  1. Since I've been outed...it's not the Catholic priests that bothered me, it's the fact that they're white. I HATE WHITE PEOPLE!!!
  2. Actually, the drug violence in Mexico is a result of the USA's serious drug problem. My opinion of these things is that as long as you're not involved in anything illegal across the border, it's just as safe as the US. Murders usually aren't random. Having said that, my last trip to Mexico involved a drug transaction last year...a 20-yard swim across the Rio Grande at the Big Bend Hot Springs to buy $10 of weed to enjoy up in the Chisos. If you're going to do international drug deals, keep them small to reduce the risk of violence.
  3. I noticed that there weren't nearly as many streets participating this year. I fear it could be that the original homeowners who started the tradition are dying off. Our neighborhood is just south of Scott Terrace, and just in the 5 years I've lived here, probably 10 of the original homeowners on our block have passed on. There are only a handful left, and they're all in their upper 80's or 90's. One of the ladies that died last year was over 100. Strange thing is that the year I moved in, the last remaining "original" man passed on, leaving a street full of widows. I started taking my vitamins and walking carefully from that point forward.
  4. MISFITS - "Mommy, Can I Go Out & Kill Tonight?" Maybe it's just the 3-month Christmas season getting to me...
  5. A-1 Mobile Homes (plus a few others): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUptNeDoJno Superior Waterbeds (plus a few others): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaP626apdqE
  6. Did Alfred's later become Alfreda's Cafeteria? I never took the opportunity to eat there (Alfreda's), but I understand it was good eats. Obviously Alfred's had an amazing reputation as well.
  7. If land values if Midtown justified it, I'm sure Stewart would be more than happy to build a multi-level "showroom" and sell off part of their land for a profit. Apparently land values in Midtown aren't there yet. It's pretty obvious that the demand for property on Main Street isn't very high.
  8. I think the name change is appropriate. It will give UH-D its own identity, which should be separate from UH. Over the last few weeks I've come around to the "City University of Houston" idea. I think the name would help convey the UH System's desire to make the distinction between the University of Houston as a national research university, and the "City University of Houston" as a more locally-centered school.
  9. I saw a comedian there in 1991 or 1992(?)...the one and only time I went in there. There wasn't much reason to go that direction when I was at UH. We didn't start playing football there until the year I graduated. We mainly used Robertson Stadium as a place to play...get high on top of the press box, climb the ROTC climbing wall, and jump off the concrete rafters into the big pads they had below.
  10. 77021. We're in South Union...it could fit all your criteria. Depends on your personal comfort level...it's perfectly safe, but speaking honestly, I know plenty of white people who just aren't comfortable around blacks. It is what it is. You could buy a house AND a vacant lot next door for a nicer-sized yard. Price of course depends on the size you're looking for. On our street we've got the original 2 bed/1 bath 800 sf homes, and we've got 4000 sf homes with 3-car garage. Original homes are over 60 years old now, and most need help. Best help for many of them would be to tear them down. I think the drive would fit your range...just depends on where in the Galleria area you're talking about, and whether or not you have to get on the West Loop. If you can avoid that, you can get just about anywhere in town (inside 6/1960) within 30 minutes.
  11. I was young, but I remember the names Sage and Globe. If Sage was at Monroe, then Globe must have been the one at Airport and the Gulf Fwy. I recall eating at the Sambo's in the parking lot on a few occasions (now a Denny's I think). My only memories of Globe are being entranced by a bunch of pachinko machines on the shelves. I think that Globe became a Sam's for a while before turning into the Flea Market that it's been for the last decade or so.
  12. Interesting...looks like it was located about where the pipe yard is now, just across the South Loop from my neighborhood. Current aerials don't show any sign of a landing strip. If it was paved (or even gravel), I wonder if it became part of either the South Loop or the pipe yard? Anyone know of a website for historic aerials?
  13. Buy big-ass water and food bowls, and an extra kitty litter box. Cats are self-sustaining. Dogs are another story.
  14. Obviously you've never been to Notrees!!! It's the most aptly-named town in America!
  15. Hey that Burger King is very nostalgic to me! That's where I had my first Mustard Whopper! Also where I ate my first and only Whaler!!! Those were the days when it was a treat to go "out to eat" at a Burger King! Now it's an all-too-often occurence.
  16. Enforce the Texas Open Beaches Act. That goes for the entire Texas coast, not just Galveston Island. Also...stop throwing away money on beach "replenishment" that sometimes lasts no more than a year. You're not going to solve the sand-loss problem by throwing more sand on the beach. The gulf currents are taking more sand than they're leaving...and pumping sand from offshore is just taking sand away from the supply that would naturally be replenishing the beach. Other than that...no changes to the city itself.
  17. Check www.tsarp.org for 723 Worthshire. The entire property is in the 100-yr floodplain, half the site's in the floodway. Not only is the property in the floodplain, but it appears to be deep in the floodplain. According to the TSARP website, existing ground elevations are approximately elevation 47'-48', with a 100-yr floodplain elevation of 53' in that area. That puts the property 5'-6' deep in the floodplain. I guess that's a little easier to live with if you're on the 2nd floor, not so good on the ground floor or for cars in the parking lot. The floodway designation could become problematic in the future...according to current COH floodplain regs, for any structure in the floodway that suffers damages that exceed 50% of the market value of that structure, the entire structure must be brought to compliance with the current floodplain regs. In essence, that would require the townhomes to be rebuilt on pier and beam foundation and elevated nearly 10' above ground, and there would be some drainage/detention/floodplain mitigation improvements required.
  18. I've never seen a cop there. In my younger days I used to hit up the Lone Star every once in a while. Unless the clientele has changed, most of the patrons were blue-collar, homeless, or just got off the bus from Huntsville. Usually an interesting crowd there. If you like to play pool, I recommend going somewhere else.
  19. Whataburger...#1 with jalapenos, no picklz and a Dr Pepper. I cannot be out-Whataburgered. BTW, Best Whataburger in Texas? The one on S Staples, right across the street from their corporate HQ in Corpus!!! Close 2nd would be the Whataburger By the Bay, cause it's got an elevator and gift shop...and a nice view of the bay. Gotta admit, though...ever since I finally got over my lifelong distaste for hot dogs last year, JCI is a close 2nd to Whataburguesa.
  20. Not to mention, the Westpark and Katy Toll Roads were in motion well before Emmett took office. Those things were in motion 10 years ago, they're not something Ed Emmett just put together in the last year. I like the job Ed Emmett's doing. He was one of the handful of Republicans I voted for yesterday.
  21. You mean the Mills Corp BOUGHT out the other company, not BEAT out. I recall from newspaper articles at the time (1998 or so?) that the way it went down was that the two mall developers were both moving full steam ahead on their respective sites (Katy Mills and Simon). The experts agreed that only one mall would actually get built. The Simon mall actually broke ground first and appeared to have the advantage... ...next thing you know Katy Mills bought out (or bought into) the Simon property and shut it down. Pretty interesting stuff. From what I know, the Simon site has been proposed as a mall since the mid-1970's. It will be developed eventually...maybe not the mall that was originally intended, but it will be developed.
  22. Here's a pretty good representation of Atomic: I always wanted a dog with his own theme song. Bow-wow-wow-yippee-yo-yippee-yay!
