  1. I used to live there, so I know it has a mix of single family houses with yards, duplexes, fourplexes, townhouses, apartments & commercial. I'd categorize it as urban. Why won't you answer my question? Have you been to The Westbury?
  2. "Suburb" describes land use. It describes how people live. Where they live influences how they live, but it isn't the sole factor. How would you categorize the neighborhood shown in my pictures? Urban, suburban or exurban?
  3. Yes it was, and I believe Baybrook had one, too. They were great stores for cigars back before cigars were trendy.
  4. And I asked you what you would call the neighborhood containing those houses. What would you call it? Urban, suburban or exurban? And as I said before, city limits aren't a useful part of the definition if the city is as free to annex as Houston is. So what's your answer?
  5. There are no penalties for violations of the flag code, so while you're not supposed to display the US flag that way, there's absolutely nothing law enforcement can do about it.
  6. Yeah, I finally got a chance to shop there a while back. I found some amazing stuff, like a copy of a book my dad bought at the King Tut exhibit in New Orleans when I was a kid. And the dude working there was very helpful.
  7. Really? I've heard more than two positions on gay marriage, many of them on this forum. Here are a few: 1. For gay marriage, want to replace domestic partnerships and civil unions. 2. Against gay marriage, domestic partnerships & civil unions. 3. For domestic partnerships or civil unions but against gay marriage. 4. Against the federal government defining marriage, want to leave it to the states. 5. Against any government involvement in the definition of marriage, want it to be a religious issue like "baptized" or "excommunicated". Very few "issues" have only two sides. There may be many reasons to vote yes or no on a bill; is it fair to only give voice to one reason for each vote? Who determines which reason will be broadcast? The federal government? Elected officials? Appointed bureaucrats? Even on this issue (The Fairness Doctrine) we can find more than two sides.
  8. I wonder if it's an age thing. I've noticed that a lot of young people, especially young people who grew up in the far-flung suburbs, call anything inside the loop "downtown".
  9. But there isn't a "coin". Few real issues resolve to two opposing positions. How fair does "fair" have to be? Do we have to ensure time for 3 different opinions? Why not 4? Why not 40?
  10. I just grabbed these from har.com. Honestly, what would you call the neighborhood containing these houses? Urban, suburban or exurban?
  11. What's with the bowling hate? I know communists who love to bowl.
  12. I'm not especially impressed by the architecture, but I dig having a Turkish-American center down the road from me. (Here in the suburbs!)
  13. I really want to argue with Mr. City, but absolute agreement stands in my way. Welcome to The HAIF.
  14. I'm against it. It costs too much to enforce, relies on subjective decisions, and requires more government involvement in media. On top of all that, the "free" airwaves are rapidly losing their importance as more people get their information and opinion from the internet.
  15. What if you're the sort of person who doesn't think it's cool to hate, but still harshes on Disney?
  16. Same here. I went to the one in Katy Mills about 8 years ago, and just barely remember it now. The food was nothing special.
  17. I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be a thread about the new Turkish-American center on W. Bellfort, just inside the beltway. Apparently it opened on Dec. 2nd and Madeleine Albright cut the ribbon.
  18. Please do. I'm dying to see what your dream city would look like, with none of those ghastly railroad crossings, billboards or undistinguished "junky" buildings actually being used for business.
  19. This is the "blight" you folks find so upsetting? Damn. That's not blight, that's just America.
  20. Start some potholes. All you need are a few breaks in the road surface and rain will do the rest.
  21. That probably depends on the chick. It doesn't fit the stereotype.
  22. Us suburban "seedy types" are still reading these messages.
  23. But it is snobbery when you say "the best ______" is inside the loop and then admit you won't even try anything outside the loop.
  24. You know, us "seedy types" are reading these messages. Try to avoid personal attacks, OK?
