  1. I have a suggestion for the Cowboys: Have Parcells coach another two or three years, then when he were ready, pursue Bill Cowher as the new Cowboys coach. Offer a record contract. After Parcells leaves (everyone has to leave sometime), the Cowboys will need a coach with attitude and just pure rage. Cowher has that fire. Don't hire another Dave Campo.
  2. Do you think Major Applewhite of Rice has what it takes to eventually be an offensive coordinator in the NFL? Yeah, he's 28, but he really stands out as a coordinator in my opinion. He just got contacted this week to possibly join the staff of Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban as you know just quit his Miami Dolphin's job for 'Bama. What if Applewhite were a quarterback coach for the Texans? At the same time, learn the role of offensive coordinator and eventually move up to that spot in a few seasons?
  3. True that, but how many people would stay in school an extra year knowing that they'd get a better chance at getting paid MORE millions the next year? > Okay, all jokes aside; the Cowboys season was done on Thanksgiving. They just look like they ran out of gas. I was surprised the Cowboys made the playoffs, but they earned that right because of their mid-season play. The Texans look like they have more hope next season than the 'Boyz in my opinion. And what was up with that work "improbable?" The Seahawks are a better and more solid team that the 'Boyz. Where's the shock? Last season, the Seahawks won the NFC and made t to the Super Bowl. Where were the Boyz? Dallas is an offseason of successful free-agency from being a solid team, but signing Owens in the offseason isn't enough. Blame him all you want, but people need to remember that this was Romo's first season, and that will equal lack of experience. He'll be great, but he still needs work. Also, the last draft wasn't bad; just risky. If we have a successful draft and focus on OL more than QB, I also expect the Texans to have a better record than the Boyz next season. The problem isn't the fact that Carr is QB. The problem is the fact that we depend too much on Carr/QB. There should be more answers/options. Stronger OL, develop a strong rushing game, AND develop a strong passing game. Create options. New Orleans has that. We have the capability with our current talent to add a small amount of players that could develop into that next season. Depth is key.
  4. I just don't understand why after just one year at Robertson, Dynamo would already consider a permanent 25K stadium, especially considering the fact that larger soccer events would probably still be held at Reliant instead. If I were them, I'd move to Reliant Stadium after the Robertson Stadium lease were up in a couple years. Buy some time and assess where professional sports in Houston stands. Sign perhaps a five-year lease with Reliant. After two years at Reliant, THEN start looking for stadium locations and renderings. MLS in Houston doesn't have as high an attendance as the NFL or MLB obviously, it does beat out NBA, WNBA, and hockey because of seat availability. But it's too much of a variable to assess how big a stadium to build for Dynamo to stay for at least 20 years. Here's another variable: What happens if/when MLS becomes a success in the next couple years? During this off-season, MLS announced that they could be courting some of soccer's biggest draws to the league, including players like Ronaldino, Beckham, and Henry. Household names in the world of sports. Remember when Barcelona and Club America had that exibition at Reliant Stadium? Sold out. Somewhere between 65-70K in Houston. If and when MLS were capable of selling out like that everynight at their 25K stadiums, and with Houston looking to build a stadium but are capable AT THAT TIME of averaging at least 40-45K at Reliant, we'd be the ones setting the standard in American sports instead of following the 25K high school trend. We'd be able to build a 50K stadium with a guarantee that every side would make a profit instead of building a 25K one without knowing when the sport would be respected as the rest of the world does. Money well saved and money well spent. We also have to remember three things: 1) Dynamo at one point would have sold for $10 Million. Now, they're getting offers of $30 Million. The league is growing. 2) The team is still owned for now by AEG. Hopefully, that won't be permanent. Before even considering a stadium, it should have a local owner first. 3) We still have a number of stadiums that are costing taxpayer money as is. If AEG were to propose a stadium this year, the stadium will just be a ripoff of the others. As I said before, they need to build the market in Houston before anything else.
  5. It's the other way around. Vince Young is Vince Young because of the coaches he's had since Madison. The Longhorns' recruiting program is just phenomenal as well. Every QB under Brown has started in the NFL or became a coach of some kind in college. Colt McCoy's no fluke either; he's probably gonna be a top-10 draft pick should he stay three more years at UT. And QB aside, his offense and defensive depth is the total package. Brown's staff knows how to make good players great and will make more NFL ready graduates. Meyer can coach, but isn't a national champion yet. Carroll and Tressel however have a strong arguement going though. And when I think Carroll, I think Leinart, White, and Bush. What makes Brown stand out between the other two though is the amount of high school recruiting and scouting success he has with Texas high school football; the best high school football on earth hands down. Yo TJones, should the Texans get the question of depth, protection, and good OC answered, I agree that they may be in the playoffs next season.
