  1. me and some friends went to the soft opening last night, definitely a cool bar. the entire staff is tatted up. the games are excellent, especially mortal kombat. also a new retail clothing store next to Coffee Groundz opened up where comcast use to be. They split the comcast store into two different leases, one to the clothing store, and one is vacant. also, the apartments at bagby and mcgowen look great. excellent infill.
  2. God I love the advertising clutter back then. I still love downtown but back then looks even better... way better. We need advertising!
  3. well we dont have rail and most people complain about the bus system not being on time, probably a pretty solid investment in Houston
  4. this is interesting... if anyone finds any information about the zoning rule regarding bars and schools please post it.
  5. excellent, i live right at taft and gray and i think this should help property values. solid. When's construction suppose to start?
  6. On a positive note, i was driving down 59N, then exited 45N and took a cruise by downtown.... At least the "better" side of ES faces the highway which makes for better skyline shots. I'm not saying this is ideal but it is probably better that the back is facing the park rather than the highway.
  7. I was at Dean's Credit Clothing off Main Street on Saturday night and it was packed. It started off with a fashion show then followed by a badass live band. When i went out into the street around 1:15am, it seemed fairly crowded. Personally, I like the walkability and feel of downtown better than any other area of Houston.
  8. I got this e-mail today. 380 Agreement Details with developer Ainbinder about Koehler Street Development During the second town hall meeting regarding the Koehler Street Development, also referred to as the possible Wal-Mart project, I promised to provide the 380 agreement as soon as it was ready to be considered by Houston City Council. In accordance with my pledge to residents for transparency during this process, the agreement has been posted on the City's Koehler Street Development Webpage at http://www.houstontx.gov/koehler/koehler380.pdf. This agreement will be considered at the September 15, 2010, 9:00 a.m. meeting of Houston City Council. From the start, my goal has been to have the developer build with traffic, drainage, noise and crime concerns in mind. Your feedback through e-mails, phone calls and both town hall meetings played a big role in the negotiations. However, it is important to note that neither I nor City Council are able to tell the developer which stores may be leased on this or any property. We can only ask that they pay attention to specific issues raised by the community and address them adequately. For further comments or concerns, contact Cecilia Ortiz in the Mayor's Citizens Assistance Office at cecilia.ortiz@houstontx.gov or call 832.393.0955.Sincerely,Annise Parker
  9. Barcadia is moving to Houston, and it will be setting up behind Reef and in front of the new Camden in Midtown. Sounds like a pretty cool idea. Looks like they are expanding the sidewalks around where the bar is going too... Here is a link to the one they have in Dallas, http://www.barcadiadallas.com/
  10. http://www.houstontx.gov/pdf/KoehlerStreetDevelopment.pdf info about the 2nd public meeting
  11. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2010/02/08/story12.html this is dated but i haven't heard of this before... A hotel next to mainplace would be good news...
  12. yes, sweet bike! i just got a new one speed bike for cruising but i've been traveling so much i haven't had a chance to ride it... gonna hit the heights trail...
  13. I saw them spinning once, it was definitely very cool looking. I like this building a lot.
  14. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2010/08/heights_walmart_video.php i'm not sure this has been posted before but check out this ad i found.
  15. I thought I read somewhere that the new owners of Leon's Lounge were remodeling and it would be opening up again soon...
  16. I saw that Cafe Layal was opening up in Midtown next to Lemon Tree, off of Gray. They have a pretty cool location on Richmond although I'm not into smoking hookah, the food and atmosphere is pretty cool. I am pretty sure it's the same chain... http://www.cafelayalgrill.com/
  17. If you are right, i'll make sure to buy as much as possible from this store to see it survive... this would be really good news.
  18. i know what you mean. I like washington, it's a good place and hopefully will continue to be great. we have a lot of people in houston so we can have more than one hot spot. I'm banking on the trains bringing more life to midtown... it's going to be great when the additional 5 lines are done. I HOPE it will make midtown the closest most walkable extension of downtown. I think the seeds are there man. The shops off main street are a great start, i hope to see more!
  19. Man this is excellent news! I'll be sure to hit up all these places as soon as they open... Thanks for posting.
  20. brian, can you add some more comments about the retail planned near continental club and how else they plan to redo Bagby? I noticed that they made sidewalks more pedestrian friendly by creating wide open ramps along the street... are there other improvements on the way?
  21. I am a midtown resident and I use the train a lot. About 15 of my friends move to this area after college and we all use it. This definitely does not represent everyone though. I think people in Houston are too use to the confinement of their cars. This makes us quick to judge people, even scared of people, who use public transportation. Who cares if they don't look or act like you as long as it safe. I see cops at most of the major stops, and they give tickets to those who don't pay the fare. The train could have a better crowd I guess but how do you enforce that??? You can't. This is a big city and you're going to have people from all classes using a public transportation system. So if we want a better quality of life, shops businesses to open up around the train or places close to the train, we should venture out and use it. I can get from Midtown to Angelilca, Toyota Center, Reliant, Houston Pavilions, Market Square Park, the Museum District, and even Rice Village by a combination of walking and the train. If I want to cut down on time, I can use my bike. It's a different way to see the city and more enjoyable.
  22. haha whatever puts pedestrians on the streets!
