  1. Indyman, If your daughter is happy at TSU and is determined to pursue her education, then it is not money wasted. College is what you make of it. Attending Harvard does not guarantee you anything, and attending TSU is not some life sentence to misery. My wife just graduated from TSU with a bachelors degree in December. She was pursued by many of the top accounting firms in the nation, and is now working for one of the world's biggest. She sits for the CPA exam in about 2 months. She has both good and bad things to say about TSU, probably just like any other graduate of any other school. Don't let anyone else's opinions detract you or your daughter from her goals. Let her make those decisions on her own. If she doesn't like the atmosphere at TSU, she has plenty of options. On the other hand, she may become a very proud alumnus of TSU. I graduated from UH myself, just two blocks from TSU. It never ceases to amaze me the comments I hear about the so-called "war zone" that is adjacent to parts of TSU and UH. In my experience, the reputation is much worse than what you'll find in reality. I've spent 10 of the last 17 years either spending all hours of the day at UH or living in my home just south of Third Ward. I've been out at all hours of the night, and never once felt threatened or unsafe. That's not to say you shouldn't watch your back, as you always should, but it's not the war zone it's made out to be.
  2. There was also a Tandy Leather, which I remember well from my days as a Boy Scout in the mid-80's. Pasadena Plaza was pretty much on its last legs at that point.
  3. Awesome, now no one has to "imagine" how much money I've saved over the years. Now we know for certain. I've probably saved at least $2.50 over the years. A penny saved is a penny earned. See you in Monte Carlo, bitches.
  4. I'm with memebag. I stick a Q-Tip in my ear about once every five years. I do dig around in my ears with my fingers every day, however. You can only imagine the money I've saved on Q-Tips over the years. Suckers...
  5. If you didn't find a home at Scooter's Icehouse, I can't help you. That was my home away from home for a few years when I lived on Dixie Farm Road back in the mid-90's. I had a lot of good times there...does anyone know if Billy still lives in the camper of the junked pick-up truck at the body shop next door? Sweet guy...we used to bring him home with us to stay in a warm house when it got too cold in the winters. I have a special place in my heart for Scooters. I can specifically remember the very first time I saw the place. It was early 1983, I was 10 years old and me and my grandma and cousin were headed down Telephone Road towards Corpus. We pulled up to the light, and as I looked to my right and I was intrigued by the name "Scooter's", Prince's new song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio...first time I'd ever heard it. For some reason, that one memory has stuck with me through the years. I later named a dog after that icehouse. The dog was as crazy as most of the regulars at Scooter's.
  6. Fireplaces were brought to Houston by the invading Yankee hordes of the 1970's. They showed up around the same time as bagels and Philly Cream Cheese.
  7. The roast beef po-boy was amazing. I might have to get one tonight!
  8. It was well before my time (before I was born), but as all loyal Cougar fans know, UH's Elmo Wright invented the end zone dance!!! As far as Astrodome memories, mine go back to watching the Astros with Jerry Mumphrey, Dickie Thon, Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz, Nolan Ryan, and many hundreds since then. I remember a hell of a game in the regular season between the Astros and Mets. Unless my memory is fooling me, it was Mike Scott vs. Dwight Gooden. My dad used to take me to tons of tractor pulls, mud bogs, demolition derbies, etc. Until I was in college, I probably saw more tractor pulls in the Dome than baseball games. I was there when the guy dropped from the ceiling of the Dome in a barrel and died.
  9. Right across the street from old Ming's is BB's Restaurant. I tried them out for the first time last week, and really enjoyed their po-boys. I've been hearing about them for quite some time now on the UH message boards. It's owned by Brooks Bassler, who played basketball and was also a high jumper at UH. Also comes from a very prodigious UH athletic family (dad and brother played football for UH, sister was a decathlete for UH.) Anyways, I really enjoyed their po-boys (tried the oyster and the roast beef), and I've heard good things about their gumbo. I was very disappointed in the bread pudding; it was one of the worst I've ever had. It was also fairly pricy...in the same range as eating at Niko Niko's, which is not exactly a cheap dining experience. Another plus for night owls, they're open late...till 4 am on the weekends, I believe until 2 am on Thursday night. They do serve beer and daiquiris.