  6. I hope Russell stays in school and goes for a National Championship for his own sake. He does sound like a good player, but he sounds like he can be better and can prove a lot more. Go for the Heismann, yo. Young and Bush both have National Championships on their resumes, and were #1 and #2 on the Heismann race. Russell could make himself a lot more marketable if he stays one more year at LSU and gets more college hardware to his name. If he were in the draft, he'd also be a great pick-up, but definately not starter. If we drafted Russell, we'd have the luxury of having Carr start, and Russell having a smoother transition to NFL football. Vince Young didn't have that luxury because the Titans got rid of McNair, but he did well anyway because he's Vince Young: Texas Longhorns' Vince Young. Best coaching staff in college football, hands down. Look at Matt Leinart. He was SUPPOSED to be the backup to Kurt Warner, but Warner decided not to eat his Wheaties during the offseason, and Leinart was thrown into the lion's den. Man, the Cardinals sucked when you compare the record to the amount of talent they have. But Leinart would be better if he had at least a season to learn the position. That's what Russell could use once he gets to the NFL, but he'll probably get drafted to a team with an earlier pick who's looking for a QB.
  7. In other news, the Yankees traded Randy Johnson to the Diamondbacks. Also, Aubrey Huff, who we should have tried to re-sign, just signed a $20 million deal to become the new left-fielder for the Baltimore Orioles.
  8. He sure doesn't look like a player who would be on the bench. I was thinking his signing was to go with the posibility that he could eventually replace Biggio at 2nd once he decided to retire, but it's only a 1-year contract. The move brings the Astros depth, but also a lot of questions as to who will be permanent starters. If Ensberg has an All Star year again, Everett's powerhouse shortstop defense stays on top, Berkman's still on top, and Biggio guaranteed at second, what will Loretta do with the infield? Could he become an outfielder to replace Taveras?
  9. Yeah. Vince Young's not available in this draft. Can't think of any QBs in this draft capable of making that same or better impact as he did for the Titans. Agree 100% Jake could be a backup for David Carr; not the other way around. You'd need a much better veteran QB to come in if you wanted to replace Carr as starter. But Carr and Plummer would be a good answer for QB depth. I think Quinn's overrated because he's Notre Dame, but that's just me. He hasn't proven that much to me. I can't see him pulling a Young and winning Offensive Rookie Of the Year. Even so, I don't expect him to be available for the Texans to fall for the hype with the 8th pick in the draft. And if he or ANY QB other than Troy Smith is drafted by the Texans, they need to be backup, not starter.
  10. Once again I disagree. The Texans' need depth on both sides of the ball more than they need a new QB. They need better pass protection. They need a new offensive coordinator to replace the one going to Air Force that can create gutsy plays when they're needed (i.e. Boise State against Oklahoma. y'all see that?!) Case in point. I don't think Carr is a worse QB than Rex Grossman. Carr has a better arm, gets more done on the field, and has more potential than Grossman in my opinion. But the Bears are in the playoffs and the Texans aren't. Why? The Bears are a COMPLETE team. The starters are strong, the secondary is strong, and the coaching staff has a lot to work with. Getting a new QB will not be a quick fix for the Texans in my opinion. Regardless of who we have as QB, we need a better OL first. I bet you if Carr were the Bears QB with the team they have, they'd still make the playoffs because they're a total-package team. The Eagles as well. The Texans need to build to become a total package.
  11. The Texans need to work on their depth and go on a shopping spree in free-agency. I wouldn't cut anyone until training camp '007 when I knew what they'd be bringing in the regular season. Trade one of your backs for a pick; don't just cut him just yet. If Carr wants to win, he won't care if he's starter or backup. In that case, go for Plummer and have the two fight in the offseason for the starter job. That way, we don't have to waste our draft pick on a QB (which should have been done last season if ever at all). Congrats to Young for winning Offensive Player of the Year, by the way. Congrats to Mario Williams for...um...helping us win six games. I do think he'll be a great player in his position, but his position needs more power beside him. D. Williams had over a year to recover from surgery, so he'll be in playing shape. If he isn't, he shouldn't be playing football at all. If Portis can play, then yeah, switch those two out as well. Once again, depth. The Texans are in NO position to rely on one guy for one position. No one is capable of being consistant on the Texans yet except Ryans and Johnson, and if either get injured, then what? The Texans have more than enough money to spend. They're one of the top 10 richest teams in American sports. If they make it to the playoff, they very well could get back into the top three-five. I'm tired of them taking chances in the draft, but Kubiak not taking chances on the field. The coaches and players need more confidence in each other, because that was lacking this season. One more thing: I wanna see the Texans go out on a limb for their offensive coordinator. They should try pursuing Jim Mora. Yeah, he may try pursuing a head coaching spot with the Cardinals, Steelers (if Cowher doesn't come back), or Dolphins (Nick Saban announced today he's going to Alabama). I don't care. Either that, or get a head coach from college that's not conservative 50% of the time. But that should be top priority. 2nd priority: Protection on both sides of the ball. 3rd: Depth.
