  1. Do some homework. Mother had a candy factory next to Helms EL & & "He" lived in many locales in the Heights.
  2. A friend of mine hosted late Saturday night scary movies back when KRIV was KDOD-TV. Can't find any promos or opens for that show. Anyone know where to look?
  3. How long does it take to find out if the victim was a transient or resident? Seems like that's not too much to ask or report to calm the gentrified folks of the Heights.
  4. Houston has a tolerance feel about it although ethnic groups tend to live in clusters as opposed to full integration. Another thread mentioned the days Herman Short ran HPD during the 60s-70s. Had things not changed, this city would have a very different climate. Herman Short ran his department like the stereotypical Alabama state ... In 1970, when several policemen were accused of belonging to the Ku Klux Klan, Short told ... The Houston Police Department had only a handful of black patrolmen, and ... books.google.com/books?id=zCsEAAAAMBAJ
  5. It is because of Randy Ertman that families of the victims can eyewitness the execution of the condemned. Unheard of previously in the State of Texas, but now is standard practice. He is also the first person ever allowed to directly address the killers in the courtroom, after they were convicted, as I recall. I think this, too, has become a normal procedure in the courtroom. So sad how much good can come out of such tragedy. Thank God for people like Randy.
  6. Hope Waltrip HS has completed the memory garden in honor of the girls. Such a tragic story.
  7. Well? When anger dictates, facts are suppressed, injustice is on-going and no mediation in site, where are the solutions?
  8. The elderly man that lived in the house that once stood at the NE corner of Oxford and I-10 said that property was a stage coach stop. I haven't been able to find much on-line and hope a co-HAIFer might have resources. Anyone know where stops were in Houston?
  9. By Mayra Beltran/Houston Chronicle The Yale Street bridge, south of I-10 Year built: 1931 Owned by: Municipality This bridge is eligible for historical designation, but is functionally obsolete, meaning it does not meet modern design standards. The bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2016, transportation writer Dug Begley reports at HoustonChronicle.com. 1 of 22
  10. So what's the plan for their White Oak location? Mix use retail/residential anyone?
  11. I attended a private event held in the Astrodome Suites and never knew Roy's kinky side. There was the jungle room (complete with trees and ropes), a Roman bath that could accommodate a dozen guests as well as a room with a film projector behind a mirror. Can't remember all suites, but those are the one I remember most.
  12. Great perspective! Can't imagine how the lone homeowner can hold out and always wondered what the parameters of the electromagnetic field covers. Those are some mighty transformers.
  13. Just saw this and wondered if there are specs available. Love the building and have seen great shows there. Fans should follow www.rockefellerhall.com for details coming soon on the new space which will boast a rooftop bar, parking for more than 170 people, seating for 400+ and a fabulous outdoor patio and garden area with cuisine from a soon to be announced acclaimed Chef.
  14. Any updates on this project? HHA reported this last April...Marriott Hotel I-10 at Columbia – a variance was approved to allow entry to the property from Columbia for safety reasons.
  15. Several years ago the city's historic preservation office sifted through early deeds/tax records and came up with a list of all extant structures in Houston that were built prior to 1895 Can I access this info on-line? While my deed states my house was built in 1920, I've seen the micro files of phone directories that show names of residents listed in 1894. That was the last date available for directories at the time.
  16. As for the other side, a well maintained swimming area similar to the Bellaire Aquatic Center would be on my wish list.
  17. Plus there's a Beck's Prime at the clubhouse. Nice place for lunch.
  18. Check out this website to see more plans for the bayou http://www.buffalobayou.org
  19. I guess I should have called this post save Buffalo Bayou in Memorial Park. Many RO residents enjoyed the privacy the bayou offered behind their homes and the country club. A mutual agreement was reached so they have bowed out. Ironic since many are behind "Trees for Houston" and have donated a handsome sum to reforest the park. I think I'll enjoy the entertainment area of the bayou from Shepherd to 77002, but would equally enjoy the "wild" side of this small area of a natural habit between 610 and Shepherd. The map shows nearly all of the tree line along that stretch of the bayou will be removed. Seems like when Allison hit, the bayou along the park didn't suffer much of the flood's wrath but rather inundated downtown when it met up with White Oak Bayou. It's all about making money, but improving the bayou along Memorial Park to create more gritty bike trails, public launch areas for kayaking, bird trails, etc. for those of us that enjoy a natural environment as opposed to a profitable river walk knock-off is quite appealing to me.
  20. Well, I'm hoping for a lively discussion after that post. Guess I'm jaded living close to a bayou that was paved before I got here and now have to pay drainage fees for civil engineer's "solution" to flooding here.
  21. http://www.savebuffalobayou.org/ Any thoughts, especially among landscape architects?
  22. I enjoyed shopping at Kaplan's for gifts and unique items. Something along a similar type "department" store with more current merchandise would be great.
