  1. My example is the lack of big deals. With the exception of resignings, since Purpura has been GM, we've signed four supposed big ones...Aubrey Huff (From Tampa Bay: now on free agency and waiting to be resigned), Preston Wilson (let go by the Astros and helped our arch-rival Cardinals win the World Series), and Carlos Lee/Woody Williams (we don't know how they'll do with the Astros yet so I won't judge). So prior to this offseason, he's made one good sign, and he may leave the Astros after his first season here? If we had the same team we had last season, resigned all our free-agents, and only signed Lee and Williams, that alone could be a rotation offensive and defensively more powerful than any team in MLB. Obviously that won't happen now with Petitte leaving. Here's the bright side though: All is not lost for Purpura this offseason. Clements, Jeff Suppan, Barry Zito, and Jeff Weaver are starting pitcher free-agents available without a trade. Signing any of them would show that Purpura and McClain are serious about wanting a strong pitching rotation. Also, decide the third base thing quick. I think Huff will be a solid offensive man in the coming years. Ensberg has shown promise and is a former All-Star. Whatever you do, if you decided to trade Ensberg, it better be for another All-Star caliber dude, and DON'T to it before signing Huff.
  2. I disagree. Purpura's to blame. I bet U if Hutsinger were still GM, Pettite would have signed with the 'Stros for $14 million. They seem to have a negotiation problem. All these big stars during the offseason say the same thing: Houston is an attractive place to play because of the fans, salary offers, and the stadium is hitter-friendly, but never seem to get it done when it comes to offering options and no-trade clauses. I'm sure McLane had no problem offering $14 Million for Petitte, especially knowing that the chances for resigning Clements was higher. Purura's problem is that when there's a good deal accepted, he tries to make it an even better deal and get more out of it for the 'Stros, and as a result, the good deals pass him by.
  3. I agree. Also, if this news is true, expect a major trade by the Astros for another star pitcher...which means giving up valuable talent. What other free agent star pitchers are left on the market? And when will the Astros start looking at Japan's star pitchers? That's where we really need to go. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4389076.html Here's the Chronicle article. Listen to what Pettitte's agent said...
  4. ESPN has just announced breaking news that Andy Pettitte has just signed with the New York Yankees
  5. From the Chicago Tribune: Taveras, who turns 25 on Dec. 25, is one of the fastest players in baseball. He stole 33 bases, had a 30-game hitting streak and batted .278 last season. The kid has potential. Like I said before, his 30-game hitting streak shows that. All he needs is more coaching and hitting practice so he could be consistant throughout next season. I don't think we've had a player as fast as him since Kenny Lofton. Biggest thing we could use from him is his speed. Can't think of any other Astro who has his speed to steal bases. I also heard a rumor that we were pursuing Peavy from the San Diego Padres. Is the Astros top priority resigning Pettitte/Clements, finding another starting pitcher, or improving the Astros' offense?
  6. Willy was second place as Rookie of the Year, and yea, had that 30-game hitting streak going on. He had a little slump at the end, but his hitting skills are unquestionable. When on base (which I think he'll do well next year), he could almost be a guaranteed run with Berkman and Lee at 3 and 4. I also don't like the fact that trading Tavaras for Garland may result in us not being able to sign Pettitte, Clements, or Huff next year. It's almost like we're giving up four stars instead of one.
  7. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4385643.html Why on earth would the Astros claim to want to improve their offense and improve their team, then want to trade a future star like Willy Taveras? He's the fastest player on their team. It's like they're going 2 steps forward, 3 steps back...
  8. Check this out from FoxSports. They claim that if the Texans replaced Carr, the likely next QB for the Texans could be Jake Plummer?... Texans QB David Carr has a month to prove something, and it must be something big. If he fails, Gary Kubiak will have to consider the David Carr Experiment one that blew up in his face. But while Kubiak won't be able to do it all over again, he does have Plummer's phone number in Denver. He knows how badly Kansas City Chiefs backup Damon Huard wants to start again. And Kubiak's office isn't far from where Houston Cougars star Kevin Kolb became a hometown hero in his own right. Posted December 06, by Ben Maller
  9. I don't think coaching or front office are the problem. I can see Kubiak doing big things as a coach (mainly because of his past with Denver). I DON'T see Kubiak doing big things with this current roster, though. They're gonna have to make some MAJOR changes and get players that can make an IMMEDIATE impact to coincide with Ryans, Williams, Johnson, and Carr. The line on both sides needs the most help.