  12. The Texans would be stupid if they didn't try to keep both. What do you do now; depend on Davis/Williams? That's part of the reason why we didn't draft Bush in the first place. If Davis/Williams (and I call him that because there's another Williams on the team) is healthy enough to return, he shouldn't even be starting yet; that spot belongs to Dayne for now. Get D. Williams to work his way in instead of blowing his knee within the 1st quarter of the season. Neither D. Williams or Dayne are capable of playing a full game. They need to switch each other out.
  13. You really think QB is the priority and should be wasted with the Texans' 1st round pick? If I were the Texans, here's my priority list... 1) Find a new offensive coordinator. The one we have is going to Air Force, and perhaps we could use that spot on another former head coach like we did Mike Sherman as defensive coordinator. We need a coordinator who's capable of taking chances and completing them with his plays. Jim Mora and Dennis Green were both fired today as head coaches; both in my opinion would be much more effective as coordinators than head coaches. 2) In the draft, we need better pass protection, DL, and OL. They've improved a lot from last year, but it still needs a lot of work. Our runningbacks have a lot of potential. If there's no Reggie Bush or Vince Young sure-thing type RBs or QBs available, Beef up the protection and depth. 3) If a QB is a need, get a quality veteran on the bench like Garcia or Plummer. If Carr doesn't have a 1st quarter, get the backup in immediately, and let him stay as the starter until Carr gets his game back at practice. Carr had a decent season. Even when he had a good game and the Texans lost, the Houston media seemed to blame him more than the Texans lack of depth. David Carr in my opinion is only as good as his coordinator, and if he can't start next year, Carr needs to be a backup. The biggest mistake the Texans could do is get rid of Carr without bringing in two quality, proven QBs. I don't think Rosenfels should be the only quality backup available. Have him fight for the backup spot. The Texans' biggest weakness is lack of depth.
  14. I think Parcells has done a good job. He's more of an old-school, experience-over-new blood kinda dude, and I don't think that sat too well for Cowboys fans that wanted Romo to start when Bledsoe started at the beginning of the season. The Owens distraction was over-rated. He didn't keep the 'Boys out the playoffs.
  15. The Cowboys have a chance to redeem themselves in the playoff, but man does that look like a collapse. They should have been division champs this season in my opinion, and it should have been Philly with the wild-card. Congrats to them for making the playoffs, but they've under-achieved so far. Regardless of what happens in the post-season, they need to add a piece or two during the offseason to be Super Bowl contenders. They lost the division title by losing the last two games to their division rival and the worst team in football? I think they'll have a good 2007, but they need to start off the season better than they did this year. I'm curious how Owens will do, but Romo should be the focal point if he's as good as he was prior to the Eagles' game. Texans, what can I say. Hats off to 'em. They finish the season with their second-best record in franchise history, ended up beating the Colts for the first time ever, end the season with back-to-back wins for the first time since 2004, and redeemed themselves after their most embarassing loss in their history (Titans). They have a lot to build off of. The defense has a LOT of potential in 2007. Offense also shows a lot of promise, but either the QB or the OL needs more work. Think about it this way: Last year, the Cowboys were 9-7 and the Texans were 2-14. The Cowboys won seven games more than the Texans in 2005. This year, the Cowboys still finished 9-7 while the Texans finish at 6-10, meaning the Cowboys finish with three more wins than the Texans this season.
  16. It has to be natural grass for professional soccer. It's just FIFA and MLS rules. When played at Reliant, it's still natural; not astroturf. I like the Astrodome idea as well, but since Astrodome Redevelopment has the upper hand for the time being, chances of that happening are not so strong. I say keep the Dome's size and make it the largest soccer-specific stadium in the U.S. if that were the location. Sure, it would probably be a few years before the Dynamo would be able to sell out a stadium that size by itself, but the Dome could be a multi-purpose track and field stadium. The Dome would sell out anytime the major soccer events like European tours and major Cups were there, and we know that because of the trends we've seen at Reliant. We could also push for the track and field world championships. Question is if the stadium could be revamped in a way that looks as good as the hotel renderings.