  10. Funny, I've heard nothing but classic rock every time I'm in line at the Walgreen's at OST and Scott St. That would be kinda like playing nothing but hip-hop in the Belden's grocery store on Braeswood.
  11. I'm not at all affiliated with the Original Timmy Chan's Restaurant, or for that matter New Timmy Chan's #7, or Jimmy Chan's, or Chicken Chan. SUPRISE!
  12. Add me to the "this sucks" list. Ming's had become my favorite Chinese place. I just ate there last week...and finished the leftovers this weekend! OK memebag, where's Kam's? I guess I've also got more reason to try 888 now.
  13. Sounds like the start of a memorable evening on the toilet...
  14. Real grapefruit juice (not that grapefruit cocktail BS) Dr. Pepper Cranberry juice (to "detoxify") Sonic's Cherry Limeade
  15. Sorry to resurrect this one...I was just remembering my last trip to Surfside Beach, which was 2 weeks ago. You all would be very pleased to know that the water was very near crystal clear that day. I could stand in neck deep water and still see my feet. The surf was also nearly glass-smooth. One line of "breakers", about 15 feet off the beach. Definitely lends creedence to the statement that our local beaches' water color is affected by suspended sediment. There was no sediment (or very, very, very little sediment) in the water 2 weeks ago. Much better than my previous trip to Surfside about 6 weeks ago, where I decided to surf in my kayak for the first time. There were at least 4 lines of breakers and overhead waves. I had fun, but damn it was rough.
  16. You do have another option on Friday mornings: "Listening Back with Myron Anderson" on KTSU. Great way to start a Friday. "Listening Back" is in a tight race with the "Blues and Hi-Fi" show on KTRU (Wednesday nights) for the best radio show in Houston, in my opinion.
  17. Funny you mention that; my wife and I have been talking about going to Steak and Ale for months. Specifically the Steak and Ale at Almeda Mall, that I've driven by at least tens of thousands of times in my life without ever stepping foot inside. Neither of us had ever been into a Steak and Ale, but there's something attractive and secretive about them. We wondered what goes on behind those stained glass doors... Unfortunately we were too late...unless someone knows of a Steak and Ale that's still in bidness!
  18. DVR...skip commercials and the junk stories. I watch the weather, the sports, and a few select news stories that look interesting. You find the hyped news to be annoying, yet you watch Channel 2?!? You must be one frustrated person! Channel 2 has long been the most superficial of all local news stations.
  19. It's hard not to be a conspiracy-theorist on higher education funding when you remember what happened back in 2004. If you'll recall, the presidents of UH and Texas Tech worked the state legislature for several years to get "excellence funding" to help move those two universities forward towards "Tier I" status. After their years of hard work, UH and TT were rewarded by the state lege with something like $17 million per year for two years ($6 million for Texas Tech and $11 million for UH each year for two years is what I recall). Those "excellence funds" to UH and TT were promptly vetoed by Gov Rick Perry, citing the state budget deficit. However, Perry turned around and 3 months later and awarded $50 million of "discretionary funds" to UT-Dallas as a "Business Enterprise Fund" to spur business development. As the legendary Bill Yeoman says, "It's hard being a Cougar."
  20. What happened to the good old days when a man could live in a trailer park AND be lazy?!? You know, I've known some trailer park residents who really are earth-friendly. They don't send any garbage to the landfill...it stays in their front yard!
  21. The two or three times I've eaten at Bennigan's I had the opposite reaction. It was, "I'm paying $7.00 for this crap?!?" I would much rather spend $5 at Whataburger or $4 at a taqueria.
  22. I'm loyal to Channel 26 news, since they have the only sportscaster in town (Mark Berman) who seems to know where the University of Houston campus is. Second place is Channel 13, because of Dave Ward and Gina Gaston.