  10. Prior to the past game against the Raiders, Carr had one of the highest QB ratings in the NFL. Also, with the exception of Peyton Manning, I can't think of any starting QB that hasn't had a bad game this season. y'all are talking as if Carr is the only reason why the Texans are 4-8.
  11. I thought universities paid for their own new stadiums
  12. Well, he's not a rookie anymore. After 5 years, this is when U'll probably start seeing his true form. I consider Yao Ming a Rockets veteran, and he's been in the NBA for four years. Regardless of how good or bad you play, there's no such thing as a 5-year rookie. Either you can play or you can't. And if you're still playing like a rookie at year-five, who's to say you're not still gonna be playing as a rookie in year-ten etc.? And if he's still the best player on the team at that time and playing like that, that says a lot about the team. I think (and hope) he just had a bad day, and shows what a star-quarterback is supposed to play like in the next game. If the Texans lost, he would have been called to blame. He should come back, though.
  13. I agree 100%. Also, if it wouldn't work for the Texans, Rockets, or Astros to build in the boondocks instead of the popular central locations of Relaint or Downtown, it definately woulnd't work for Dynamo. Just common sense. They don't have the luxury of taking a risk of losing fans when they currently average less than 25,000 in attendance. They claim to be a professional franchise; here's their chance to prove it. They need to develop the market. If they wanna take a financial risk, Dynamo should invest lots of money into youth leagues and getting more people involved. When Robertson starts selling out, they then should look into stadium locations...
  14. They're not the Boston Patriots; They're the New England Patriots. Foxboro, Mass is in New England, so they're cool... They play in Anaheim. Using Los Angeles in their name at all is cheap, but since Anaheim is in their name, they're cool too. They were also cool when they were the California Angels. It has nothing to do with the distance from downtown; it has to do with representing the city/area that you claim to play for, and not just calling them another city's name to sell t-shirts. If Arlington's willing to fork out the cash for the Dallas Cowboys, call them the Arlington Cowboys or something that represents the Metroplex or state. I think we agree that Washington/Maryland and NYC/New Jersey lose MAD cool points in that regard, and Buffalo's lost a few as well. If the Houston Texans were to move out to Stafford, call them the Stafford Texans. And if you didn't want to play for Stafford, leave your ass in Houston...
  15. Also, they're now known as the Arizona Cardinals, instead of the Phoenix Cardinals like in the early 90s, so they slide.
  16. To the toilet bowl? That's a HORRIBLE thing to say about the 'Boys, mate
  17. Look at this guy So I'll give U credit with not adding minor league teams on the list, but professional sports too?! Since when have basketball and soccer not counted as sports? Let's REALLY compare... -Let's see, the Houston Comets have won 4 titles in the 10 years of the WNBA, one less than the 5 Super Bowls the Irving Cowboys have for the past 45 years. Is that the reason why U wouldn't wanna count basketball? -Houston Dynamo win the MLS Cup...on FC Dallas's turf. Is that why U don't wanna count soccer? -The Rockets won 2 championships when Michael Jordan wasn't playing. The Mavericks have won 00000 championships when Michael Jordan wasn't playing. Hmmmmm.... -Best thing to happen to the Astros was winning the pennant. Best thing to happen to the Rangers was when the former owner became President, which has nothing to do with baseball. -The Texans still haven't had .500 season yet, but still manage to beat the Cowboys in their first game? -Dallas Stars: they're cool. Won a Stanley Cup....the only professional championship ever won in Dallas. We Rick James. U Charlie Murphy....
  18. U think V. Young was overrated at UT? But you right about the one good game thing. Remeber guys, Carr WON his first NFL regular season game with an expansion team. It's just bound to go downhill from there
  19. In the words of Big & Rich: "Save a boob, Ride the Timberlake..."
  20. Ah yes. The most memorable halftime show of all time right here in Houston. Thanx, Janet!
  21. Actually, I say Ohio State 4 realz! The Buckeyes are a well-oiled machine, with strong linemen and coaching on both sides. The Texans have a first-year head coach whose staff are still trying to adapt, plus the team is just starting a building process. Hate to say it, but the Buckeyes are way more experienced with each other than the Texans are. I say over half their team is NFL ready, too.
