  1. And our Navy employed this terrorist? Aaron Alexis, believed to be the lone gunman in the killing of 12 people at a Navy building in Washington Monday morning, was a Navy veteran from New York with a troubled past who was arrested in two previous incidents.
  2. Saw this alert posted on FB today and this story tonight. Lock your car doors before you walk away. http://www.khou.com/news/local/Oak-Forest-neighbors-believe-criminals-using-gadget-to-unlock-car-doors--223239331.html
  3. We need more police presence and more vigilant neighbors that actually are aware of who lives next to, across the street and behind them. We also need a communication strategy to keep residents informed. The availability of social media for the local neighborhood is virtually non-existent with the exception of a few general boards. I would gladly pay dues to the HHA if they had a neighborhood bulletin board with alerts. The constable program is an attempt but I truly believe "the feet on the ground" can be much more efficient in dettering hoodlum crime and vandalism as it occurs. I was very disappointed the elitists in WH forced the community to join an exclusive board available only to members in their subdivision mainly due to the immediate alert when our local community was under siege. It also served as a reminder to always be alert and all types of crimes were posted. We did not have to wait for the "if it bleeds it leads" stories to wake us from our gentrified slumber.
  4. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake shook portions of eastern Texas Monday afternoon. The earthquake occurred at 4.52 p.m. local time with an epicenter about 2 miles west-northwest of Timpson. The depth of the quake was 5.1 km or 3.1 miles down. Timpson is located in Shelby County about 25 miles northeast of Nacogdoches and 40 miles southeast of Kilgore. There have been no reports of damage at this time. This registers as one of the strongest earthquakes ever to hit the state of Texas. The strongest Texas earthquake was 5.8 near Valentine, Texas, in 1931.
  5. I with you Red....the irregular, small lot isn't suitable for anything else. I'm looking for property records and can't find anything on this lot. HCAD has no record of ownership. Any suggestions on where to search?
  6. Nope, the lot on Oxford. Just south of the trail. Ryland is building 5 or 6 homes north of the site. One block south of White Oak.
  7. Anyone have the scoop on what's being planned for the SE lot by the Oxford Street trail? I was under the impression it was owned by TXDot and can't find lot info on this site. The land has been cleared and a few survey markers are on the S side of the property.

  9. Soooo, will the building be imploded?
  10. Hope they save facades, etc. Knowing Houston, that's a SWAW ( silly wild ass wish).
  11. Keep us posted as they get closer to the demo! Witnessed the Compass Bank on Post Oak implosion and it was a blast (pun intended)! Can't imagine how they can take down a building between others. Anyone know how the building will come down?
  12. Another one bites the dust in the Heights! I loved that little gas station and hoped to see revived as a smoothie stand or Italian ice stand. So it goes.... http://houston.culturemap.com/news/realestate/07-02-13-another-historic-building-is-bulldozed-heights-landmark-disappears-over-the-weekend/
  13. That might be the site of this article I read awhile ago. The link doesn't work, but you can see the description. HIGH WATER DAYS - Houston Lifestyles & Homes magazine Harvard Market in the Heights became an island during the 1935 flood. houstonlifestyles.com/high-water-days-Houston-history Wondered if it flooded during Allison.
  14. Does anyone know where this market was located? Just curious of it's history.
  15. I see a "Houston siting" on The Big Bang Theory in our future! Sheldon come home!
  16. I've written "think before I write" 100 times....thanks for sharing the map. Wish they'd complete access UNDER Shepherd between 6th & 8th. Aside from the bayou, it's now a straight shot on 6th from Yale to Shepherd.
  17. Anyone know the plans for the work being done? There are retaining walls over the east side's concrete edge but nothing on the west side. A friend said the same is going on at the bayou under TC Jester.
  18. My original question was in concern for public safety and believe making the crossings extremely noticeable would benefit both cyclists and drivers. I still think switching stop sign streets where the path intersects would be a great start, after all, someone's suppose to stop either the N/S bound or E/W bound driver. Does it really matter which one it is? I've witnessed too many motorists on cell phones, etc.(Usually realtors or young drivers) paying little attention to other motorists let alone pedestrians & cyclists. Fluorescent paint, caution signs and/or lights can't hurt can it? If you think so say why. Keep in mind I never mentioned stop lights. I did throw out for way stops on intersections the pathway crosses and don't think it's a bad idea either.
  19. Oops...I obviously haven't used the quote option lately. In response to Pleak, that's a great example of what I mean. I was referring to the crosswalk north of Westheimer on Post Oak where there is NO caution light. There's several crosswalks there and I hardly ever see anyone slow down let alone stop.
  20. And great work by the neighbors who could provide info!
  21. In Tampa every trail has yellow lights and a pedestrian crosswalk at every street crossing. If you've lived here long you know Houston is not a very pedestrian friendly city. Case in point, have you ever seen a motorist yield to pedestrians crossing in the crosswalk on Post Oak in the Galleria?
  22. How difficult do you think it would be to get the city to make all intersections that the hike & bike trail crosses four way stops or at least switch the streets the sign are on right now? It seems to me that nearly every intersection that the trail crosses currently has a stop sign that allows autos to cross the path without stopping. How crazy is that?
