really shaping up to be a nice neighborhood. Only a few run down businesses remain. Nevermind, here is the rendering, its not as contemporary as I had imagined. Another fake red brick fire station. Looks like David Weekly designed it. Terrible.
  8. Michael Graves. I know he's not popular with architects now, but when I was at school, he was "cutting" edge. I still love his work and of course he was part of my youth, the same reason I listen to first wave on XM. http://michaelgraves.com/mga.htm
  9. The new versin of Atom is coming out in a few months. That will make the current stock of netbooks even cheaper. My advice is to get one with XP unless you're an uber-geek. XP netbooks are a bit more expensive but in my opinion well worth it for the average user. I have an HP Mini 1000 with a hard drive and XP. Works great. At work we have an EeePc with Unbuto(sp?) and its terrible.
  10. Uverse just added 4 new HD channels. Totally unannouced but am happy. Since I started with ATT, they have added ability to watch 2 HD channels, added whole house DVR, and added around 10 new HD channels, all totally invisible to me. The set top boxes are actually little windows based computers and ATT upgrades the software sometime in the early mornings.
  11. Houston doesn't need parks, all our houses have large enough yards. Compared to New York and LA.
  12. Time Warner sent you to a collection agency? Wow! Did it effect your credit rating?
  13. In our neighborhood, ATT put up a generator on the VRAD a few days after Ike hit. That's how they dealt with the city-wide power issue. Also I might add, that the Uverse DVR is 100x better than what comcast uses. Bigger hard drive, more intuitive interface, more info. I'm saving about $40/month by switching from comcast. I have U200 and 6Mb internet and its $100 for both. I was an early adopter so I got a pretty good deal, with the free DVR and cable box. I think its $5/box now.
  14. You really have it out for ATT don't you. You can check if Uverse is available at your exact address at the uverse website. If you qualify, you are eligible for their fastest internet speed, comcast and att cripple the capability of your speed depending on how much you want to pay. DSL is not slower. Uverse has been rock solid for me. Never has gone down. Super fast and a very low ping rate. Price is great too.
  15. I don't get why people think DSL/Uverse is slower than cable. Ummm, no, not at the rated speed that you pay for. I got Uverse soon after it was available because I hated comcast. I had dsl and with Uverse I'm saving about $40/month on a combined TV and internet. When I first signed up the promotion was for one month free service, so I signed up for the all the services including their highest internet speed of 10mb down. I tested it and it was exactly 10mb down. Then when I downgraded to the 6mb down speed after the first month, I tested it again and got exactly 6mb down. That's what you pay for that's what you get. I think the whole thing about people saying that dsl is slower than cable is that they believe the comcast commercials. I tested my connection using speakeasy as well as dsl reports.
  16. The Panamera is awkward looking in photos, but I'm sure that when it goes down the street it won't be mistaken for another make. And that's the idea behind it.
  17. Gut the inside and turn it into the world's largest dog park.
  18. Texas Woman's Hospital. Terrible hodge podge of brutal architecture.
  19. Heck ya, loved going to the Brass Parrot, it was my group of friends "secret" hang out, but please don't tell me that you consider the boardwalk a failure? That place is great, in fact, I wish Landrys would expand it. If you think its ruined now, then that's just evidence of self loathing. Note to all you high and mighty, just because its popular doesn't make it bad.
  20. Wow, why so defensive? And did I single you out when you didn't even respond to the OP?
  21. Why the hate for Landry's. Its the typical self loathing Houston mentality. That's why out of town businesses come here and take over from local businesses. I wish Houston kept and grew Randall's, Oshman's, Foley's, etc. I for one am hoping Landry's can keep its act together. Houston needs more companies that do business outside of Houston and bring profits home.
  22. Yup those are the ones. The Blair House is the last of the lower income apartments in that area. At first I'm sure everybody was for its destruction. Only problem is that the property value is so high that the only way to recoup the investment is to build high density apartments. They have built a similar development down just further south on Stella Link and N. Braeswood.