  17. I think if Garcia were guaranteed a starting spot at his age, he'd take it. He won't be on the field when McNabb's healthy. Or perhaps he could become a mentor to Carr as both battled out for the QB spot week after week. There would probably be no QB excuses for loss if McNair offered a lum sum for him.
  18. I say draft the highest DE or OL in the first round again. With all the standout QBs more than likely being the first 3 or 4 drafted, and quite a few WR available, I think the Texans will be left with the highest DEs in the draft. If there's a standout WR available, yeah, get'em. I'm not sure if that guy will be available though. We'll probably be #8, possibly double-digits in the draft depending on if we beat the Browns and how other teams fare this last weekend. The Texans are going to need a LOT of pass and rush protection next season to accomodate Carr, our current WRs, and RBs. We also need much more improvement on defense. Talent and skill seem to be there now for the Texans, but their protection needs improvement, and pass coverage looked non-existant 50% of the time. When it was there, it was impressive. That needs to be much more consistant.
  19. The Texans beat 'em for a reason. Colts were playing for a high playoff spot against a team they've never lost to, and quite frankly, they underestimated how Houston would come out. The Texans, however, were playing for their jobs. They HAD to prove they had the personel to beat a quality playoff contender. Prior to the Colts, we beat the Jags twice, the Dolphins, and the Raiders. That was it. And we supposedly drafted Williams because we wanted to be "capable" of beating Manning and the Colts. I think Indy's defense wa exposed, and they have no choice but to improve it. They know Dayne exposed their weakness. But I think Peyton and the Colts are hungrier than any other team in the playoff because everyone's already ridden them out of considering them to be able to win in the post-season, the same way people never thought the Texans would be able to beat the Colts this season. I think Manning's offense will be high-scoring, and the defense will do everything they can to keep opponents within field-goal range, but that's it. Dungy's gonna find a way to win with what he has against the AFC teams this post-season. Like I said, Indy was exposed this past week, but at least they know their weakness. Some of these other teams may not have an off-playing day until playoff time when it's too late. The Eagles are a well oiled machine, and I thought they would win the Super Bowl when I saw HOW they beat the Texans on opening day. No one on the Eagles took the Texans for granted. McNabb was healthy and the team was just loose. Now, Garcia's sitting in for McNabb, but the team is still loose and not taking anything for granted. And their DL is just ridiculous. y'all saw when the Cowboys were on the 1-2 yard line, and how the Eagles were able to collapse them for 4 straight downs? That wasn't a fluke team they beat like that; the Cowboys can play. I think the Bears are the best team in football this season, but the Eagles have the best style of play when it comes to taking nothing for granted and being a blue-collar winner. I don't know Davis' future, but the Texans have a decent group of WR. Anyone in mind you're talking about in terms of another WR we should draft?
  20. My prediction at the beginning of the year was Eagles beating the Colts in the Super Bowl, and I'm sticking to it.
  21. At one point, Carr was #1 in the QB ratings. Was that a fluke? The problem I have with the Chronicle and a lot of the critique on Carr is the fact that a lot of fans seem to reflect the Texans' winning and losing solely on Carr. It simply isn't the case. Case in point: Texans vs. Raiders. The Texans won the game, but from what I heard (I didn't see the game) it was Carr's worst game of his career. From the other games I saw this season, Carr was consistant as an individual. When the Texans had a weak side (offense or defense), they were always exploited, especially when it came to defense pass coverage. Carr's biggest problem in my opinion is the fact that he's only consistant because he's a conservative QB. He and Kubiak didn't do enough this season to take chances. Not enough confidence shown between each other. Vince Young had a great year this year because of the confident plays between Young and Fisher where neither felt pressure and everything revolved around the trust in the O-Line. Same with Brees, McNabb, and Romo. No pressure to try trick plays. Carr partially helped win over the Colts because of a burst of confidence in his play when he passed for the last touchdown that game. I haven't seen that kind of spark in him most of this season. I think if Kubiak works with Carr this season on that spark, Carr can be great for the Texans in '07. He's great at listening and following the coach's orders. If Carr's there next season and has a conservative approach again throughout next season, I really don't expect anything different from his individual results.
  22. Carr officially gets to keep his job. They should still try to get a veteran QB or QB in the 2nd round that's starter-quality just to give Carr a run for his money next year, but whatever the Texans do, DON'T draft a QB in the 1st round 2007. Beef up the OL or DL even more.
  23. It was painful to watch. Basketball aside, leg injuries ain't fun. I hope he fully recovers before he gets back on the court, and doesn't rush it.
  24. We better start winning consistantly again before the Nuggets figure out the plays for Iverson and Anthony in mid-January.
